Abstract

This research aims at revealing the form of resistance and survival strategies and form of the negotiation of an individual facing the identity issues as the impact of Islamic revolution in Iran and the war crisis as reflected in the french graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. The theory of identity and agency by Giddens are used in this research to reveal the influential agents in the construction of individuals’ identity and how he acts. The results of this research are (1) Persepolis as a graphic novel expresses critical views against changes in Iranian society and has a correlation with the history of Iranian revolution and the war of Iran-Iraq, (2) Persepolis represents the forms of resistance and survival strategies of Iranian society during the revolution and the war. Identity in those days was a symbol of resistance by an individual who has been dominated by tradition, religion, radical change in the society, western values and the regime, (3) the representation of individuals’ identity who brings the eastern culture will negotiate with the western culture as an encountered foreign culture. Identity will always be on process and will change when it’s related to social and cultural context. Individual negotiation, regarding to this research, relates with the memory: ‘to forget’ to start a new life but also ‘to remember’ its historical context.
