Abstract

Background: Mauli banana is a special plant of South Borneo that can be used as alternatif medicine for wound healing wound healing. Recent studies showed that Mauli banana stem contained some compound such as flavonoid, saponin, and tannin that had antibacterial and antiinflamation effect, and can accelerate the wound healing. Purpose: This study was aimed to know the effect of 25% Mauli banana extract gel to the epithel thickness of wound healing process in oral mucosa. Method: It was the real experimental with post test only control group design. It used 36 Sprague dawley rats that divided into 3 groups: the negative control group by giving aquadest, the positive control group by giving drug contain Aloe vera, and the treatment group by giving 25% ethanol extract of Mauli banana stem. Biopsy was done on day 3, 5, 7 and the preparat was made to measure the thickness of oral mucosa epithel by Image J software. Result: The result showed that 25% ethanol extract of Mauli banana stem can increased the thickness of oral mucosa epithel on third day (51.26 µm), fifth days (108.49 µm), and seventh day (170.66 µm). The top thickness of mucosa epithel was on the seventh day. Two-ways Anova and Post Hoc LSD (p<0.05) showed the significant different between aquadest and 25% ethanol extract of Mauli banana stem. 25% ethanol extract of Mauli banana stem and drug contains Aloe vera are the aqual of meaningfull. Conclusion: 25%ethanol extract of Mauli banana can increase the epithelial thickness of wound healing procces in oral mucosa.

Abstract

Background: North Hulu Sungai Banjarmasin people are using banana stem mauli to accelerate wound healing in the skin. Mauli banana stem extract contains antimicrobial and antioxidant effects. Need the development of traditional plants that can be used as a topical antiseptic drug in the oral cavity. Purpose: to determinethe anti fungal effectivity of methanolextractof 100% mauli banana stem compared with the ethanol extractof 100% mauli banana stem. Methods and materials: pure laboratory experimental research with the completely randomized designusing 3 treatments with 9 replications. Making 100% banana mauli stemextractby maceration method using the solution of ethanol and methanol.The sample wasa pure culture of Candida albicans. Saboroud agar petridish were contained Candida albicans that have given filter paper soaked for 3 hours with100% methanol extract of mauli banana stem, 100% ethanol extract of mauli banana stem, and 0,2% Clorhexidine gluconate. Inhibition zone diameter of three treatments was compared after doing incubation for 1 day. It using the diffusion method. Results: Kruskal Wallis test of the three treatment resulted p value=0.00(p &lt;0.05) that H0 was rejected, so i tcould be concluded that there were significant differences between the three treatments. Mann Whitney test resulted that the treatment of 100% ethanol was compared with100% methanol resulted p = 0.00 (p &lt;0.05).There was a significant difference between the treatmentof 100% ethanoland 100% methanol to the growthness of Candida albicans.Conclusion: The results ofthe studyit appears that the banana stem mauli have antimicrobial activity. Methanol extract of banana stem mauli has a total flavonoids was higher than the ethanol extractof banana stem mauli. This makes methanol extracts had higher antifungal activity than the ethanol extract. Key words : Antifungal, Diffusion method, Ethanol, Extract, Mauli banana stem, Methanol.

