Abstract

Background: Anemia among pregnant women may increase abortion, premature, low birth weight and even mortality before and after delivery. Factors causing anemia in Indonesia are lack of Fe, inadequate intake, demanding needs, and lack of nutrient facilitating Fe absorption. Besides, infection such as worm and malaria may cause anemia as well. Result of household health survey 2001 stated that prevalence of pregnant women with anemia was 40% in Indonesia. In Jambi Province, it was 39% in 2003 and 42.3% for Batang Hari Regency while infection of malaria was 50.0% in all age groups and many other districts that its environment were woods, humid, and wasted that may increase infection of hookworm. Objective: The study was proposed to know the correlation of hookworm, malaria with anemia among pregnant women by analyzing correlation of hookworm, malaria, and anemia and correlation of hookworm, malaria and Fe status among pregnant women.Method: This was cross sectional study. It held from September until December 2005 in Batang Hari Regency, Jambi Province. Subjects were 132 pregnant women. Examination of blood for Hb, malaria and ferritin were taken together while feces were later. Results: There were no significant correlation of Ascaris lumbricoides infection with anemia (p = 0.36; OR = 2.43), Trichiuris thrichiura infection with anemia (p = 0.30), 2 kinds of worm Ascaris lumbricoides + Trichiuris trichiura with anemia (p = 0.08; OR = 4.87), and infection of Ascaris lumbricoides + Necator americanus with anemia (p = 0.30). There was significant correlation of 3 kinds of worm Ascaris lumbricoides + Trichiuris trichiura + Necator americanus with anemia (p = 0.018; OR = 7.3). There were no significant correlation of Ascaris lumbricoides with ferritin (p = 0.17; OR = 3.23) and Trichiuris trichiura with ferritin (p = 0.25). There was significant correlation of 2 kinds of worm Ascaris lumbricoides + Trichiuris trichiura with ferritin (p = 0.04; OR = 6.4). There was no significant correlation of Ascaris lumbricoides + Necator americanus with ferritin p = 0.25. There were significant correlation of 3 kinds of worm (Ascaris lumbricoides + Trichiuris trichiura + Necator americanus) with ferritin p = 0.007; OR = 9.69 and ferritin with anemia p = 0.0001; OR = 17.45.Conclusion: There was no significant correlation of hookworms Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichiuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides + Trichius trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides + Necator americanus with anemia. There were significant correlation of infection of Ascaris lumbricoides + Trichiuris trichiura + Necator americanus with anemia and malaria with anemia. There was no correlation of hookworms Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichiuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides + Neca- tor americanus with anemia. There were correlation of infection Ascaris lumbricoides + Trichiuris trichiura and Ascaris lumbricoides + Trichiuris trichiuris + Necator americanus with ferritin, malaria with ferritin, and ferritin with anemia.

Abstract

Background: Iron deficiency anemia contributed to a number of 50% in anemia and caused mortality of 841,000 every year in the world. Nutrition education before iron supplementation is needed because of low compliance in pregnant women. Gatak Sub District that is located in Sukoharjo Regency had the highest risk in pregnant women by 20.02%.Objective: This research aimed to know the effect of nutrition education in an effort to increase compliance of  iron consumption through prenatal classes in Gatak Sub district Sukoharjo Regency.Method: The method of this research was quasi experiment with pre test-post test with non equivalent control group design. The samples of this research were 70 pregnant women who fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria. A number of 33 pregnant women were in treatment group and 37 pregnant women were in control group. Treatment group received a nutrition education through anemia booklet and iron supplementation which contained 60 mg sulfas ferosus and 400 µg folic acid on a daily basis in prenatal classes for 3 months. Control group did not receive a nutrition education, but still received a daily iron supplementation for 3 months. Independent t-test and paired t-test were used to analyze data. Results: The knowledge level (higher 12.59), compliance of iron consumption (15.16%), food intakes including energy (higher 9.24%), protein (higher 10.98%), and Fe (higher 6.68%), although those food intakes were still below the RDA, and hemoglobin level (higher 0.44 g/dl), in treatment group compared with control (p<0.05). The factors of age, education level, household expenditure, parity, ANC, nutritional status, and last birth spacing did not affect the compliance of iron consumption (p>0.05).Conclusion: The nutrition education affected the increase in compliance of iron consumption through prenatal classes in Gatak Sub District Sukoharjo Regency.

