Abstract

Background: Low birth weight (LBW) care in hospitals often causes discomfort and stress which affect changes in physiological function. Modification of gentle human touch with the left lateral position is described as a treatment for developmental care that supports the comfort and supportive position of the lungs which is expected to have a positive effect on oxygen saturation and respiratory frequency for infants.Aims: This study aimed to find the effect of gentle human touch modification with a left lateral position on oxygen saturation in LBW infants. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental design study. The population in this study was 36 LBW babies who received care, selected at a private and public hospital in Central Java, Indonesia, using a consecutive sampling technique. The infants were then divided equally to: (i) a group who received a standard human touch given at the hospital, with a supine position (control), and (ii) a group where the infants have been provided with a modified gentle human touch with left lateral position (intervention). The statistical test used was Mann Whitney and Wilcoxon test. Results: From this study, it is acknowledged that modification gentle human touch with the left lateral position was more effective in increasing oxygen saturation than the control group when viewed from clinical changes. The oxygen saturation levels after intervention reached 98 to 99%. However, from the statistical analysis, it has been noted that the mean difference between the two groups is not significantly different at a level of 0.05.Conclusions: A modified gentle human touch with the left lateral position proposed in this study presents a positive contribution to the oxygen saturation of low birth weight infants. Thus, the findings may recommend the modification as a procedure in a hospital care unit for low birth weight infants at hospitals or at home. Keywords: Gentle human touch, Left lateral position, Low birth weight babies, Oxygen saturation.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of early ambulation on post partum hemorhage in independent of midwifery practice. The research was a quasi-experimental with two group post-test research design. The number of samples was 30 subjects. The early ambulation programs consists of lay aside - sit down position, and lay aside-sit down-stand up position for 1 to 2 hours. Post partum hemorhage was measured by counting the amount of bleeding during post partum. Afterwards, the data were analyzed using Mann Whitney test. The results showed that the average amount of bleeding within the experimental group decreased 6.33 cc after the early ambulation with lay aside - sit down position in the first and second hours as well as in the control group which declined 9.66 cc after the early ambulation lay aside-sit down-stand up position 1 hour to 2 hours. However, there was no significant diference between post partum hemorhage in the experimetal and the control group (z=1.131, p>0.05). It can be concluded that either early ambulation with lay aside - sit down position or lay aside-sit down-stand up position for 1 hour to 2 can decrease post partum hemorhage.

Abstract

Labor process is complex. Anatomically and physiologically must be monitored during labor process. Normal labor case is higher than labor with medical interventional. In Indonesia, labor process training still used conventional simulation media. The simulation can’t determined about labor process and monitoring during labor process. Thus, model that can simulate of labor process and monitoring during labor process in stage I and II must be provided This research expected to contribute in learning media to simulate normal labor process and monitored during labor process in stage I and II. Biomodeling expected to provide understanding about labor process, stage of labor, and monitoring during labor process. This research conducted with approach method scenario based model for simulate gameplay for normal labor process and monitoring in stage I and II. Based on literature about reproductive system organ and physiological, also must be monitored about physiological change during labor process with partograf  WHO standard and analyze parameter to determined labor process closely with the reality. Beside that, theory of labor process and pushing in contraction also be analyze  to find the basic formula from physic and mathematical concept. From the basic formula, modified basic formula for scenario gameplay simulation of normal labor process and monitoring in stage I and II.The result of this research was produce biomodeling to determine normal labor process, the stage of labor, and physiological monitoring for report that monitored appropriate with WHO partograf standard. This biomodeling expected become learning and training media for midwivery and doctor include student of medical and midwifery. Model that is produce from this research can be develop to abnormal labor process (medical interventional) include labor complication.

Abstract

Background: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) and lullaby music methods have been considered as the alternative treatment for vital sign changes in low birth weight infants. However, little is known about the combination of the two methods. Objective: To identify effectiveness of combinations of Kangaroo mother care and Lullaby music methods on changes in vital signs in low birth weight infants. Methods: A quasi experiment with non-equivalent control group design. This study was conducted on October– December 2016 at the General Hospital of Ambarawa and General Hospital of Ungaran, Semarang. There were 36 samples selected using consecutive sampling divided into three groups, namely: 1) a group of LBW infants with the combination of KMC and lullaby music, 2) a LBW infant group with the lullaby music intervention, and 3) a control group given standard care in LBW infants by KMC method. Paired t-test and MANOVA test were used to analyzed the data. Results: Findings revealed that there were significant differences between the combination group, lullaby music group, and control group in temperature (p=0.003), pulse (p=0.001), respiration (p=0.001), and oxygen saturation (p=0.014) with significant value of <0.05, which indicated that there was a statistically significant difference in vital sign changes among the three groups. Conclusion: The combination of KMC method and Lullaby music intervention was effective on vital sign changes (temperature, pulse, respiration, and oxygen saturation) compared with the lullaby music group alone and control group with KMC method in low birth weight infants. It is suggested that the combination of KMC and Lullaby music methods can be used as an alternative to improve LBW care for mothers in the NICU and at home and to reach the stability of the baby's vital signs.