Abstract

Background: Oral candidiasis is the most prevalent opportunistic infection affecting the oral mucosa. A number of predisposing factors have the capacity to convert Candida from the normal commensal flora to a pathogenic organism. Oral candidiasis is divided into primary and secondary infection. The primary infections are restricted to the oral and perioral sites, where as secondary infections are accompanied by sistemic mucocutaneous manifestation. Oral thrush is one of the candidiasis primary infection. Some presdiposing factors of oral thrush are neonatal, old people, or where oral microflora is disturbed by the treatment with broad spectrum antibiotics. Final diagnosis is determined by fungal culture examination, although through clinical examination oral thrush can be determined by swabbing the white pseudomembran. Purpose: This case report presents about the importance of using the antiseptic cleanser for baby bottle nipple to prevent oral thrush relaps and shows about peroxide alkaline as the alternatif of antiseptic cleanser for baby bottle nipple that can substitute chlorhexidine gluconat 0.2%. Case: A baby girl, 15 months old, when she was suffering influenza the pediatry gave amoxycillin 125 mg three times a day for ten days. Then the white plaque appeared on her dorsum of tongue. The therapy was Gentian Violet 1% four times a day for ten days was applied on dorsum of the tongue. The patient was suspected to suffer alergy reaction after using nistatin oral suspension four times a day had applied for 1 day. The instruction was doing sterilization for the baby bottle nipple in boiling water. Three days after the baby was cured, the white plaque was appeared on upper n lower lips mucous. Case management: The diagnosis was Oral thrush. The therapy was Gentian violet 1% four times a day for ten days that applied on upper and lower lips mucous. The instruction was doing the sterilization for baby bottle nipple in denture cleanser contain peroxide alkaline for five minutes, then it was washed with antiseptic soap, and soaked it in boiling water. Conclusion: The baby bottle nipple sterilization on the case of Oral thrush can not only by boiling in the water, but it must be keep in the antiseptic solution before boiled in the water. It was for preventing oral thrush relaps.Latar belakang: Kandidiasis rongga mulut merupakan infeksi opurtunistik yang sering terjadi pada mukosa mulut. Banyak faktor predisposisi yang menyebabkan Candida yang awalnya merupakan flora normal dalam rongga mulut berubah menjadi organisme patogen. Kandidiasis rongga mulut dibagi menjadi infeksi primer dan sekunder. Infeksi primer terjadi pada rongga mulut dan sekitarnya, sedangkan infeksi sekunder akan diikuti oleh manifestasi mukokutan secara sistemik. Oral thrush adalah salah satu dari infeksi primer candidasis. Beberapa faktor predisposisinya adalah pada bayi, orang tua atau microflora rongga mulut terganggu karena pemakaian jenis antibiotik spektrum luas. Diagnosis akhir didapatkan dari pemeriksaan kultur jamur, meskipun diagnosis dapat ditegakkan dengan pemeriksaan klinis melalui hapusan lesi pesudomembran putih. Tujuan: Laporan kasus ini tentang pentingnya penggunaan antiseptik untuk sterilisasi dot botol bayi untuk mencegah kekambuhan oral thrush dan menunjukkan alkalin peroxida sebagai alternatif bahan antiseptik untuk sterilisasi dot botol bayi, yang mampu mengganti Klorheksidin glukonat 0,2%. Kasus: Pasien adalah bayi perempuan usia 15 bulan, selama sakit batuk pilek mendapat obat dari dokter spesialis anak amoxycillin 125 mg yang diberikan 3 kali sehari selama 10 hari. Selanjutnya tampak plak putih pada lidah. Terapi yang diberikan adalah Gentian Violet 1% yang oleskan 4 kali sehari selama 10 hari pada dorsum lidah. Hal ini disebabkan pasien diduga mengalami alergi setelah diberi nistatin suspensi 4 kali sehari. Instruksi yang dianjurkan adalah menyeteril dot botol bayi dalam rebusan air. Setelah sembuh, 3 hari kemudian muncul lagi plak putih pada mukosa bibir atas dan bawahnya. Tatalaksana kasus: Pasien didiagnosis menderita oral thrush. Terapi yang diberikan adalah Gentian Violet 1% diaplikasikan 4 x 1 selama 10 hari pada mukosa bibir atas dan bawah. Instruksi yang diberikan adalah untuk menyeteril dot botol bayi dengan pembersih gigi tiruan yang mengandung alkalin peroksida selama 5 menit, kemudian dicuci dengan sabun mandi antiseptik, dan direbus dalam air. Simpulan: Sterilisasi pada bottle nipple pada pasien anak dengan oral thrush tidak dapat dilakukan dengan hanya merebus dalam air saja, melainkan harus merendam dengan cairan antiseptik terlebih dahulu sebelum direbus dalam air. Hal ini untuk mencegah terjadinya kekambuhan pada Oral thrush.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Traumatic ulcer is one of oral disorders that often occur. The prevalence is quite high, between 3-24% of population. Therapy of traumatic ulcer is symptomatic. People usually use Aloe vera extract gel. Previous research showed that the Aloe vera gel is equivalent with ethanol extract of 25% Mauli banana (Musa acuminata) stem in accelerating wound healing based on the number of macrophages and neovascular. The objective of the study is to find out the time difference of traumatic ulcer healing using 25% Musa acuminata stem extract gel compared to a gel containing Aloe vera extract. Methods: The research was post test design. Subjects were patients of Oral Medicine Installation in Gusti Hasan Aman Dental Hospital Banjarmasin with diagnosis of traumatic ulcer using completely random sampling method. Eight patients as samples were determined by the formula of Lemeshow. Results: there was no significant difference with p=0,724 (p>0,05) between healing time using Aloe vera gel and 25% Musa acuminata stem extract. Conclusion: At the concentration of 25% Musa acuminata stem extract gel concentration has the same healing time with Aloe vera gel, therefore can be recommended as a topical use for traumatic ulcer healing.Keywords: Musa acuminata stem, Healing time, Traumatic ulcer

Abstract

Musa sp. is one of Kalimantan Selatan original plant that empirically has benefit as herbal medicine for acceleration of wound healing. Banana contain many phytochemicals such us saponin, flavonoid, and tannin which can be used asantibiotic, pain relieving and anti inflamantory. This experiment was aimed to know the toxicity effect of methanolicextract of mauli banana stem inmice livers histopathological. The research is pure experimental study using post testonly with control design. Populations were 25 mices, divided into 5 groups. Group I as negative control group weregiven aquadest, and group II, III, IV, and V were given 125 mg, 250 mg, 500 mg, and 1000 mg methanolic extract ofMauli banana stem. They were given treatment daily as long as 21 days. All of the mice were necropsied at day 22, andthe livers were taken for to examine their histopatological changes. Each liver tissue was processed by paraffin blockembededdand hematoxylin eosin staining method. Histopathological changes were examined based on the present necrosis, degeneration, and megalohepathosit lesions. The results showed light necrosis, degeneration, andmegalohepathosit on the treatment group. The conclusion was methanolic extract of Mauli banana stem dosage 1251000mg/kgbwis not toxic significantly on the liver of mice.

