Abstract

Hylocereus polyrhizus Britton and Rose (Red dragon fruit) has been shown to have antioxidant activity which contains vitamin C, polyphenol, and flavonoid. This research was aimed to investigate antioxidant effectivity from H. polyrhizus in form of lotion. Lotion were made with 5 concentrations from H. polyrhizus methanol extract which were 0.04; 0.08; 0.16; 0.32 and 0.64%. The antioxidant activity of lotion was measured using DPPH method. The research showed that H. polyrhizus methanol extract had antioxidant activity with inhibition concentration were 19.99±0.33; 25.01±0.08; 39.14±0.04; 66.69±0.12 and 83.37±0.05. The result showed significant differences on antioxidant activity. The physical stability observation of five formula with cycling test method showed unstability because of discolouration (oxidation). As well as the methods of mechanical test showed unstability of lotion because saponification process.

Abstract

Drying is the most important step to keep the compound stability in simplicia. The aimed of this study was to know the effect of drying methods on antioxidant activity in Melastoma malabathricum L. The drying methods were tested on oven-drying at 40°C, direct sunlight, indirect sunlight, air-drying at ± 25°C and fresh samples as control. The result revealed that the drying methods of simplicia were significant differences for antioxidant activity in Melastoma malabathricum L. (p<0,05). Drying method that has the highest antioxidant activity was by air-drying at ± 25°C is 54.60%.

Abstract

Buah belimbing wuluh (Averrhoa bilimbi Linn.) memiliki aktivitas antihiperkolesterolemia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui potensi antihiperkolesterolemia, menentukan dosis optimal dan mengetahui pengaruh pemberian ekstrak air buah belimbing wuluh (Averrhoa bilimbi Linn) terhadap indeks organ tikus. Hewan uji yang digunakan adalah tikus jantan galur Wistar. Hewan uji dibagi menjadi 4 kelompok, yaitu kontrol normal, kontrol negatif, kontrol positif (Simvastatin 0,18 mg/kgbb), dan ekstrak air buah belimbing wuluh dosis 63 mg/kgbb. Parameter yang dilihat adalah, kadar kolesterol total diukur dengan metode CHOD-PAP, berat badan tikus selama 50 hari, dan indeks organ yang selanjutnya diuji secara statistik (One way ANOVA). Pada parameter penurunan kadar kolesterol darah tikus antara kelompok positif dengan kelompok ekstrak air buah belimbing wuluh dosis 63 mg/kgbb tidak mengalami perbedaan bermakna secara statistik. Sedangkan, kelompok ekstrak air buah belimbing wuluh dosis 63 mg/kgbb dan kontrol negatif mengalami perbedaan bermakna (p<0,05). Simpulan, ekstrak air buah belimbing wuluh dosis 63 mg/kgbb memiliki efek antihiperkolesterolemia yang dilihat dari penurunan kadar kolesterol total dari hari ke-30 dan hari ke-50,serta secara statistik berbeda bermakna dengan kontrol negatif,  dan dapat mempengaruhi indeks organ limpa dan pankreas namun tidak mempengaruhi indeks organ ginjal, hati, jantung, dan paru-paru.

Abstract

Alpha arbutin is a hydrophilic compound which is difficult to pass trough the stratum corneum. One of the effort to increase the penetration of the drug through the stratum corneum is by making in niosome system. This study aims to determine the optimum concentration of span 60 to improve the entrapment efficiency of niosome and investigate the increasing penetration of alpha arbutin using the niosome system in the preparation of the gel in vitro. Niosome consist a mixture of span 60 and cholesterol it made by thin layer hydration method. Concentration of span 60 was varied into three formulas were 100, 150 and 200 µmoL. The formulation of gel was made in two formulas including formulation of niosome alpha arbutin and alpha arbutin in gel. The determination of enterapment efficiency showed that formula 100µmol has an optimum enterapment efficiency by 99.09%±0.1. The in vitro penetration tests with shed snake skin membrane showed that usage span 60 as a niosome composer could increase penetration of alpha arbutin in gel formulation with cumulative numbers of diffusion in 8 hours was 91.62%±2.32 compared to alpha arbutin in gel without niosome system about 73.00%±0.94.7.

Abstract

Ciplukan (Physalis angulata L.) empirically has been used to treat sore throat, inflammatory of the airways, gingivitis, and other diseases. This research was to determine the inflammatory activity of water herb extract of P. angulata L. on white male rats edema Wistar strain induced carragenan. P. angulata L. herbs were extracted using infundation method and were dried with frezee drying. Parameter that would be observed of this research was the inhibition foot edema of rat after induction of 0.1 mL of λ-carragenan 2% for 360 minutes. Measurement of edema volume was using pletismometer. The results of this research showed water herb extract of P. angulata L. in dose 100, 200, and 400 mg/kgBW has potensial as an antiinflammatory drug by percent respectively were 20.13; 28.93; and 34.70%. The three doses hasn’t showed any significant difference (p>0.05) with the positive control of diclofenac sodium dose 4.5 mg/kgBW was 33.90%. Conclusion of this research states water herb extract of P. angulata L. has antiinflammatory activity with effective dose of 400 mg/kgBW.

