Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to investigate whether Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) was effective to increase students’ writing ability in the context of teaching writing for the  second year  students  at  SMAN 1 Sungai Pakning. The research was carried out for three months. Students were selected by using cluster sampling. Dealing with the research instrument of collecting the data, some steps were made by using the action research of single cycle; plan, act, observe and reflect. Firstly, to identify the students’ ability in writing narrative text by using PAL, the written test was used consisting of pretest, treatment and posttest. Secondly, observation sheet was prepared which was used to observe directly the students in writing and the influence of PAL (independent variable) toward the students’ ability in writing narrative text (dependent variable). In this case, students who got poor score in pre-test became the writer and students who were good would be the helper. The average score of pretest was 58.21 and the post-test was 78.7. The difference was 20.49. The score of Standard Deviation was 6.84 and the match of t-test was 17.36. The progress of this research showed that the students’ ability improved by using PAL for 20.49 or 60.27%.Keywords: Peer Assisted Learning, Writing, and Narrative.

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to find out students’ writing motivation in hortatory exposition by using POW plus TREE strategy. The research was carried out at the eleventh grade students at SMAN 1 Bukit Batu This research was quantitative research. The population in this study was 26 students who were taken randomly.  A set of questionnaire was distributed to 26 students regarding their motivation on writing hortatory exposition by using POW plus TREE strategy. In this research, measurement of these statements using 30 statements in questionnaire based on indicators to assess students’ motivation in writing hortatory exposition. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS 22 to know the normality, validity, and reliability of the instrument. The researcher measured the total score from the result of the students’ motivation in writing ability test. The results of this study showed that students had goodmotivation in writing hortatory exposition by using POW plus TREE strategy. Keywords: Motivation, writing, hortatory exposition, POW plus TREE.

Abstract

Abstract : Vocabulary is one of important elements to be mastered In learning a foreign language. However, in real condition, the students sometimes feel bored and less interested to learn vocabulary. The aimed of this study was to make a Crossword Puzzle Book to help students to learn English vocabulary. It was designed to help students to be more interested in learning vocabulary. There were several processes in making the book, started from collecting the material, designing and printing the book. The application used was Photoshop and Microsoft Office Excel. The source materials of the book were taken from several sources. They were English text book, dictionary and Internet. The arrangement of the content is thematic. Interesting topics were chosen and several images were added. Besides, there are 4 question types: Synonym, Antonym, Question based on image, and Description. This book provides students a review course material, so that, it is expected to help students in learning vocabulary and remember it easily.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to investigate crews’ perceptions of Maritime English Usage at RORO Bengkalis. This research was quantitative and qualitative research. The population in this study was crews at Roro Bengkalis. A set of questionnaire was distributed to 28 crews regarding their perceptions on oral communication usage during their voyage and a face to face interview was carried out to 6 crews. In this research, measurement of these statements using the Likert scale ranging from 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Undecided, 4 = Agree and 5 = Strongly Agree. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS 22 to know the normality, validity, and reliability of the instrument. The results of this study showed that crews had positive perceptions on English for Maritime usage during their voyage

Abstract

Dalam menghadapi pasar Internasional di era globalisasi, Bahasa Inggris merupakan hal yang utama dalam berkomunikasi dan bersaing baik dalam dunia pendidikan atau pekerjaan. Masyarakat dari semua kalangan diharapkan bisa dan mampu untuk memahami Bahasa Inggris baik secara aktif maupun pasif. Ada beberapa factor penyebab rendahnya kemampuan Bahasa Inggris sebagian besar warga di Kecamatan Bengkalis, kabupaten Bengkalis, Provinsi Riau antara lain kurangnya motivasi, kurang menariknya model pengajaran, tenaga pengajar yang tidak sesuai bidangnya atau ketiadaan biaya untuk mengikuti kursus. Oleh sebab itu, kepedulian, keterlibatan dan sinergi antara akademisi dan organisasi masyarakat sangat diperlukan. English Clinic yang mana kursus ini akan memberikan kontribusi tidak hanya kepada pelajar dan mahasiswa tapi juga kepada semua kalangan dan tingkatan yang memiliki masalah dalam Bahasa Inggris secara gratis. English Clinic merupakan sebuah tempat yang berfungsi seperti sebuah klinik untuk membantu orang-orang yang memiliki masalah Bahasa Inggris. Dalam hal ini para akademisi tidak membatasi usia dan tingkatan pendidikan tetapi semua kalangan yang membutuhkan problem solver bisa mengunjungi klinik ini. English Clinic ini akan dilaksanakan di Desa Senggoro. Metode yang akan digunakan bersifat variatif karena akan disesuaikan dengan permasalahan yang dimiliki oleh setiap pelajar, mahasiswa atau orang awam yang ada di Desa Senggoro dengan harapan English Clinic ini akan sangat membantu tidak hanya di kalangan yang mampu tapi sangat diutamakan bagi yang kurang mampu.
