Abstract

The purpose of this experiment was to examine the effects of mulberry leave meal to substitute concentrate in rice straw based ration on blood profiles of Ongole crossbreed cattle. This experiment was carried out according to completely randomized design consisted of 3 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments were P1 (50% rice straw + 50% concentrate), P2 (50% rice straw + 25% concentrate + 25% mulberry leave meal), and P3 (50% rice straw + 50% mulberry leave meal). Parameters measured were blood profiles, i.e. blood glucose, blood cholesterol and blood HDL. The results showed that substitution of concentrate with mulberry leave meal significantly reduced (P<0.05) blood glucose and increased blood cholesterol and HDL. It is concluded that mulberry leave meal can be used to substitute concentrate and give a positive effect on glucose, cholesterol,and HDL contents of blood.   Key words: Mulberry leaves, Blood profiles, Beef cattle

Abstract

Compound of 1- deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) in the mulberry leave extract (MLE) potentially hamper the hydrolysis process of various carbohydrates. This experiment aimed to study dynamic concentration of reductive sugar resulted from the hydrolysis of various carbohydrates by raw enzymes of the rumen liquid, with or without the addition of mulberry leave extract containing 1-deoxynojirimycin. Materials tested are maltose, sucrose, starch and cellulose.  The result of the experiment showed that the addition of mulberry leave extract on the media with the substrate of maltose hampered the activity of maltase.  It was concluded that MLE containing DNJ can be used as an agent of slow release mechanism of non-structural carbohydrates, especially maltose, in the rumen system. Abstract

The experiment was designed to evaluate the silage quality of sorghum forage varieties of Citayam and BMR 3.6 strain at different harvesting times and the effectiveness of a legumes addition as a concentrate substitute in sorghum forage silage-based diets on in vitro fermentability using rumen fluid of beef cattle. Experimental design for silage quality was completely randomized design with 2 x 3 factorial, i.e., forage sorghum types (Citayam and BMR 3.6) and time of harvesting the forage sorghum (85, 95, and 105 d). Experimental design for in vitro fermentability and digestibility was randomized block design with 2 x 2 factorial arrangement, i.e. types of ration (with 2 levels i.e., a mixture of legumes and concentrate) and types of sorghum forage silages (with 2 levels i.e., Citayam and BMR 3.6). All silages had a good odor, color, and texture. Silage of sorghum harvested at 105 d had better grades and was selected for in vitro studies. The treatment had no effect on pH and organic matter digestibility. BMR 3.6 based silage had greater values of NH3, total VFA, rumen microbial population, methane, and dry matter digestibility. Substitution of concentrate with a mixture of legumes did not affect fermentability, microbe population and digestibility in the rumen. Silage of sorghum strain BMR 3.6 harvested at 105 d had a very good quality and mixing with legumes could replace concentrate in forage sorghum silage based diet on in vitro fermentability and digestibility using beef cattle rumen fluid.

Abstract

The PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acid)-concentrates containing fatty acid sources (roasted corn grain,roasted soy bean meal, and corn oil) was designated as PUFA- concentrate for dairy goat. There werefour PUFA-concentrates, no supplement (PC0), 0.5% or 5 g yeast (PCY), 2% or 20 g curcuma powder(PCC), and 0.5% or 5g yeast with 2% or 20g curcuma powder (PCM). These PUFA-concentrates wereevaluated for nutrients and fatty acid contents during 2, 4, and 6 weeks of storage. The application oftreatments utilized in this research was completely randomized design with repeated measurement andsplit plot statistical analysis. Results showed that the contents of dry matter, organic matter, ether extract,crude protein, N-free extract, gross energy, acid detergent fiber, Ca, P, and Saccharomyces cereviseaewere significantly (P<0.05) remained stable as caused by unchained moisture of PUFA-concentrate withcombined supplements (Y5C20) in the 6 weeks of storage. The total PUFA (P), P/S, monounsaturatedfatty acid (MUFA), and long chained fatty acid contents tended to be high in PUFA-concentrate with 2%or 20 g curcuma powder. Whereas, the PUFA-concentrate with a combination of 0.5% or 5 g yeast and2% or 20 g curcuma powder was higher in unsaturated (U) fat and the ratio of U/S. In conclusion, combining all nutrient performances during the storage of 2 to 6 weeks, the PUFA-concentrate with0.5% or 5 g yeast and 2% or 20 g curcuma powder was considered nutritionally good.

