Abstract

The objectives of this study are to estimate the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) and to map potential pelagic fishing grounds in Selayar Waters. Firstly, the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) was estimated using Surplus Production Model and then calculated the TAC for both skipjack and scads. To generate this model, this study used 10 years time series (1995-2004) which consisted of catch and fishing effort data. Second, satellite images of sea surface temperature derived from MODIS were used to map out potential predicted area for each species based on their preferred sea surface temperature ranges for the period of June-September 2006.  Results showed that the exploitation rates for skipjack and scads were 15.39% and 49.7% of the TAC, respectively. The Potential fishing grounds for the species well formed in June, and mostly occurred near Selayar main Island and Takaborate coastal waters. These results were highly consistent with the empirical data.  As a result, the pelagic resources should be optimally exploited at the TAC level by utilizing potential predicted area defined by preferred sea surface temperature. These findings suggested that the potential fishing ground map could be easily produced by satellite imagery and should be important information to the fishermen. Abstract

To simulate migration pattern of albacore tuna in the western North Pacific Ocean during the winter period, a kinesis model driven by high accuracy of sea surface temperature (SST) maps was used. The SST data were derived from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission/TRMM Microwave Imager (TRMM/TMI). Simulations showed that albacore tuna aggregated in areas of thermal preference indicated by contour line of 20°C SST. Results are compared with empirical observation maps of albacore tuna fishing locations determined from longline fishing operation during the same time periods. Albacore tuna distributions along thermal fronts generating from Simulations were fairly consistent with fishing data especially during November-January, although seasonal variations in surface temperature ranges occupied suggest that additional oceanographic factors are involved particularly during February-March. Simulations and empirical data had similar temperature distributions at approximately 18-21°C and one-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test reinforced the result performance. These results suggest that kinesis model driven by satellite microwave remote sensing is one of effective mechanisms for describing migration pattern of tuna in the open ocean environment. Abstract

Skipjack tuna is an important species targeting by pole and line fishery in Bone Bay. The distribution and abundance of this species tended to aggregate to the preferred bio-physical environments. To describe the short term relationship between skipjack tuna and oceanographic conditions and to visualize the predicted high catch areas, remotely sensed satellite based-oceanographic sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a together fisheries data were used. Results indicated that the highest skipjack CPUEs were mainly found in coastal areas of Palopo and Kolaka both in 2007 and in 2009 during the period of study. The high tuna concentrations corresponded well with chlorophyll-a of 0.15-0.40 mg mg-3 and SST of 29.0-31.5 °C. The preferred ranges provide a good indicator for initially detecting potential skipjack fishing grounds. This study suggested that thermal and chlorophyll fronts as well as upwelling may important mechanisms in explaining the temporal and spatial dynamics of skipjack tuna distribution and abundance in Bone Bay.Keywords: skipjack tuna, potential fishing grounds, satellite images and fronts

Abstract

The main problem facing by fishermen for capturing skipjack tuna is limited information of potential skipjack fishing areas such as the frontal locations. The purpose of this study was to analyze the spatial and temporal skipjack tuna distributions and thermal fronts, and to determine the effect of climate change on their distribution and abundance during transitional seasons. We used a survey method, in which catch and fishing position data were collected by following pole and line fishing operations. This study also collected secondary data that consisted of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and chlorophyll-a derived from Aqua / MODIS. Fronts were determined by calculating SST gradient, SSTs preferences, chlorophyll-a, bathymetry and distance from coastline, whereas SST anomaly was calculated from the difference between monthly SST and mean SST. We mapped satellite and field data using ArcGIS 10.0. The results showed that the highest catch of skipjack tuna with an average of 205 fish/set were found inOctober 2013, which occurred in the areas of 4 o40S-5o10S and 120o40E-121oE. The locations had a temperature gradient of 0.4oC and chlorophyll-a density from 0,15 to 0,23 mg m-3. Potential fishing areas may associate with negative SST anomalies of -2.1373 - -0.6469oC, reflecting that skipjack tuna tend to be at thermal fronts with relatively lower SST compared with an average of seven years.

Abstract

Abstract

Large pelagic species such as tuna are known to be abundant in Mamuju Waters,  Makassar Strait.  The distribution and abundance of the fish in that area are expected to be  related to the distributions of sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration. This study aims to predict spatial and temporal distribution of the species during the period of June 2013-May 2014.  Probability indices used for detection of tuna potential fishing zones (PFZs) were constructed from a model of satellite-based SST and chlorophyll data in relation to tuna fishery. Results showed that the occurrence of tuna species in Mamuju Water were mostly predicted in areas of 118°12’-118°48’ E 1°48’ – 2°30’S with the total area of approximately 7,495 km2.   The potential fishing zones were mainly found in August.  It was likely that tuna potential fishing zones associated with the preferred oceanographic factors throughout the study area.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to characterize potential fishing ground for the skipjack tuna using the oceanographic conditions of sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentrations and catch data, and to describe the level of primary productivity around the skipjack fishing grounds in the Bone Bay. This study used a survey method by collecting primary tuna catch and MODIS satellite image data. The data were analyzed using Empirical Cumulative Distribution Function (ECDF). The model outputs were visualized using ArcGIS spatial analyst.  The results showed that the potential skipjack tuna fishing grounds during the west monsoon ( December -February ) were well characterized  by  the environmental conditions of SST and chlorophyll- a concentration ranged from 29.9 to 31.0 °C and from 0.12 to 0.22 mg m3, respectively. The highest catches for skipjack were found in February in the specific areas of 120°E121°E and 3°S-4°S where the levels of primary production ranged from 5.30 to 11.62 g C/m/ month during the west monsoon.

Abstract

The distribution of anchovies (Stelophorus spp) in the Spermonde coastal waters, Pangkep, was studied from satellite remotely sensed environment and catch data, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Generalized Additive Model (GAM). The goal of this preliminary study was to investigate the relationship between sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface chlorophyll-a concentration (SSC), and anchovies distribution. To describe their relationship, SST and SSC derived from Aqua/MODIS satellite were overlain with the positions of experimental fishing by local fishermen’s lift net (“Bagan perahu”). The experimental lift net operations were conducted in April to May 2008. The findings of this study showed that most of the anchovies distribution occurred in the coastal area. Anchovies distribution tended to be highest in the specific temperature of 28.8 - 29.3C and chlorophyll-a of 1.5 ‒2.5 mg.m . Furthermore, the SST and SSC in the coastal waters of Spermonde play a great role in determining the variability of the anchovies quantitative distribution in the study area. The results were supported by GAM prediction.  Due to lack of robust data, there is no detailed information on the optimum habitat preference of anchovies. Future work is needed to reveal the preferred habitat of anchovies with the consideration of more oceanographic parameters.
