THE GROWTH RESPONSE CAUSED BY ARBUSCULAR MYCORRHIZAL FUNGI ON CORN WITH MEDIA POLLUTED BY HEAVY METAL Cd, Pb and Zn

Abstract

This study is aimed to know the most optimal arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi mikoriza dosage for corn to control the absorption of Cd, Pb, Zn, and to know the impact of heavy metal Cd, Pb and Zn treatment toward the growth and harvest of corn. This research was a factorial experiment arranged on randomized  block design (RBD)  and each treatment was conducted three times in which each treatment had two factors: the dosage factor of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi  (D), consisting of D0 = without arbuscular mycorrhizal fungia, D1=100 g/poly bag, D2=200 g/poly bag; the factor of heavy metal (L), consisting of L1=Cd, L2=Pb, L3=Zn. There were some observed variables: the weight of corn ear  per plant (gr), the dry weight of plant root (gr), the dry weight of upper part of the plant (gr), the number of corn ears, the growth response caused arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (TPAM). Based on the result and analysis, it could be concluded that providing 200 gr mikoriza per plant showed an effective inokulan with TPAM 25,971%. Moreover, the result gained from the criterion of the ability to improve plant growth signed by the indicator of kation absorption of heavy metal showed that the characteristics of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi used in the experiment were able to support the improvement of adaptation level of plants toward biotic and abiotic condition. As result, it is recommended to conduct field tests on the land polluted by heavy metals for each species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. This is to find out the potentials of each arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi species used as bio-accumulator of heavy metals so that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi  would be employed to improve the bio-remedial for polluted land.
