Abstract

Sandfish (Holothuria scabra) has long been exploited as an important marine species resources due to higheconomic value, and it has been also a potential species for aquaculture. Survival in larval settlement stage isone of the most important factor in sea cucumber culture. For better larval development, the settlement substratesare necessary. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of various seagrass and macroalgae as the settlementsubstrates on the survival of H. scabra larvae. The experiment trial was conducted in UPT LPBIL LIPI Mataramusing completely randomized design with five replicates for each substrate treatment. The settlement substratesused were Ulva sp. (P1), Gracilaria gigas (P2), Enhalus acoroides (P3), and Eucheuma cottoni (P4). Substratearea was 14x19 cm2 in each treatment. At the beginning of experiment trial, one thousand larvae were distributedinto plastic tank containing 10 L seawater for each tank. After 13 days experiment period, the survival of H.scabra larvae showed significantly different among substrates treatment. The highest survival was achieved byE. acoroides (15.53±2.23%), and followed by Ulva sp. (5.07±0.74%), E. cottoni (2.57±0.25%), and G. gigas(1.96±0.17%).Keyword: substrate, seagrass, macroalgae, survival, Holothuria scabra  Abstrak Teripang pasir (Holothuria scabra) termasuk ke dalam golongan biota yang terancam punah, dan bernilai tinggiyang belum banyak dibudidayakan. Salah satu faktor yang mempengaruhi tingkat keberhasilan budidaya teripangpasir adalah kelangsungan hidup pada fase penempelan. Pada fase tersebut larva H. scabra memerlukan substratsebagai tempat hidup. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi pengaruh jenis substrat lamun dan makroalgayang berbeda terhadap tingkat kelangsungan hidup (TKH) larva teripang pasir pada fase penempelan. Penelitiandilaksanakan di Laboratorium Budidaya UPT LPBIL LIPI Mataram menggunakan metode eksperimental rancanganacak lengkap dengan lima ulangan. Perlakuan jenis substrat, yaitu: Ulva sp. (P1), Gracilaria gigas (P2), Enhalusacoroides (P3), dan Eucheuma cottonii (P4). Substrat dirangkai dengan luasan yang sama sebesar 14x19 cm2.Wadah pemeliharaan berupa wadah plastik dengan volume air laut 10 L, kepadatan awal 1.000 individu/wadah.Perhitungan akhir TKH dilakukan pada hari ke-13 masa pemeliharaan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jenissubstrat yang berbeda memberikan pengaruh yang berbeda nyata terhadap TKH larva teripang pasir. SubstratE. acoroides memberikan kelangsungan hidup tertinggi sebesar 15,53±2,23%. Abstract

ABSTRACT Sandfish (Holothuria scabra) is one of endangered species, which has high economical value but has not been commonly cultivated. One factor that affects the success of sandfish culture is survival of larvae during attachment phase . In this phase the larvae of H. scabra need a substrate as a place to live. This study investigated the effect of seagrass and macroalgae as the settlement substrates on the survival of H. scabra larvae. Abstract

Techniques for producing Holothuria scabra or sandfish sea cucumbers from aquaculture have been developed rapidly in the recent years to address the issues of decreasing sandfish population and increasing market demand. During the process of culturing H. scabra, the early stages of sandfish (i.e. larvae and juveniles) are the most critical of the development. Therefore, the Research and Development Division of the Marine Bio Industry – LIPI conducted a study to assess the growth performance of juvenile H. scabra  ultured in four different rearing conditions: (i) indoor concrete tank, (ii) indoor fiberglass tank, (iii) outdoor concrete tank with 1 mm hapa mesh, and (iv) outdoor concrete tank with 3 mm hapa mesh. Each of the rearing condition was set with an initial juvenile density of 15 juveniles per tank with a mean initial weight of 14 g, and fed ad libitum with a mixed feed consisting of Enhalus acoroides sea grass, Pennisetum purpureum napier and cow manure. The experiments were conducted for 20 weeks between April 26 - September 23, 2013. After the experimental period, juveniles reared in the outdoor concrete tank with 1 mm mesh show the best performance with respect to their survival rate (48.89 ± 3.85 %),mean final weight (22.07 ± 1.01 g), final biomass (162.05 ± 18.17 g) and specific growth rate (0.15 ± 0.03% per day). Further studies that combine rearing conditions with different bottom substrates as well as investigating the effect of light are needed to optimize the production of H. scabra from aquaculture.

Abstract

Holothuria scabra is a commercial tropical sea cucumber species, which has been exploited severely in recent years. This study was conducted at the Mataram Marine Bio Industry Technical Implementation Unit for 20 days aiming to determine the relationship between wet and dry weight of sea cucumbers with and without colon. Results of regression analysis between wet and dry weight show a significant positive correlation. The relationship between wet and dry weight without the colon is y = 0.1685x – 0.2319 (R2 = 0.9236) whereas the wet and dry wet of the intestine is y = 0.075x + 0033 (R2 = 0.791).

Abstract

Sea cucumbers belonged to the species of Holothuria atra are one of the holothurians that could reproduce asexually through fission particularly when their ambient environments are not optimum to reproduce sexually. The reproductive pattern of H. atra has been shown to correlate with to the condition of H. atra population as well as their habitats and environments. This study aims to investigate the asexual reproduction and fission rate of H. atra in Tanjung, North Lombok, Indonesia. We conducted surveys in February, May, July, August, September and December 2016 by applying the free collection method. A total of 1,383 individual H. atra were collected consisting of 931 intact or normal individuals, 174 anterior individuals, 261 posterior individuals and 17 uncategorized individuals. Fissioned H. atra were found in every sampling conducted in the six different months with fission rates range from 5.53 to 30.40%. This research shows that the population of H. atra in Tanjung, North Lombok, are susceptible to asexual reproduction (fission). Fission rate value of > 5% is associated with an adaptation mechanism of H. atra to maintain their population in the wild. Further investigation on the environmental conditions stimulating H. atra fission is needed to understand the reproduction and population dynamic of this species in Tanjung waters.
