Abstract

In order to develop their academic quality, it is very important for UNS lecturers to improve English competency. It needs a conscientious management to reach the goal of having English competency effectively. Based on the result of the interview with the lecturers who attend English course, it was found that there were some obstacles in carrying out the English course. The data were collected by using questionnaire and interview. The result of this research showed that there were some obstacles dealing with developing lecturers’ English competency: (1) management factors, the time of English course activity often overlapped with lecturers other activities, consequently it caused only few participants attend the course; (2) the motivation of trainees factor, it showed that they had low need of achievement. It can be seen from some indicators: a) they did not spend time to learn the material outside the classroom; b) they did not study English at home; c) they attended the course without preparation. Therefore the researcher proposed several suggestions: (1) it is crucial to improve coordination to hold the course at the appropriate time; (2) it is necessary to motivate the trainees by giving rewards in connection with improvement in career or promotion/rank.

Abstract

Based on the experiences, many teachers do not feel very successful in teaching story problems. On the other hand, many students find that story problems are one of the most difficult challenges in mathematics and do not like them. However, there has been no official report on the matter, at least in Indonesia. The purpose of the research is to identify students errors in doing story problems on fractions, both decimal fractions and usual fractions. The research was conducted in Kota Surakarta, involving students in grade 6 for twelve elementary schools. Eight essay story problems on fractions were given to those students. Then, data about the students errors in doing story problems were collected by looking over the students work thoroughly. After analyzing the data, the research concluded that about half of the students did not answer story problems correctly. The data also revealed that story problems involving usual fractions were more difficult than story problems involving decimal fractions for the students. There was a trend that story problems which include complex calculation were more difficult than story problems which include simple calculation.

Abstract

The problem that rose in this research is the teaching ability of new teachers which is relatively low. It was shown from: (1) teachers had less ability to make teaching preparation; (2) teachers had less ability to perform the teaching procedure; (3) teachers had less ability to establish an interpersonal relation harmonically at classroom. This research is intended to solve the above problems. This research was applied on class 11.4 SMU Negeri I Surakarta. The research was a collaborative research which involved senior teachers of history subject matter and new teachers. Their active involvement in the research was enable them to broaden their roles by conducting self reflection critically toward what they did in the class; and based on that reflection, their performance was improved. In line with the characteristics of the classroom research, the problem above should be overcome by taking action in the form of directing new teachers. This is based on the observation result and the interview that the low ability to teaching not only comes from the teachers themselves, but also from the less effective supervision. The research result shows that after carrying out the actions, the teaching ability has increased significantly, in the turn it brings about a positive effect to the students learning activities.

Abstract

This research presents conversations between guides and tourists during guiding tours. The data were taken from a larger research on tasks in tour guiding, collected from observations of several tours. The conversations were discussed in terms of how the guide and the tourist developed the topics of the conversations. This paper also analyses problems in the conversations using the framework from Varonis and Gass (1985). They suggest that problems in communication can be identified by looking at the ‘trigger’ and the ‘indicator’ of problems in conversations. The analysis of the conversations indicated that the guide and the tourist in their conversations were actively engaged in the topic. They gave opinions, contributed to the conversations, and provided information to the topic. The analysis also indicated that there were four types of indicators of communication problems: (1) explicit questions, (2) clarification requests, (3) confirmation checks, and (4) rephrasing.

Abstract

Teachers and parents often complain about the negative affect of students on mathematics learning at schools, but there has been no official report on this matter. This study was intended to investigate the status of the affective aspect of the result of the schools mathematics education. The affects measured were attitude, interest, motivation, anxiety, self concept, extrinsic appreciation, intrinsic appreciation, operational appreciation, belief about mathematics, belief about self, belief about mathematics teaching, and belief about social context. The subjects were the first year students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences of the State University of Yogyakarta (UNY) comprising students of eight departments i.e. Department of: Biology, Biology Education, Chemistry, Chemistry Education, Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Physics, and Physics Education. The instrument was adapted from the affective test items developed by Wilson used in the National Longitudinal Study on Mathematics Achievement by the School Mathematics Study Group in the USA, and supplemented by test items on beliefs developed based on the McLeod’s classification. The data indicated that the affects were of either low level or neutral level (neither favorable nor unfavorable for mathematics lesson) except for the belief about mathematics, about mathematics teaching, and about social context of mathematics.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out: (1) the correlation between the achievement motivation and the work achievement of the UNS employees; (2) the autonomy of the UNS employees in their work; (3) the adaptation of UNS employees and their work achievement. The research used descriptive correlation method. The technique of collecting data was questionnaire. The data analysis was done by using descriptive statistics and correlation technique. The result of the research shows that there is no correlation between: (1) autonomy and working performance; (2) achievement motivation and working performance; (3) adaptation and working performance; (4) achievement motivation and autonomy; (5) achievement motivation and adaptation but there is correlation between adaptation and autonomy of the UNS employees.

Abstract

The main purpose of this research was to examine the effects of combination circuitplyometric training method and body weight on agility. The method used in this research was a field experiment using the 2x 2 (body weight x paining method) factorial designs. Eighty male students of Sport and Health Department of Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Sebelas Maret University taken by purposive stratified random sampling, were classified into four cells. The treatment was conducted three times a week during eight weeks. Body height and weight were measured with studio meter; agility with LSU Agility Obstacle Course, and the scores were recorded with photo gate meter. Tests were administered prior to and after the eight week training program. The data were analyzed with two way factorial ANOVA and Newman Keuls test. The result of ANOVA and Newman Keuls test from the combination circuitplyometric skip jump had significantly higher agility than combination circuitplyometric squad jump training method. There was better average of increase on normal minus body weight than normal plus. There was significantly interaction into two-way between combination circuitplyometric training method and body weight. The group with normal minus body weight that was trained by combination circuitplyometric skip jump showed significantly better result than other groups.

Abstract

This research is about the study on the effectiveness of inquiry strategy upon students achievement in history subject, dealing with cognitive, affective and creative thinking domains, with student’s entry behavior, interest in the subject, family background and students achievement in religion and Pancasila Education as covariates. The inferential analysis such as t-test and anacova were used to test the hypothesis. The result of the testing of the hypothesis revealed that at the level of significance a = 0,01, the main hypothesis was accepted. The contribution of students entry behavior was 10,10 %. The study concluded that there was a significant different in students achievement using inquiry strategy in the instructional materials and the classical method of teaching. This means that inquiry strategy in the instructional materials was more effective than classical learning.
