Abstract

Background: Education providers in many ways short of expectations. Education strategy is essential in teaching and learning activities. Student who has motivation and learning strategies tends to devote all their ability to get the optimal learning results according to the expected goals. Understanding student motivation and learning strategies will help institution to facilitate students for their study success. This study aimed of determine differences in student motivation and learning strategies at Faculty of Dentistry, University of Hasanuddin among students with collaborative learning and problem-based learning educational strategies.Method: This was quantitative research with observational analytic cross-sectional study design. The subjects were all students of class 2007 and 2008 data were collected using Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). Descriptive analysis and Mann-Whitney test were used to analysis the data.Results: The subjects consisted of 84 students of class 2007 and 79 students of class 2008. The mean score of learning motivation and learning strategy were higher among students with PBL than students with collaborative learning. There we are significant differences in learning strategies with different education strategies except in organization (p=0,369) and anxiety (p=0.058).Conclusion: There are differences in the learning motivation and learning strategies in students with collaborative learning and problem based learning education strategies, except in organization and anxiety component. Learning motivation and learning strategies in problem based learning students are higher than collaborative learning students.

Abstract

Negative impact of poor oral health on quality of life in the elderly is an important public health problem. Around theworld, poor oral health in the elderly seemed to edentulous, dental caries and periodontal disease. It was reported astrong correlation between the number of teeth lost by a score of OHIP-14. This study aimed to determine the relationshipof oral health and quality of life of the elderly in District of Malili, East Luwu. Pathfinder pilot survey-based studyconducted in 15 villages in that district on 10-12 November 2011. The subjects were elderly people who come to thevillage hall, which is guided by a questionnaire interviewed and met the inclusion criteria. The results showed that theelderly average index of DMF-T at 11.11, which indicated that the oral health status was significantly positivelycorrelated with quality of life (OHIP-14), with a correlation value of 0.170. It was concluded that the higher the valueof DMF-T, the more affect the quality of life of the elderly.

Abstract

Management of child behavior begins when the children enters the dental environment and continues until they leaveit. Fear of dentist and dental treatment have been considered a major hindrance to provide a quality dental services.Establish a friendly relationship with children is important for dentist to combat patient’s fears and to deliver effectiveand efficient treatment. The aim of this study was to assess children’s feelings and attitudes toward their dentist inHalimah Dg. Sikati Dental Hospital. A questionnaire designed to evaluate children’s attitudes and preferences towarddentists was completed by 45 children (29 females, 19 males) who attended the hospital. It showed 80% of the subjectreported that they had been to the dentist before; 84.4% report liked their visit, and 8.9% were afraid. A 93,3% of thechildren preferred their dentist to wear a white coat, while 80% preferred them to wear a mask, 82.2% preferred tobe treated by a female dentist, while 77,8% reported that their sibling had a pleasant perception. 80% of the childrenpreferred that their dentist wear the formal attire. Fear of local anesthesia and tooth extraction were the most commonreasons cited for not liking dental treatment. It was concluded that children have strong perceptions and preferences regarding their dentists.
