The research aims to know the effects of chewing the fruit of cucumbers and tomatoes to the pH of the saliva. This research is a study of Pre-experiments with One Group Pretest – Posttest Design. Research done on April 2014. Location of research in junior high Country 2 Turi. Population research is grade VII Junior High School Country 2 Turi criteria 12-14 years of age, in good health, there are no dental caries reaches the pulpa, and there are no teeth missing. Influence of variable that is chewing on cucumber fruit and tomato fruit Chews, variable affected the pH of saliva. Processing and analysis of test data using the Paired Sample T-Test. The average pH of saliva before chewing on cucumber fruit is 6.7700 and after chewing on cucumber fruit is 6.8567 0.0867 rises. The average pH of saliva before chewing fruit tomato is 6.7833 and after chewing the fruit of tomato was 7.0067 0.2234 rises. After the analysis is performed using a test for paired sample t-test revealed the influence of meaning between before and after chewing the fruit of cucumbers, p=0.001, and there is a meaningful influence between before and after chewing fruit tomato p=0.000.

Abstract

Background: With an increasing demand of high quality of health services, challenges are addressed to all health providers to improve their skills in providing services to clients. Given that preventive dentistry clinical practice has not been satisfying, providing media as students’ guidelines is necessary. Objective: The study aims to explain the influence of multimedia use in order to improve Pit Fissure Sealant (PFS) practical skills of dental nursing students. Methods: It was a quasi-experimental study with pretest and post-test control group design. Population of the study was selected from dental nursing students in Yogyakarta. A hundred sample was drawn purposively from the population and distributed equally to two groups. The first group was exposed by PFS practice video whilst the second group as control was exposed only by the guidebook. Results: Initially, students in the control group have better PFS practical score compared to their counterpart in the treatment group. Nevertheless, after the exposure of different media, students in the treatment group demonstrated a better post-test score on their PFS practical skills. The statistical analysis certifies that there was a significant difference in the mean score of PFS practical skills of the students before and after the treatment. Conclusion: Video as a new media is able to improve the students’ motivation in learning than any traditional media such as books. It should be noted however, both printed media (guidebooks) and video only provides one way communication. Therefore, designing an interactive media using video where the user can be the sender not only the receiver, can be considered for further research.

Abstract

Background: Missing or lost teeth after tooth extraction may lead to tooth decay and infection. Many cases of tooth loss will not be followed with prosthodontics or rehabilitative treatments. Patients might be aware of partial denture, however no concern to replace the missing teeth.Aims: This study was to determine the relationship between the levels of knowledge and interest in using the partial dentures. Methods: This study was an observational analytic survey with cross sectional design, conducted in October - November 2017. The work involved 60 patients who had pulled teeth at Kanina Dental Clinic, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, who had been selected using purposive sampling technique. Levels of knowledge and interest among the participants were assessed by a set of questionnaire. The data obtained was then analysed using Kendall's Tau test. Results: From the study, we found that 35 respondents had good knowledge and high interest to use partial dentures (58.3%), while the other 22 patients (40%) had been noted with less knowledge and poor maintenance. From Kendall's Tau test, we found a significant relationship between the patient's knowledge and partial removal denture maintenance of p value = 0.003. This study also highlights the role of patients’ peer to their decision to use the removable partial dentures. Conclusion: Respondents may consider loosing teeth affected to their physical aesthetics, masticatory system, and speaking comfort. Data shows the higher knowledge to the benefits of partial dentures the higher their interest in using removable partial dentures after tooth extraction.

Abstract

Background: Anemia in Indonesia is mostly caused by micronutrient deficiency such as iron. Although much have been done to address anemia in the community, the problem remains. As health is not solely government’s responsibility, community participation should be seen as an alternative effective approach. Objective: The influence of women’s organizations to community participation and their self-sustenance in anemia prevention and control was examined. Methods: It was a quasi-experimental study with pretest and post-test control group design involving 30 women in reproductive-age who were selected through a multi-stage random sampling method; and 20 health providers, of whom were members of Dasa Wisma, posyandu cadres, PKK, and Karang Taruna. At the intervention group, women’s organization in anemia prevention and control was enabled in order to increase community participation. Hemoglobin level was measured as the outcome of the intervention program. Results: By empowering women’s organization, participation level of community members in the intervention group significantly increased, shown by family’s willingness to provide and consume iron-sufficient foods in their daily diets. As an outcome, hemoglobin level of reproductive-aged women at the intervention group slightly raised from its initial level, whilst the level in the control group was relatively stagnant. Conclusion: Involving the community member has been proven as an effective approach in anemia prevention and control. Given that women’s social movement are existed in many settings, therefore, empowering such organization as a manifestation of community participation can be applied in other setting, and also for other health program.

Abstract

TITLETHE INFLUENCE OF SMOKE LIQUID OF COCONUT SHELL ON PLAQUE INDEXABSTRACTCoconut shell contains high antioxidant an anti bacterial agent which could influence oral bacterial growth in dental plaque. The extract – known as liquid smoke – is the vinegar of biomass pyrolysis process. This study wanted to know the influence of mouth rinsing using liquid smoke of coconut shell toward dental plaque’s existence. This study was used the quasi-experiment method. The design of this study was a pre-post the  experiment. The samples were randomized on JKG’s students which were 24 students. The data were analyzed Anova Test. The result showed that there wasa significant influence before and after mouth rinsing with liquid smoke (p-value 0.017; 0.001; 0.000 < 0.005) in each group. The increase of the concentration of liquid smoke had a significant influence on the decrease of plaque index (p-value 0.015 < 0.005). It’s suggested that this research had to be continued to find out the influence of the concentrations of smoke liquid on oral bacteria.
