Anti-Inflammatory Activity of The Extract of Guava Leaves (Psidium guajava L) in The Rat (Rattus norvegicus L)

Abstract

Using of natural sources that have anti-inflammatory activity for the prevention and treatment of degenerative diseases began to be further explored. An investigation on the anti-inflammatory activity of the aqueous extract of guava leaves (Psidium guajava L.) from Sawangan, Depok on white male rats of Sprague-Dawley strain had been carried out on the carrageenan-induced  paw  edema  method.    To  examine  the  effect  of  guava  extract  on subcutan at different doses of 125, 250 and 500 mg/kg of body weight (BW).  Indometacine at dose of 10 mg/kg BW was used as a positive control. Observations were made during five hours with an interval of one hour. These results demonstrate that the percentage of inflammation or edema (% E) optimal at the 4th hour and then decreased at the 5th hour, while the percentage of optimal inhibition occurred at the 5th hour. Guava extract at 125, 250 and 500 mg/kg BW reduced inhibitory percentage activities by 40.81, 55.45 and 43.61% (p<  0.05)  respectively.  In  conclusion,  this  study  suggests  that  guava  extract  has  anti-inflammatory properties by decreasing edema level.

Abstract

Optimum concentration of seed starch of jackfruit as external lubricant in tabletting process was studied. The background of this research is that jackfruit seed contains about 36,7% starch and it can  be  used  as  lubricant  in  tabletting  process.  Research  objective  was  to  obtain  the  optimum concentration  of  seed  starch  as  external  lubricant.  The  simple  granule  of  the  formulation  was divided into 6 parts, each part of granule was added by seed starch as external lubricant of 2, 3, 4,  5,  6,  and  10%  in  succession.  The  granules  physical  properties  were  evaluated  for  their  flow ability,  and  then  made  into  tablet  dosage  form,  with  the  same  position  of  tablet  machine.  The tablets  then  were  evaluated  for  their  weight  uniformity,  hardness,  friability,  disintegration  time and  physical  property.  The  result  showed  that  5% of jackfruit seed starch as lubricant gave the fastest flow time and its weight uniformity was good. These tablets also fulfill the requirement of Indonesian Pharmacopoeia criteria and other standard literatures for good quality of tablets. It could  be  concluded  that  the  optimum  concentration  of  jackfruit  seed  starch  as  lubricant  in tabletting process was 5%.

Abstract

Empirically  kombuca  tea  could  be  used  as  stimulant,  but  scientifically  it  should  be  proven.  To know  whether  kombuca  tea  has  stimulant  effect  or  not,  this  research  had  been  conducted.  An amount  of  25  rats  were  divided  into  5  groups,  the  first  group  was  given  aquadest  as  negative control {K (-)}, and second group was given Bio-ATP tablet as positive control {K (+)}. The third experiment group was given 1 ml of 11 days incubated kombuca tea (E1). The fourth experiment group  was  given  1  ml  of  14  days  incubated  kombuca  tea  (E2).  The  fifth  experiment  group  was given 1 ml of 17 days incubated kombuca tea (E3). The result showed that E1 gave better effect than E2 and E3, and E2 better than E3 in overcoming fatigue.

Abstract

Hypertension is a silent killer disease with risk factor of cardiovascular disease. Uncontrolled blood pressure causes disability and death prematurely. The treatment principle is modification of lifestyle and antihypertensive agents to bring the blood pressure to as near the normotensive range as possible. Mahkota dewa [Phaleria macrocarpa (Scheff.) Boerl] is an indigenous plant from Papua. This plant is famous in Indonesia, empirically widely used to treat many diseases, such as for antihypertension. Such a claim has to be scientifically proven using animal testing. In this study, mahkota dewa fruit semi solid extract was orally given to tested animal (Sprague Dawley strain male white rat) with variable dosages. The animal was induced  hypertension by 2 % sodium chloride solution as the drinking water for 4 weeks. Mahkota Dewa (MD) extract was given by three variable dosages, 7,5%; 10%; 12,5% per 100 g body weight (BW) once a day for 7 days. Ramipril 0,09 mg/ 200 g BW was used as a positive control. Three dosages of MD reduced high blood pressure significantly, but the dosages 10% and 12,5% were close to normotensive control. Ramipril produced hypotensive signifanctly.

Abstract

Coronary heart disease is already known as the most common form of disease affecting the heart and an important cause of premature death in Indonesia and all over the world. Coronary heart disease has no clear etiology, but does have risk factors, which include smoking, hypertension, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia. Asam Kandis (Garcinia dioica, Blume) is known as a plant that may reduce the high cholesterol level in human. In this animal experimental study, the ethanol extract of Asam Kandis was given to male white rats that induced by propylthiouracil and compared with standard treatment of rosuvastatin. The result shown that the ethanol 96% extract of Asam Kandis with dosage of 50%, 75% and 100% were effective in reducing total cholesterol respectively.
