Rheumatic diseases are a group of diseases with diverse etiology, characterised by pain in joints and musculo skeletal system, sometimes accompaned by swelling and stiffness resulting in difficulty of movements. Although seldom causing death, rheumatic diseases are an important public health problem as it causes disability with medical, psychological, economic and social impact The disease is knowm in the community as "encok", "pegel", "linu", "kemeng", "ngihi" (Javanese) or "cangkeul" (Sundanese). An epidemiological survey in Central Java in 1984 found a frequency of rheumatism among the adult population of 27% in ntral Bandungan and 24.8% in the city of Semarang. The complaints of rheumatism increases with age and the most frequent sites were the back and knees. Difficulties in carrying daily tasks were experienced by 11-14.4% of the women and 12.4 -22.1% of the men. Laboratory and X-ray examination of 75 patients gave the following results : 62 osteoarthritis, 9 rheumatioid arthritis, 3 gout and 1 ankylosing spondylitis.