Abstract

The experiment  aimed to evaluate the production of nutrients  by different varieties of sorghum grown with high valuable indigofera legume  in intercropping system and to determine the suitable variety of sorghum that produced the highest nutrient in the system. The experiment was done at Jonggol Animal Science Teaching and Research Unit (UP3J) Jonggol, from November 2014 to March 2015. This experiment was conducted using completely randomized design with 2 factors (3 x 4) and 4 replications. The first factor was sorghum varieties (PATIR 3.2 (S1), PATIR 3.7 (S2), and CTY-33 (S3)). The second factor was indigofera composition (0% indigofera (I0), 30% indigofera (I1), 40% indigofera (I2), and 50% indigofera (I3)). Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and HSD test. There was no interaction among varieties of sorghum and indigofera composition. Indigofera population of up to 50%  in multiple cropping system had the highest (P&lt;0.01) dry matter content, crude protein content, ash content, total fresh weight production, total dry weight production, total crude protein production, total ash production, and carrying capacity. Sorghum variety CTY-33 planted in multiple cropping system had  the highest (P&lt;0.01) dry matter content, total dry weight production, and (P&lt;0.05) total crude protein production. PATIR 37 sorghum variety planted in multiple cropping system had  the highest (P&lt;0.05) ash content and (P&lt;0.01) total ash production.  It is concluded that Indigofera population of up to 50% planted with different varieties of sorghum in multiple cropping system had  the highest nutrient production.

Abstract

Cholesterol is very beneficial for the body but it needs attention when its level is increasing in the blood. The objective of the study was to determine cholesterol level and growth rate of white rat fed on ration containing sago waste, shrimp waste and their combinations. Fourty males Spraque dowley rats, aged two months with average body weight was 195.62 g, were randomly assigned to one of ten experimental treatments according to completely randomised design with four replication for each treatment. The treatments were  R0 (control diet), ASA 20 LU 0 (20% sago waste  and 0% shrimp waste),  ASA 0 LU 10 (0% sago waste and 10% shrimp waste), ASA 17.5 LU 2.5 (17.5% sago waste and 2.5% shrimp waste), ASA 15 LU 5 % (15% sago waste  and 5% shrimp waste), ASA 12.5 LU 7.5  (12.5% sago waste  and 7.5% shrimp waste),  ASA 10 LU 10 (10% sago waste  and 10% shrimp waste), ASA 7.5 LU 12.5  (7.5% sago waste and 12.5% shrimp waste), ASA 5 LU 15  (5% sago waste and 15% shrimp waste %), ASA 2.5 LU 17.5 (2.5% sago waste  and 17.5% shrimp waste).Variables measured included feed intake,  live weight gain, plasma cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglyceride and meat cholesterol. The results showed that treatments had no (P>0.05) effects on feed intake, live weight gain, feed efficiency, plasma HDL and LDL as well as meat cholesterol. However significant differences (P<0.01) were found on plasma cholesterol and plasma triglyceride due to treatment. The lowest levels of plasma cholesterol and plasma triglyceride were observed for treatment ASA 15 LU which were 45.95 mg/dl and 43.81 mg/dl,crespectively. It can be concluded that levels of sago waste, shrimp waste and the combinations in the ration do not affect feed intake, weight gain, feed efficiency, plasma HDL, plasma LDL and meat cholesterol but it affected plasma triglycerides and plasma cholesterol of rat.
