Abstract

Acute respiratory infections (ARI) is one of health problems in Indonesia, which are caused by viruses. But on a visit to health facility, physicians prescribe antibiotics as therapy. Irrational prescribing of antibiotics led to bacterial resistance. The use of amoxicillin and erythromycin as the first and second line drugs in patients with ARI causes high resistance to them. This study aimed to determine differences sensitivity of amoxicillin and erythromycin against secondary infection of ARI. This was a descriptive analytical study, using Mann-Whitney different test and determination of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) antibiotics using logarithmic regression. The sample was obtained from specimens of patient ARI with secondary infection who visited UPT Pelayanan Kesehatan Universitas Jember. Five of twenty two specimens successfully cultured in Blood Agar Plate (BAP). The cultures showed five bacteria with Gram-positive cocci morphology and two with Gram-negative bacilli morphology. Mann-Whitney test showed significant difference between two drugs (p=0.008), where 85% bacteria were resistant to amoxicillin and 40% were to erythromycin. Logarithmic regression results, obtained amoxicillin’s MIC was 7.48-9.02 mg/L and erythromycin’s was 0.23-4.95 mg/L. It can be concluded, there was a significant difference between two drugs, where bacteria that cause secondary infections are no longer sensitive to amoxicillin.   Keywords: Amoxicillin, Erythromycin, ARI

Abstract

The main problem that is often faced by athlete is fatigue. It can decrease maximum muscle strength. To overcome this problem, many athletes use ergogenic aids such as watermelon. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of watermelon juice on reduction of muscle fatigue and delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after weight training. Muscle fatigue was measured by maximum repetition done by the subjects in the last set and DOMS was measured by post-training muscle soreness intensity. By using a randomized crossover design, 20 subjects were recruited then divided into 2 groups, a treatment group and a control group. The subjects were asked to do a training protocol to induce muscle fatigue and DOMS. As much as 500 ml watermelon juice was consumed in 1 of 2 training sessions and a placebo was consumed in the other. The number of repetitions showed a significant increase on treatment group than control group (p<0,05). Passive muscle soreness intensity and active muscle soreness intensity showed a significant decrease on 24 hours and 48 hours post-training after administration of watermelon juice (p=0,000). We conclude that there was an effect of watermelon juice on muscle fatigue and DOMS after weight training.   Keywords: weight training, muscle fatigue, DOMS, watermelon, citrulline

Abstract

In sports, caffeine is oftenly consumed as a stimulant in intense exercise. Caffeine consists in black tea with the content is about one third to eighth compared to black coffee, The aim of this research was to find out the effect of black tea to VO2max and heart rate recovery time after treadmill exercise. There were 2 groups. Control group which consumed placebo and treatment group which consumed black tea. Both group performed Bruce Treadmill Test Protocol. The results showed that the mean value of VO2max were 32,525 for control group and 38,442 for treatment group. Data analysis using T-paired test showed that treatment group had significantly higher VO2max value than control group (p=0,0001). Heart rate change data showed that heart rate frequency in treatment group from every fixed time was higher than the control group The heart rate recovery time was 59 minutes for control group and 66 minutes for treatment group. In conclusion, consumption of black tea before exercise would increase VO2max value and extend the heart rate recovery time.   Keywords: Black tea, VO2max, heart rate recovery, Bruce treadmill test protocol

Coffee can be classified as a psicostimulant which cause person stay awake. Coffee contains any ingredients such as caffeine.Caffeine could improve the performance of athletes. VO2max is a highest ratio of oxygen consumed during intense physical activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of caffeine consumption on VO2max and exercise recovery pulse. The study used experimental research with Randomized Clinical Trial (RCT) methods. There were 20 volunteers, who were divided into two groups. The control group was given a drink that contains no caffeine while the treatment group was given a drink containing caffeine. Then all volunteers were asked to perform Modified Bruce Treadmill Test procedure until exhaustion occurred then VO2max.The next 4 days were washing out period where the control and treatment groups swap the roles. The results showed the average value of VO2max in the treatment group was 30.69 ml/ kg/min higher than in the control group 25.98 ml/ kg/min, but the duration of pulse recovery in the treatment group was 127 minutes slower than the control group, 121 minutes, indicating to its effects as a stimulant. Abstract

