Co-authorship Pattern in Research on Energy Sector: Social Network Analysis

Abstract

A nation capacity to provide clean and affordable energy is crucial for the development of its economy. Indonesia energy mix still rely heavily on fossil fuels, but a concerted effort to explore a more sustainable energy has been laid out by the government, including promoting studies and providing incentives for research in the area of sustainable energy. This paper tries to examine the trend of energy research in Indonesia, the theme of research in the field of energy and to find out which institution has conducted a rigorous research and actively producing publications in this field. The study uses data of international research publications from World of Science (WOS) during 1997-2014. Data Analysis using Social Network Analysis (SNA) with UCINET, NetDraw, and VOSViewer software. The result shows that the number of international publications on energy in Indonesia are increasing and most publications are of research collaboration with institutions from other country. Based on keywords that frequently appear which are biomass, biodiesel, and ethanol, it can be concluded that popular research theme on energy in Indonesia is renewable energy. This paper concludes with the findings on institutions with the highest rank in renewable energy publications, those are Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Institut Pertanian Bandung (IPB), and Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia/Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI). Research collaborations with institutions from around the globe will improve the performance of research and development bodies in Indonesia, which will only benefit the economy in the long run.

Abstract

Indonesian scholars have published a numbers of articles in numerous international publications, however, it still lags behind other Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam. This article performs a bibliometrics analysis and examine the collaboration network in Mathematics and Statistics related subject of scholars with Indonesian affiliation as recorded in Web of Science. In total, based on article publications during 2009-2017, 426 articles were retrieved. Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) was the affiliation with the highest number of articles (48%) and number of authors (27%). Using Social Network Analysis to examine co-authorship networks, this research shows that the co-author network has the highest centrality in the ITB affiliation. Meanwhile, dependency of foreign affiliation is still high, shown as a high percentage (84% of all articles) of international co-authorship. Co-authorship network of Mathematics and Statistics related studies in Indonesia possesses as a scale-free network and followed the power law distribution. This research showed the achievement of Indonesian scholars of Mathematics and Statistics, and can be used to evaluate the knowledge transfer in these subjects and related areas.

Abstract

A content analysis on Indonesian biomedical research publication is conducted based on text mining. The research is necessary to obtain a rich contextual overview of the development of biomedicine research in Indonesia for example in the context of the downstreaming potential of research publications. The results of text data processing using a computational model and bibliometric analysis will provide a richer contextual picture as a proxy to reveal the potential for downstreaming of basic research. Quantitative research is conducted using data sources from Scopus, Google Scholar and universities’s and scientific journal’s repository to analyse the performance at the meso and macro level. Interpretation of the results is qualitatively carried out within a FGD session with domain experts. An attempt is carried out to see the trajectory of series of research publications from basic research stage down to clinical trials. This effort results in an ability to show the research trajectory in anti-malaria drug development from the basic research which evolves to the clinical trial. This study reveals many discontinuities in the trajectory a research topic from basic research to downstreaming in drugs development in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper attempt to elucidate the postulation that there is a continuous trajectory from the network interaction in scientific research towards the systemic transformation in innovation capacity building. This study will expose that the availability of research capacity in certain areas can be developed into innovation capacity through R&D consortia, where building research capacity is a long term process of scientific accumulation. This study utilizes two techniques scientometrics and case study in stem cell and vaccine research in understanding innovation capacity.The research capacity in the area of vaccines has been long started from individual research conducted by researcher. It has been continued into organization research, and then developed into building innovation capacity through R&D consortia. However, in areas of stem cell there is still lack of evidence but it directly leaps to build innovation capacity through R&D consortia. Therefore further empirical evidence is needed to support the continuous trajectory.