Abstract

Background: Picky eater is potentially at risk for nutritional deficits. In a long term, this habit could affect child’s growth and could lead to malnutritionObjective: This study was conducted to assess the association of maternal food variation, infant feeding practices, and pressure to eat with picky eating behaviors in 2-3 years old children.Method: In this cross-sectional study, mothers (n=141) of children aged 2-3 years old were recruited from 26 integrated health care centers in Gamping, Indonesia between Juni-September 2015 using a cluster random sampling method. Picky eater was calculated using Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ). Maternal food variation and early age feeding variability data were measured using food variation questionnaire. Data on the pressure to eat were obtained based on subscale pressure to eat in Child Feeding Questionnaire (CFQ). Mann-Whitney test was used to evaluate the association between maternal food variation, infant feeding practices, and pressure to eat with picky eating behavior. Results: Picky eater was significantly associated with mother pressure to eat (p<0,05). There were tendencies of shorter exclusive breastfeeding practice, later in the introduction of solid food, and fewer variability of food at an early age on picky eater, however, there was no significant association (p>0,05).Conclusion: Mother has a major role in forming children eating behavior. Not pressing children to eat, will protect children from picky eating.

Abstract

Background: Employees’ productivity is closely related with nutritional condition. Nutritional condition can be physically assessed by determining nutrition status. One’s nutrition status is directly influenced by nutrient intake. However, health and nutrition status of an employee in general have not got proper attention that lead to decreasing productivity. Productivity is not only influenced by nutrition status but also by psychological factor that involves motivation. Objectives: To identify association between nutrient intake, nutrition status and motivation and productivity of female workers at production department of Bakpia Pathuk 25 Factory Yogyakarta.Method: The study was a survey that used cross sectional design. Subject of the study were female workers at production department as many as 40 people taken through proportional stratified random sampling technique. Data of subject assessed were nutrient intake (energy, carbohydrate, fat, protein, and Fe), nutrition status, motivation, and productivity. Nutrient intake was assessed using food recall 24 hours within 4 days, nutrition status was specified using anthropometric approach using body mass index (weight/height), motivation was assessed through motivation questionnaire and productivity through quantity of production (raw bakpia) produced by the worker at a time observation (44 minutes for workers at crust production and 1 hour for workers at filing department) within 3 times observation.Result: The result of linear regression analysis showed that association between nutrient intake (energy, carbohydrate, fat, protein and Fe), nutrition status and productivity was r<0.25 and p>0.05 whereas between motivation and productivity was r=0.901; R2= 0.812; and p=0.000 for variables of wages, intake of energy, Fe and motivation and productivity. Conclusion: There was no significant association between nutrient intake (energy, carbohydrate, fat, protein and Fe) and nutrition status and productivity; there was signifiant association between motivation and productivity. Concurrently only motivation had significant association with productivity.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding until the age of 4 months is low. One of the many factors associated with it is healthcare supports on breastfeeding. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of healthcare supports for breastfeeding on the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding until the age 4 months. Methods: This was a cohort study including 99 infants born at 10 birth clinics in Pekanbaru City during August-December 2003. Exposure was whether mother received supports for breastfeeding. Infants were followed monthly for 4 months to assess the duration they received exclusive breastfeeding. Results: Healthcare supports for breastfeeding were significantly associated with the duration of exclusive breastfeeding, i.e. RR (95%CI): 1.66 (1.08-2.54). Variables associated with longer duration of exclusive breastfeeding were availability of rooming in and early lactation. Early formula feeding did not support exclusive breastfeeding. Other variables associated with exclusive breastfeeding were husbands’ and other family members’ supports, maternal opinion on exclusive breastfeeding and maternal occupation. Conclusion: Healthcare supports on breastfeeding were important for promoting exclusive breastfeeding.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of anemia is one of indicators applied to determine pregnant woman nutrition status. The coverage of iron supplementation is still low due to poor iron distribution. In Aceh Besar regency, the prevalence of anemia in 2003 was 18.71% and become 45.5% in 2005 (report of Rapid Nutrition Assessment in Tsunami Affected Districts in NAD, February-March 2005).Objective: The study was meant to explore the distribution system and iron supplementation coverage post tsunami in Aceh Besar regency, NAD Province.Method: This was a qualitative naturalistic study; the design was investigative exploration study, and the data was collected by indepth interview. The analysis unit was health department, primary health care and villages in Aceh Besar regency. Subjects were stakeholders and pregnant women taken by purposive sampling and showed descriptively.Result: Poor health service and unreadiness of health staff affected the stagnation of iron distribution program. The un-available of guidance book and lack of nutrition staff and midwife development become so crucial. Indeed, they could not understand their jobs description in expanding iron distribution network. Furthermore, the distribution of iron tablet was done passively of pregnant woman visiting health service place. The policy of iron distribution by health department of Aceh Besar regency post tsunami 2004 were collecting data and pregnant woman ANC service held by mid-wife using iron program. The achievement of iron supple-mentation coverage was still low, though the attitude of pregnant woman has changed. Conclusion: The stagnation of basic health service and lack of health staff empowerment affected poor iron distribution for pregnant woman.