Abstract

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa Korth.) has been known to have an analgesic opioid effect (antinociceptive). The major compound of kratom leaf is mitraginin, which has strong affinity on opioid receptor. The aim of this research is to prove antinociceptive effect of aqueous fraction of kratom leaf and its effective dose. The simplicia of kratom leaf was extracted with methanol 96%. Methanol extract fractioned with n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and aquadest. This research used hot plate method on male Swiss Albino mice. The subject divided to 5 groups, negative control group, morphine 5,46 mg/kgBW, aqueous fraction 140, 240 and 560 mg/kgBW. Latency time was measured every 15 minutes over 2 hours period. Analytic statistical of latency time using One Way ANOVA shows that the aqueous fraction at the dose of 140, 280 and 560 mg/kgBW significantly differentiate with negative control group and positive control group. The antinociceptive effect increases with increasing doses. The three doses showed that the antinociceptive effect was no better than the positive control (Morphine)

Abstract

Niacinamide is one of the components of cosmeceutical products that reported to have skin benefits for the treatment of skin pigmentation, acne and wrinkles. However, the dermal penetration of niacinamide is poor. The carrier system which can be selected to carry the compound through the stratum corneum layer is the niosome system using span 60. This study was aimed to determine the concentration of span 60 that can trap niacinamide optimally and the ability of niosome system span 60 to increase in vitro penetration of niacinamide in gel formulation. The different formulations of nicotinamide niosome were formulated with variance concentrations of Span 60, that is, formula A 100 μmol, formula B 150 μmol, and formula C 200 μmol. The entrapment efficiency testing was conducted using dialysis membrane. The gel formulation was prepared in two formulas, niacinamide niosome gel and niacinamide gel (without niosomes) and tested diffusion using Franz diffusion cell flow-through type. The result show that Formula A provides the most optimum entrapment efficiency of 99.03±0.026%. The results of the in vitro skin penetration studies for 8 hours indicate that the niosomal formulation using Span 60 could increase skin penetration with the percent cumulative amount of niacinamide niosomes was 82.87±1.6932% compared to niacinamide in gel without noisome system about 70.27±5,3212%.

Abstract

Phyllanthus niruri L. is known to promote hair growth. Menthol is one of the enhancers which promotes drug penetration into the skin. The aim of this research is to determine the potential of menthol in P. niruri Ethanol Extracts gel preparation as a hair growth promoter. The test animals were randomized into 4 groups: normal group, negative control (gel without extract and menthol), E1 group (Ethanol Extracts of P. niruri 5% gel without menthol) and E2 group (Ethanol Extracts of P. niruri 5% gel with menthol). Hair growth activity test was conducted by applying the gel on the rats’ back, and hair length was measured on the 7th, 14th and 21st days, while the hair was weighed on the 21st day. The results showed that the E2 group had an average hair length and hair weight of 12.45±3.457 mm and hair weight of 28.53±7.681 mg, greater than the E1 group of 10.67±2.455 mm and 19.87±9.552 mg respectively. Based on these results, it can be concluded that adding menthol in P. niruri Ethanol Extract gel preparation can influence hair growth and thickness.

Abstract

Meniran (Phyllanthus niruri L.) is a plant that is reported to contain flavonoids and shows the activity as a type 2 anti-diabetic by a mechanism of inhibiting the absorption of glucose. Flavonoid compounds such as rutin, quercetin and hesperidin shows anti-diabetic activity. This research aims to determine the levels of total flavonoids and docking studies of flavonoids from meniran against α-amylase and α-glucosidase. Analysis of content of total flavonoids utilizes colorimetric method using AlCl3 and routine standard, the docking study uses Autodock Vina (version 1.1.2) program with the assistance of AutoDockTools (ADT) and visualization of docking results using Discovery Study. The results of the determination of total flavonoids level was 12.32 ± 0.53 mgRE/g extract whereas in ethyl acetate fraction and water each were 19.33±0,68 and 20.07±1.23 mgRE/g respectively. Results of all flavonoids dicking study shows the potential to bind to both receptors, rutin has better binding energy towards α-amylase whereas against α-glucosidase is demonstrated by 3-O -β-D-glucopyranosyl-(2-1)-O-β-D-xylopyranoside quercetin.

Abstract

Extraction is an important step in separating bioactive compounds from the plant. The selection of extraction technique is also important in the standardization of herbal products, for if not observed it can remove the desired soluble constituents. One of Indonesia’s endemic plants which have been proven to have an antioxidant activity is Salam leaves (Syzygium polyanthum). This study aims to determine the effect of extraction method on total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of S. polyanthum leaves by counteracting free radicals mechanism using DPPH. The S. polyanthum leaves were extracted by maceration, soxletation, and infusa methods, and tested for the total phenolic content and the antioxidant activity. The results showed that the total phenolic content of each method extration is different. The total of the phenolic content extraction by maceration, soxhlet, and infusa method respectively were 338.62±21.3; 227.72±21.6; and 144.48±8.2 mgGAE/g. The best antioxidant activity was maceration method with IC50 17.53±0.11 µg/mL followed by soxhlet and infusa which were 18.73±0.31 and 40.26±0.18 µg/mL. The research conclusion is that the extraction method has an effect on the total phenol and antioxidant activity of S. polyanthum leaves.
