Abstract

The current study aims at exploring the intended meaning and structure of a poem entitled ‘Do You Remember Our Love?’ written by a poet, © Karina Del Campo (2009) in both interpretational and systemic functional perspectives. In the former, the poem was examined interpretatively in order to find out the possible stance of the poet; meanwhile the later was an analytical representation of systemic functional grammar in the framework of construing the three domains of meanings: ideational, interpersonal and textual in order to arrive at the field, the tenor and the mode of the discourse.  It turns out that the poem is  a reflection of a woman’s feeling (the poet’s) toward her ex-boyfriend—finely described in a repeated style of the major clause, supported and elaborated in several minor clauses. The poet tries very hard to ignite her ex-boyfriend’s love memories with her and to possibly invite him to reunite even though it seems to be a mission impossible. The poem has both social and psychological impacts on the poet herself and the readers in a wider scope.

Abstract

Teens are identical with instability and anxiety for which they need to express as their individual self-actualization. So far there have been no such efforts to accommodate their needs through literary works. The current study explores the dictions employed in English poems written by the students (identified as teens) of English Letters Study Program to find about how far a poem can be as a means for teens to express their feelings. The subjects were assigned to write poems of their interests. The 32 poems were then analyzed and interpreted to find out how most students expressed their anxieties in terms of love to parents, love to boy/girlfriends, friendship, hope, admiration, disappointment, encouragement, divinity and educational goals. The findings indicate that they turn out to be able to write poems when they are emotionally touched. In particular, they employed a limited range of lexical items to express their love to their parents, boy/girlfriends, in addition to love to their college in pursuit of their educational goals. As the general practice of teaching literature ending up with the students? analyzing literary works, it is high time that they were assigned to write poems to express their feelings.   Keywords: anxieties, poem, love, emotionally touched

Abstract

This  study aims to find out whether or not group discussion is effective to enhance  students’ critical reading  ability. The subjects were 64 students who were divided  into two groups; one consisting of 32 students assigned as the experimental group, and the other consisting of 32 students as the control group. The experimental group studied critical reading through group discussion while  the control group studied critical reading through a conventional way.  Both groups were taught for 12 sessions, each lasting for 90 minutes. The data were collected by means of critical reading test. In the study, it was hypothesized that there was a significant difference between the critical reading  ability of the students taught by employing  group discussion  activities and those taught employing a conventional way. The result of the t-test was 5.84 while the t-table was 3.6. It indicated that group discussion activities had improved the students’ critical reading  ability significantly. Abstract

This paper explores the employment of code-switching in Social Media ‘Whats-app (WA)’ Bahasa text, namely from Bahasa to Javanese, English and/or to Arabic. Two WA groups are chosen namely ‘Trending Topic’ and ‘LPPM’ WA group as they are more universal chat places for Unissula academia than other faculty limited members of WA groups. This is a descriptive qualitative research, deeply analyzing several purposefully selected data. Interviews with some members of WA groups were performed to gain some data related to the use of code switching. The writer found that the main reason for code-switching is therefore to keep on communication by using technology-related, Koranic-related or Javanese-colloquial terms to try to refer to certain concepts of which the equivalence for such terms are not available in Bahasa. Another reason is to gain closer-relationship among attendants. For this socio-linguistic phenomenon, the writer feels that it is necessary for Bahasa experts or scholars to coin and popularize more Bahasa lexical items required to accommodate the new concepts. Key words: code-switching, Bahasa, Bahasa Experts, technology-related terms, Koranic-related terms, Javanese-colloquialterms

Abstract

This article discusses some English phonological rules and their phonological process. The rules dealt with in this article include aspiration, nasalization, vowel lengthening and regressive assimilation with fixed spelling—just to limit; despite the fact that there are more phonological rules. Each of the rules under study is described in terms of generative phonology followed data analysis to justify the application of the rules in line with the underlying forms. More significantly, the study will be able to give linguistic evidence that English has rules in their systems of sounds that are rule-governing and generative in nature   Key words: phonological rules and processes, aspiration, nasalization, vowel lengthening, regressive assimilation, rule-governed

Abstract

This study tried to re-examine the the significant role of literature as readingmaterials in class, and the appropriateness of involving students in teaching andlearning process in which they were supposed to provide reading materials forclass discussions. With the text provided by the students, hopefully they would beencouraged to read; thereby increasing their reading interests. However, the twocycleaction research revealed that such learning and teaching processes did notcontribute to improving their reading preferences. Interestingly the seemingly lessinterests in reading did not have any effects on their reading scores. There weresignificant increases in the pre-test and the post-test, indicating that the studentsstill managed to read the texts for good scores. It is therefore recommended thatthe use of authentic texts in line with the students’ major be still preferable.

Abstract

The current article aimed at presenting an overview of types, requirements and procedures of certification in Islam education for the students who have passed the examination in order for countries outside United Arab Emirates. Core materials on the subject were compiled from various resources to guarantee the validity of the information. It turned out that there were a number of concepts of certification pertinent to etymology and practices. One distinctive issue of certification was that, in Islam education, certification was attached to the authority of professor or sheikh, not the institution, and the government has no right whatsoever with respect to certification. This, in fact, differentiates certification in Islam World from that practiced in the West. Keywords: Certificate, Certification, Etymological Concept, Islam Education System

Abstract

Anyone on earth may at one time or another reflects him or herself in a way he or she feels comfortable?be it as simple as writing up a phrase ?Go to Hell with Communism!? on a wall of an old building. In this respect, he or she has reflected him or herself that he or she does not agree with the ideology of communism. The current study investigated to justify that literary works reflect the ?selves? of the authors in one or more possible ways. A poet may, to reflect him or herself, be characterized as employing particular styles or diction. A novelist may try to involve in one of the characters he or she has developed in order to reflect him or herself. In this study, a novel entitled ?Pride and Prejudice? by Jane Austen (1813) was investigated to justify that the author (Austen) reflected herself in one of the characters in the novel. The findings reveal that Austen tried to manifest herself in one of the characters called ?Elizabeth Bennet? in three different ways: (1) how she behaved in her family (loving all family members, especially being close to her father), (2) how she spent most of the time?reading to broaden the horizon of thinking. As a result, she could (3) skillfully negotiate with other people through their positive sides. The study concludes that everyone, of whatever professions he or she has, will reflect him or herself in a way he or she may not realize.