Schizophrenia is one of the health problems in developing countries and developed countries. Risk factors that may affect the reccurrence of schizophrenia consist of internal and eksternal factors. The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors which affect the recurrence of schizophrenia. This study was a quantitative research with cross sectional approach. Sample in this study was obtained by total sampling from family of schizophrenia patients who visited Polyclinic Psychiatry dr. Soebandi Public Hospital of Jember. The factors studied were age, gender, education, occupation, economic condition, schizophrenia onset, type of schizophrenia, familys knowledge, character of family, character of paramedic, physic factor, disobedience medication, and type of medication . Data analysis was performed by chi square test and logistic regression. Chi square test found a significant factor that was age (p=0.029), schizophrenia onset (p=0.037), physical factor (p=0,022), and disobedience medication (p=0.021) while other factors did not significant. Results of logistic regression test results obtained for age was (p=0.019, OR=0.279), schizophrenia onset (p=0.068, OR=0.224), character of family (p=0.035, OR=0,214) and to disobedience medication (p=0.013, OR=4,064). It can be concluded that the most factor that affect the recurrence of schizophrenia was disobedience medication.   Keywords: recurrence, schizophrenia

Abstract

Obesity can cause serious problems that will lead to poor quality of life, increased morbidity and mortality rate. Slow-release metformin will work longer in the body with a single dose everyday be an alternative drug for weight loss. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of slow-release metformin compared to metformin regular to body weight and calorie intake in volunteers with obesity. The study was conducted on 16 volunteers who were divided into two groups in pairs. Volunteers will be measured weight and calorie intake with a 24-hour food recall method, data was taken at the time before the intervention, the end of week 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. The result obtained weight loss better in the group receiving slow-release metformin by 5.08% compared to the group receiving regular metformin by 2,60%, but there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of calorie intake during the study. The conclusion of this study is a slow-release metformin is greater in weight loss than regular metformin, but does not affect the amount of calorie intake.Keywords: Metformin, slow-release, weight loss, calorie intake, obesity

Abstract

The prevalence of obesity in children has steadily increased, not only in the world but also in Indonesia. Urban area as a central of economic led the higher prevalence of childhood obesity than in rural areas. The objective of this study was to analyze the risk factors associated with obesity among urban elementary school childrens in Jember. A cross sectional study was conducted with a total sample of 176 pupils. Anthropometric status determined using body mass index for age and obesity stated if z-score exceed >+2SD based on WHO 2007. The questionnaire about risk factors was filled with interview. Analysis data performed with univariate, bivarate, and multivariate analysis. This study showed the prevalence of obesity was 17%. Overall, our result showed that in non modifiable risk factors, the prevalence of obesity was significantly higher in children who had obese parent when compared to children who hadnt. Children who had obese parent had the more risk of obesity by 6 times. In modifiable risk factors, children who had meal more than 3 times per day had the more risk of obesity by 2 times. Drinking milk frequently according to Dietary Guideline for American 2015 has a protective factors against obesity.Keywords: childhood obesity, urban, risk factor

Abstract

Basil leaves are widely used as herbal remedies and have proven many benefits because the content of phytonutrients includes antioxidants, but at certain doses a compound retains a probability of causing toxicity in the body. This study aims to determine the acute toxicity of ethanolic extract of basil leaves seen from the value of LD50 range and renal histopathology which is the vital organ of the target of toxicity in the body. The method of acute oral toxicity test was OECD 420 fix dose procedure method with a group of 5 Balb/c female mice given a multilevel dosage. The initial dose is 2000 mg/Kg.b.w selected on a sighting study as a dose that may cause mild toxicity symptoms but does not cause death. There are 2 groups consist of treatment with dose at LD50 value and control. The result of this research showed that LD50 value of ethanol extract of Ocimum sanctum > 2000 mg/Kg.b.w. The mean renal histopathologyc scores between the control and the treatment were significantly different by The Mann-Whitney test with significance value of p=0.018. Ocimum sanctum ethanolic extract is classified as non-toxic compounds but there was a change in renal histopathology of mice in the form of focal lesions after acute exposure at highest dose of OECD 420 method. Abstract

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a disease caused by dengue virus transmitted by Aedes aegyptifemale mosquitoes with four major clinical manifestations, such as high fever, hemorrhage,hepatomegaly, and signs of circulatory failure. Indonesia was reported as the 2nd country with thelargest dengue cases among 30 endemic countries. The larvicidal powder is used as one of thedengue virus vector controllers. This study aims to determine the effect of ethanol extract of smallgooseberry leaves (Phyllantus niruri L.) to the death of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. This study usedquasi experimental method with post test only controlled group design with 1 positive control group(Temephos), 1 group of negative control (tap water), and 5 treatment groups (0.0625%, 0.125%,0.25% , 0.5% and 1% extract) used 20 larvaes of Aedes aegypti instar III each group. The results of thetreatment group extract with a concentration of 0.5% and 1% obtained 100% dead larvae. The resultof linear regression test showed the effect of meniran leaf extract on the death of larvae Ae. aegyptiwith R2 value of 65.2%. The larvacid activity of ethanol extract leaves meniran against larvae Ae.aegypti instar III was directly proportional to concentration with LC50 of 0.174% with 95% confidenceinterval (0.155-0.195).
