Abstract

Musa sp. is one of Kalimantan Selatan original plant that empirically has benefit as herbal medicine for acceleration of wound healing. Banana contain many phytochemicals such us saponin, flavonoid, and tannin which can be used asantibiotic, pain relieving and anti inflamantory. This experiment was aimed to know the toxicity effect of methanolicextract of mauli banana stem inmice livers histopathological. The research is pure experimental study using post testonly with control design. Populations were 25 mices, divided into 5 groups. Group I as negative control group weregiven aquadest, and group II, III, IV, and V were given 125 mg, 250 mg, 500 mg, and 1000 mg methanolic extract ofMauli banana stem. They were given treatment daily as long as 21 days. All of the mice were necropsied at day 22, andthe livers were taken for to examine their histopatological changes. Each liver tissue was processed by paraffin blockembededdand hematoxylin eosin staining method. Histopathological changes were examined based on the present necrosis, degeneration, and megalohepathosit lesions. The results showed light necrosis, degeneration, andmegalohepathosit on the treatment group. The conclusion was methanolic extract of Mauli banana stem dosage 1251000mg/kgbwis not toxic significantly on the liver of mice.

Abstract

Chronic atrophic candidiasis is the pathologic changes on the oral mucous of thedenture wearers, accompanied with erythematous under the denture, usuallyasymptomatic and relates to the yeast of Candida. The irritation factors of chronicatrophic candidiasis are ill fitting denture, using the denture at night and bad oralhygiene. This is a case report of chronic atrophic candidiasis on patient usingremovable denture without systemic disease. The trigger factors were using denture atnight, mistaken of cleaning the denture and dental calculus surround the artificialteeth of denture. Final diagnosis is based on anamnesis, clinical examination andmicrobiology examination. Therapy given was a topical antifungal appliedcontinuously for 7 days after the clinical signs dissapear. The patient was suggested tonot using the denture at night, maintain the cleanliness of the denture regularly andscaling the teeth. It can be concluded that management of chronic atrophiccandidiasis is based on the oral lesion condition, oral hygiene, wearing denture atnight, and the systemic condition.

Abstract

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the common lesion in oral cavity. The etiologyof RAS remains unclear. The trigger factors are genetic, traumatic, abnormalimmunology, digestive diseases, hormonal disturbance, HIV, stress, infection andnutrition deficiency. This is a case report of a patient with minor, multiple, pain, whitecolor ulcer with erythema halo on lips palatum and tongue mucous. One day beforethe ulcers erupted, prodromal symptoms had occurred such as subfebris, malaise, anddizziness. The patient was 19-year-old, male, undergraduate student and with historyof ulceration every month. The clinical diagnosis was primary herpeticgingivostomatitis. The differential diagnosis was RAS. The complete blood count(CBC) result indicated that the patient suffered anemia. He was provided withbenzydamin HCl gargle and oral supplement contain ferrous, vitamins, and minerals.It can be concluded that anemia can be a trigger factor of RAS. Therefore, it isimportant for the dentist to know the clinical signs and manifestations of anemia inoral cavity in order to provide an appropriate treatment.

Abstract

Banana plant especially its trunk contains many kinds of fitokimia such as saponin, flavonoid, and tannin whichfunction as antibiotic and fasten the healing process. Mauli banana stem extract is often used by the people in HuluSungai Utara Banjarmasin Province to fasten healing skin injury. The purpose of this research is to histopathologicallyexamine the effectiveness of Mauli Banana stem extract to the healing process of the mice’s back (Mus musculus)onthe 3rd day. This purely true experimental research with post test only with control design used 27 mices which weredivided to 3 groups. Treatment group was given methanol extract of mauli banana stem whose average scores ofneutrofil and macrofag are representatively 2.333 and 1; negative control group was given aquadest with its averageneutrofil and macrofag scores are representatively 1.055 dan 1.678; and positive control group was given standardmedicine which contained Aloe veraextract with its average neutrofil and macrofag scores are representatively 1.066dan 1.667. The result of Kruskall-Wallis and Mann-Whiney showed a significant difference between treatment groupand negative control group. It can be concluded that the extract methanol of mauli banana stem on the healing processof injury to mancit’s back histopathologically influences the decreasing acute inflamed (neutrofil) cell and theincreasing chronic inflamed (macrophage) cell on the third day. In this case the extract of mauli banana stem ismedically potential to fasten the healing process of injury.

Abstract

There are many traditional medicines that can be used as alternative medicine. One of them is methanol extract ofmauli banana stems. Some people in North of Hulu Sungai Banjarmasin use it as healing agent. The aim of thisresearch was to test antibacterial activity of mauli banana stems extract against Streptococcus mutans; as well as todetermine the effective concentration of its antibacterial activity against S.mutans. The extraction was conducted bymaceration method. Viscous extracts were diluted by using 10% dimethyl sulfoxide and filtered with Whatman paperfilter. Those extracts were divided into four treatment groups: 6.25% (I), 12.5% (II), 25% (III), and control (-)(IV).Groups I, II, and III were added with Muller Hinton media to reach the concentrations. 100 μL S.mutans suspension of0.5 Mc Farland was administered to each concentration, incubated for 18 hours, diluted to 1/10 using NaCl. 100 μLwas taken and planted to blood agar media for 24 hours incubation. The numbers of S.mutans colonies were countedand statistically analysed by one-way anova test and post hoc LSD (p<0.05). The results showed that there weresignificant differences between each treatment, and extract concentration of 25% had better antibacterial activity thanthe others. It was concluded that extract of mauli banana steams have antibacterial activity against S.mutans, andmauli banana stem have the potential to be used as an alternative herbal mouthwash.
