Abstract

Obstace of pakoba (Syzygium luzonense (Merr.) Merr.) cultivation in nursery is  twig caterpillar (Hyposidra talaca WLK) attacks. The Pest symptoms was holes in the leaves especially young leaves; twig caterpillar enable to attack all leaves of pakoba seed. Severe attacks cause death of seedlings. There are five blocks in pakoba nursery that were observed; 1014 pakoba seedlings were grown in these blocks. The average percentage of twig caterpillar’s attack was quite high, reached 49.34%. Twig caterpillar has been controlled by integrated pest management. Chemical control to decrease twig caterpillars attack in nursery has been done by using half dose of insecticide profenofos.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the suitability of using cocopeat as planting media at transplanting containers in the polytube of the cempaka seedlings growth.  The method used in this research was implementing a trial use of cocopeat as transplanting media in the polytube and being compared to the growth of cempaka seedlings in polytubes and polybags containing topsoil.  The parameters observed included percent survival (%), height (cm), and diameter (cm) of the plants.  Through the t-test it was shown that the parameters of diameter, height, and percent survival of the cempaka seedlings using cocopeat as a transplanting media were significantly different than those using top soil as a transplanting media.

Abstract

Fulfillment the needs of Red Jabon (Anthocephalus macrophyllus (Roxb.) Havil) seeds on the other hand can create an unbalanced ecosystem. The availability of red Jabon seed was becoming a source of food for pests, then it causes an explosion of pests and pathogens. The disease that most often affect red Jabon seeds, both in the nursery and in the field was red leaf spot (antraknose). The initial step to control red leaf spot disease is the identification of causing. Identification method performed by observation of the symptoms in the field, followed by microscopic observation in a laboratory. Based on the identification result, it was known that the disease caused by the fungus Cercospora sp., Colletotrichum sp. and Pestalotia sp. The effect caused by those fungal pathogens was the disruption of the photosynthetic process that ultimately inhibits the growth of red Jabon seeds. The controls which have been done are arranged the watering intensity, isolated the infected seed,and  applied the chemical fungicide.

Abstract

Cempaka  wasian (Magnolia tsiampaca (Miq) Dandy )) is one tree species with high economic value. Cempaka wasian development in the form of community forests in the province of North Sulawesi needs to be supported by the availability of quality seeds. Generally, plant has different effect towards light it received. This study aimed to determine the effect of shade intensity on the growth of seedlings in the nursery. The experimental design used in this research is completely randomized design. The treatments were tested among other shade with a density of 25 % (± 37,350 lux light intensity), the shade with a density of 50 % (± 19,100 lux light intensity) and shade with a density of 75 % (± 8,018 lux light intensity). The results showed that treatment with 50% shade density (± 19,100 lux light intensity) gives the best effect on the growth and quality of seedlings in the nursery.Keywords : cempaka wasian , shade , seeds

Abstract

Abstract

Red Jabon is priority species that projected to be developed in plantation forests of North Minahasa Regency. Red Jabon is can adapt well various environmental conditions. The natural habitat of the red Jabon in North Sulawesi region was known in North Bolaang Mongondow. This study aimed to compare the growth of red jabon at the age of  1 year in North Minahasa Regency and North Bolaang Mongondow. The experiment was conducted in two (2) locations i.e. in Talawaan Village (North Minahasa Regency) and Nunuka Village (North Bolaang Mongondow). Two independent samples t test was conducted to determine the differences in height and diameter growth parameters at two test sites.The results showed that there was no difference in the growth of red Jabon between North Minahasa and North Bolaang Mongondow. The average height and diameter of red Jabon in North Minahasa Regency is at 215.84 cm and 4.34 cm, while the same parameters of North Bolaang Mongondow amounted to 231.79 cm and 4.14 cm. The development efforts on the plantations of red Jabon North Minahasa Regency need to be improved because of the environmental conditions in this region is very suitable for the growth of red Jabon.

Abstract

ABSTRACTCempaka wasian (Magnolia tsiampaca (Miq) Dandy) is a forest tree species that has recalcitrant seed character. Recalcitrant seeds are difficult to be stored for a long period, thus storing the seedlings can be considered as an option. This research aims to determine the effect of growth inhibitors and planting media on seedling growth during storage. The inhibitors used were paclobutrazol 250 ppm, NaCl 0,5% and aquadest (as control treatment). The media used consisted of top soil+cocopeat (1:1), top soil+sand(1:1) and top soil+husk charcoal (1:1). The research design used was a complete randomized factorial pattern design. The results showed that the inhibitors had a significant effect on the growth os seedling height. Provision of 250 ppm paclobutrazol was able to inhibit the growth of seedling height. Planting media also had a significant effect on the growth of height and diameter of the seedlings, also on seed quality index of cempaka wasian. The soil+cocopeat and soil+sand planting media are effective to reduce the growth rate in both height and diameter of cempaka wasian seedlings during storage. Key words: Cempaka, growth inhibitors, planting media, seedling ABSTRAKCempaka wasian (Magnolia tsiampaca (Miq) Dandy) adalah salah satu jenis pohon hutan yang memiliki karakter benih rekalsitran yang sulit disimpan dalam jangka waktu lama, sehingga perlu dilakukan penyimpanan dalam bentuk semai dengan menggunakan bahan semai. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh bahan penghambat pertumbuhan dan media tanam terhadap pertumbuhan semai cempaka wasian selama masa penyimpanan. Bahan penghambat pertumbuhan yang digunakan adalah paklobutrazol 250 ppm, NaCl 0,5%, dan akuades sebagai kontrol. Media tanam terdiri dari tanah+cocopeat (1:1), tanah+pasir (1:1), dan tanah+arang sekam (1:1). Rancangan percobaan yang digunakan adalah rancangan acak lengkap pola faktorial. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan faktor zat penghambat tumbuh memberikan pengaruh yang nyata terhadap pertumbuhan tinggi bibit. Pemberian paklubutrazol 250 ppm mampu menghambat pertumbuhan tinggi bibit. Faktor media tanam memberikan pengaruh nyata terhadap pertumbuhan tinggi, diameter, dan indeks mutu bibit cempaka wasian. Media tanam tanah+sabut kelapa dan tanah+pasir merupakan media yang efektif mengurangi kecepatan pertumbuhan tinggi dan diameter semai cempaka wasian selama penyimpanan.Kata kunci: Cempaka, bahan penghambat pertumbuhan, media tanam, semai

Abstract

Climate change has shortened the rainy season compared to the dry season in North Sulawesi. The El Nino phenomenon occurred in 2015 had an impact on the death of clove plants due to drought. Drought stress testing on several types of forestry plants in the North Sulawesi area is a matter that needs to be done in line with these conditions. Development of cempaka wasian (Magnolia tsiampaca (Miq.) Dandy), nantu (Palaquium obtusifolium Burck), and mahoni (Swietenia macrophylla King) plantations have been carried out by communities in North Sulawesi for a long time and have very good prospects. The research was done by conducting a simulation test at seedling level with treatment to be tested on volume and interval of watering. The watering volume consists of 3 levels, i.e. 100%, 50%, and 25% watering of the field capacity, while the watering intervals included once-daily, 3-day and 5-day watering once for 18 weeks. The results showed that nantu species has better resistance to drought stress conditions compared with mahogany and cempaka wasian.
