Abstract

Since the institutional repositories was introduced, and its advantages in increasing the institution performances has been recognized, many universities in Indonesia has been developing the repositories system for preserving and disseminating their intellectual outputs. However, despite of its development, the existing of repository system is less used. It is alleged that lecturers are not aware and reluctant due to their task complexity. In addition, user expectancy should be observed in relation with the use of institutional repositories. The purpose of this paper is to examine a limited sample data on the relationship between user expectancy and the use of institutional repositories in higher education institutions in Indonesia. A pilot study is conducted with 50 university lecturers at Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. This study investigates as well as predicts the relationship between users’ expectancies and the use of institutional repositories. Structural analysis is employed by using PLS-SEM (Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling) approach. SmartPLs 2.0 software is used in the analysis. The results indicated that user expectancy has a significant relationship with the use of institutional repositories by its contribution up to 57.8 %

Abstract

The speed and efficiency to obtain information is highly valued by information seekers. Students learn well when the desired information can be found, evaluated and used. using the descriptive quantitative approach on two variables bibliographic analysis and information literacy skills , this study aims to gain an overview of the extent to which students S1 UIN Jakarta FAH using scientific resources in completing college assignments; to analyze barriers experienced in accessing and using sources scientific information , and to determine the appropriate information literacy strategies to be implemented . The results of the study on bibliographic analysis shows that the students use more books than any other resources, more printed materials in Indonesian language, and more resources under two years between 2000 and betwen 2006 to 2010. While the information literacy skills , students scored 49.7 % . Strategies undertaken to refer to Blooms Taxonomy. This study concludes that the students’ information literacy skills need to be built and improved regularly using different strategies of information literacy programs.

Abstract

This study is aimed at explaining the level of religious role of library amongst users of Syuhada mosque library that is located in Kota Baru Yogyakarta. The study uses the concept of Glock and Stark in defining the religiosity based on five dimensions, such as ideology and experience. In addition, other concepts related to the role of libraries that it can become in the forms of frequency of visits, type and subject of collections read, and the theme of religious subjects used. While the research uses a descriptive quantitative approach equipped with data collection techniques, such as questionnaire, interview, and observation. Its data analysis uses a method of percentage of a four-point Likert scale. The results are found that the religious role of library amongst Syuhada mosque library users achieves a high category, which is amounted to 76.80%. The number is an average of five indicators. The highest level is occupied by correlative links of the library effects to the level of religiosity of Syuhada mosque library users with a value of 85.60%. Conversely, the lowest one is located by the indicator of types of collection read by 70.75%. Based on the findings, the important recommendation that can be proposed is that the mosque library should be encouraged and developed because it obviously shows its correlative effects to the religious life of society.

Abstract

Community of Practice (CoP) is one of the communities (research groups) from various disciplines and have an interest in a particular subject. The existence of this CoP is not always permanent. The amount was not observed. Communities can be dispersed when the research is complete, and may be flocking back when they have other interests are the same. CoP presence is not always planned, but its activities must be well planned. According to Weber, a person becomes a member of CoP when she played a man practicing something (practitioners) and interact with fellow members to exchange experiences, learn to solve practical problems, and exchange information. The communication system is similar to the CoP members of the scientific comunication. CoP always associated with learning activities together (collective learning), where the library has an important role. Library as a learning resource provider become an important asset for the CoP. According Pendit (2003) in the context of shared learning, CoP theory to develop a view on access to learning resources and the right to participate in activities of a CoP. Learning resource librarian is what makes it is possible to collaborate with the CoP. Librarians can engage in activities CoP with a role as a facilitator, mediator, and subject specialist, without being a member of the CoP. The existence of a CoP, peripherals process each member is an interesting and unique process. The whole process can be monitored and recorded by the librarian becomes tacit knowledge institution.

Abstract

This article discusses information literacy curriculum (IL) in college. The concept of information literacy translated from researchers IL among others from the American Library Association, ACRL, CILIP, and SCONUL. IL standard model widely adopted by universities around the world, the Seven pillars of information literacy and Information literacy competency standards for higher education. Information literacy framework is a grand strategy for the implementation of the IL program at a university, institution or country. Libraries need to organize IL workshops and training IL that is both classical and also develop material IL that can be accessed online. To develop an IL model / standard appropriate to the Indonesian context, we can start from scratch or adopt the mode /standard that already exists.

Abstract

This study examines the policy of verbal subject cataloging and its implementation in the college library. The main question of this study is how the verbal subject cataloging policy and its implementation in the process of cataloging activities in the college library. The data are taken from two college library which is considered to be fairly well established located around Jakarta. The methodology of this research is descriptive use a qualitative approach. The research reveals that the two libraries have already have policy on subject cataloging although it is still in a draft and still in the process of refinement. Both libraries have established guidelines for verbal subject cataloging which must be used consistently, but in its implementation there are many factors that affected the quality of the output of subject cataloging activities, including personal factors cataloger, the workload, the language of the library materials. It is recommended that the library to prepare a written policy adequately and maintain the consistency of the cataloging process and its output quality.

Abstract

The existence of Google as a popular search engines has significant effect on the view of some people about the function of library. They assume that a library function has been shifted by the presence of google. This paper tries to discuss that google versatile presence does not automatically rule out the function of a library as a service provider with accurate information. The library has several advantages that are not owned by google. First, all the collections usually pass through a rigorous selection process by the selection team. This is different to google which is procuring information through a machine called spiders or web crawlers. Secondly, with the number of hybrid library, with Google itself has become a part of the hybrid library tool itself. Third, the library will also provide a more humane service to the existence of a librarian. Professional librarians capable of providing relevant and accurate information to the information seekers.

Abstract

As a unit or institution, the library can provide a meaningful contribution in building the intellectual community because that role can not be separated as a means of support for formal and informal education. Although todays decision-makers are beginning to pay attention to the problem of a library with many regulations set associated with the library. But unfortunately in practice some of the existing regulations through many dilemmas that consequently the role of school libraries in Indonesia is still facing various problems. This paper is as a review of some regulations libraries in reality on the ground causes a lot of dilemmas and matters that may lead to something that is not conducive to the development of libraries in the future, especially with regard to the librarian profession for graduates or bachelor of library science and information to make a career as the head of the school library. Because some library regulations made reality more favorable to the professional educators or teachers to fill the position of head of the library.

Abstract

As institutional repositories are part of library materials, it is important to organize these materials properly. An effective organization of library materials is if these materials can be retrieved easily and quickly. This study is aimed to investigate the technical problems regarding with organization of institutional repositories materials such as determining heading, subject access, data accuracy, and other technical problems. By using content analysis, some errors in organizing repositories materials are identified, and then classified into categories. Based on the study, it was found that there are some errors in determining headings, keywords, typeing errors, uploading files, and data entry.
