Abstract

Background: Variety of staple foods has an important role in supporting food security of the community. However, more people who used to consume non rice turn to consume rice nowadays. Sago (sinonggi) as one of staple foods is consumed less every year in Sulawesi Tenggara. This may be due to some factors, among others are preferences of the community to sago, perception of the community about social value of sago and sago availability. Objective: To identify the consumption of sago of the family in relation to preferences and perception of the family about social value of sago, availability of sago in the family level and its distribution.Method: The study was observational with cross sectional design. Research location was determined using cluster stratified random sampling technique. Three sub districts represented category of far, medium, and close from district capital. Two villages represented category of close and far from sub district capital. Distribution of 196 households samples were taken with proportionate sampling technique in 6 chosen villages. Variables of the study consisted of preferences to sago, perception about social value of sago, sago consumption and availability of sago in the household. Data were obtained through structured interview using questionnaire and observation. Bivariable analysis used chi-square; whereas multivariable used logistic regression. Results: Sago as complementary food of rice was consumed everyday by 65% of households. Preference level of sago was like (70.4%) and favorite (29.6%). Household perceived social value of sago as low (74.0%) and not low (26.0%). Sago was always available throughout the years at distribution level. Conclusions: There were differences in the consumption of sago based on the family preferences of sago, the family perception of sago social values, and the household availability of sago. Sago availability in the household was the most dominant factor of sago consumption in the household.

Abstract

Background: Children in school-age are categorized as sensitive group who are in the second fast growth so that adequate nutrition intake is needed. Under-nourished students tend to have low immune and susceptible to illness. Nutrition with infections disease has reciprocal relation, well-nourished will increase body immunity to infections disease and on the other hand, infection disease may worsen nutritional status condition. The relation between lack of micro-nutrient and the decreasing of body immune to ARI need to be solved; one way to solve such problem is by giving supplementation. Objective: The study was meant to know the influence of iron-folate, vitamin A and zinc supplementation to the duration and frequency of ARI among under-nourished elementary students grade IV – VI in Bantul regency.Method: This was experimental with factorial design. Subjects were divided into four treatment groups: iron-folate supple-mentation group were 38 students, iron-folate and vitamin A supplementation group were 39 students, iron-folate and zinc supplementation group were 40 students, and iron-folate, vitamin A and zinc supplementation group were 37 students. Data collected with recall twice a week during 3 months supplementation.Result: Supplementation did not influence frequency of ARI among 113 elementary students with ARI (p=0.72) among four supplementation groups, while the duration of ARI were: iron-folate, vitamin A, zinc 6.5 days, iron-folate, vitamin A 7.7 days, iron-folate, zinc 8.6 days and iron-folate only 11.2 days. In the average, the duration of ARI from every ARI symptom was the duration of cough, the longest cold was in iron-folate group, while cough symptom, the shortest cold was in iron-folate, zinc and vitamin A group. Conclusion: There were influence differences between iron-folate supplementation with Vitamin A and/or zinc and iron-folate supplementation to ISPA duration, but it did not give smaller influence statistically among frequency of ARI. Students with iron-folate, zinc and vitamin A supplementation had the shortest duration of ARI while students with iron-folate supplementation had the longest duration of ARI.

Social economic status of a family may affect intake of nutrient, energy, and protein which can bring impact on nutritional status. Good nutritional status is necessary for teenagers to maintain health and support physical activities. Senior high school students from poor and non poor families may have different nutritional status, physical activities, and academic achievement. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to identify differences in nutritional status, physical activities, and academic achievement of students from poor and non poor families at Bitung Municipality and relationship between intake of energy and protein and nutritional status, physical activities, and academic achievement of students from poor and non poor families. Methods: The study was observational with cross sectional design. Population and samples were senior high school students of 16–18 years old (from database) from poor and non poor families. Total samples were 314 students taken using stratified random sampling technique. The study was conducted in September–December 2005. Data were analyzed using chi-square, t-test, and linear regression with significance level 95% and processed using computer software. Results: There was a significant difference in nutritional status, light physical activity, academic achievement in poor and non poor highschool students (p<0,05), but there was no significant difference in the medium and heavy physical activity (p>0,05). There was also a relationship between confounding variable of energy intake with nutritional status, father’s job with light activity, father’s education and job with medium activity, father and mother’s education, father’s job, and energy intake with academic achievement. There was no relationship between confounding variable with heavy physical activity (p>0,05).Conclusion: There was differences in nutritional status in light physical activity and academic achievement between students from poor and those from non poor families.