Abstract

Chronic atrophic candidiasis is the pathologic changes on the oral mucous of thedenture wearers, accompanied with erythematous under the denture, usuallyasymptomatic and relates to the yeast of Candida. The irritation factors of chronicatrophic candidiasis are ill fitting denture, using the denture at night and bad oralhygiene. This is a case report of chronic atrophic candidiasis on patient usingremovable denture without systemic disease. The trigger factors were using denture atnight, mistaken of cleaning the denture and dental calculus surround the artificialteeth of denture. Final diagnosis is based on anamnesis, clinical examination andmicrobiology examination. Therapy given was a topical antifungal appliedcontinuously for 7 days after the clinical signs dissapear. The patient was suggested tonot using the denture at night, maintain the cleanliness of the denture regularly andscaling the teeth. It can be concluded that management of chronic atrophiccandidiasis is based on the oral lesion condition, oral hygiene, wearing denture atnight, and the systemic condition.

Abstract

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the common lesion in oral cavity. The etiologyof RAS remains unclear. The trigger factors are genetic, traumatic, abnormalimmunology, digestive diseases, hormonal disturbance, HIV, stress, infection andnutrition deficiency. This is a case report of a patient with minor, multiple, pain, whitecolor ulcer with erythema halo on lips palatum and tongue mucous. One day beforethe ulcers erupted, prodromal symptoms had occurred such as subfebris, malaise, anddizziness. The patient was 19-year-old, male, undergraduate student and with historyof ulceration every month. The clinical diagnosis was primary herpeticgingivostomatitis. The differential diagnosis was RAS. The complete blood count(CBC) result indicated that the patient suffered anemia. He was provided withbenzydamin HCl gargle and oral supplement contain ferrous, vitamins, and minerals.It can be concluded that anemia can be a trigger factor of RAS. Therefore, it isimportant for the dentist to know the clinical signs and manifestations of anemia inoral cavity in order to provide an appropriate treatment.

Abstract

Banana plant especially its trunk contains many kinds of fitokimia such as saponin, flavonoid, and tannin whichfunction as antibiotic and fasten the healing process. Mauli banana stem extract is often used by the people in HuluSungai Utara Banjarmasin Province to fasten healing skin injury. The purpose of this research is to histopathologicallyexamine the effectiveness of Mauli Banana stem extract to the healing process of the mice’s back (Mus musculus)onthe 3rd day. This purely true experimental research with post test only with control design used 27 mices which weredivided to 3 groups. Treatment group was given methanol extract of mauli banana stem whose average scores ofneutrofil and macrofag are representatively 2.333 and 1; negative control group was given aquadest with its averageneutrofil and macrofag scores are representatively 1.055 dan 1.678; and positive control group was given standardmedicine which contained Aloe veraextract with its average neutrofil and macrofag scores are representatively 1.066dan 1.667. The result of Kruskall-Wallis and Mann-Whiney showed a significant difference between treatment groupand negative control group. It can be concluded that the extract methanol of mauli banana stem on the healing processof injury to mancit’s back histopathologically influences the decreasing acute inflamed (neutrofil) cell and theincreasing chronic inflamed (macrophage) cell on the third day. In this case the extract of mauli banana stem ismedically potential to fasten the healing process of injury.

Abstract

There are many traditional medicines that can be used as alternative medicine. One of them is methanol extract ofmauli banana stems. Some people in North of Hulu Sungai Banjarmasin use it as healing agent. The aim of thisresearch was to test antibacterial activity of mauli banana stems extract against Streptococcus mutans; as well as todetermine the effective concentration of its antibacterial activity against S.mutans. The extraction was conducted bymaceration method. Viscous extracts were diluted by using 10% dimethyl sulfoxide and filtered with Whatman paperfilter. Those extracts were divided into four treatment groups: 6.25% (I), 12.5% (II), 25% (III), and control (-)(IV).Groups I, II, and III were added with Muller Hinton media to reach the concentrations. 100 μL S.mutans suspension of0.5 Mc Farland was administered to each concentration, incubated for 18 hours, diluted to 1/10 using NaCl. 100 μLwas taken and planted to blood agar media for 24 hours incubation. The numbers of S.mutans colonies were countedand statistically analysed by one-way anova test and post hoc LSD (p&lt;0.05). The results showed that there weresignificant differences between each treatment, and extract concentration of 25% had better antibacterial activity thanthe others. It was concluded that extract of mauli banana steams have antibacterial activity against S.mutans, andmauli banana stem have the potential to be used as an alternative herbal mouthwash.
