Biochemical Markers in Stroke

Abstract

Stroke is a clinical syndrome marked by sudden partial or total neurologic deficit, due to impaired brain vessels. Stroke is a potentially fatal neurologic emergency with abrupt onset. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is very crucial for a successful management of patients with stroke. Thrombolytic therapy has been proven to improve the outcome in patients with ischemic stroke if administered within 6 hours after onset and after the possibility of intracranial hemorrhage has been eliminated. Recently, some biochemical markers for brain ischemia has been developed, which is expected to be readily available kits for rapid diagnosis of stroke. The markers for the early diagnosis of stroke include GFAP, PARK7, NDKA, NSE, and FABP. GFAP is a specific marker for brain and can be used to distinguish between ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Protein S-100B can also be useful as early marker for stroke if used in conjunction with other markers. Biochemical markers can also predict the extent of lesion and outcome. Until now, there is no apparent single biochemical marker which can fulfil the criteria of ideal marker for the diagnosis of stroke. Biochemical markers for stroke are more useful if used together in a panel.Keywords: stroke, biochemical markers, GFAP, S-100B

Efectivity Test of Antiseptic Solution 1% Triclosan Against Staphylococcum aureus, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Abstract

Washing hands using antiseptic solution is an important step in preventing the spread of infection in healthcare facilities. Triclosan is one of the widely used antiseptics because of its effectivity against a wide range of Gram positive and negative bacteria. It is also well tolerated by the skin and hardly induced allergic reaction. In this study we assessed the in vitro effectivity of 1% triclosan hand wash solution from BSN Medical Indonesia against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Triclosan solution was mixed with several concentration of bacteria and inoculated in Muller Hinton agar. After 24 hours incubation, the growth of these bacteria on agar were assessed. Triclosan 1% is effective against S. aureus, E. faecalis, dan E. coli, but it is not effective against P.aeruginosa. Triclosan use in hygienic hand wash and surgical hand wash must be reconsidered, because P. aeruginosa is one of main etiology of nosocomial infections. Besides, triclosan has a potency of inducing antibiotic resistance and its residue can contaminate the environment by producing toxic substances and spreading resistance to environmental bacteria.Keywords: Antiseptic, in vitro effectiveness, pathogenic bacteria

The first report of myeloma with IgD κ and free κ in Indonesia

Abstract

IgD κ myeloma is a rare plasma cell neoplasm case and has never been reported before in Indonesia. In normal condition, IgD level in blood is very low, therefore increase of IgD level in myeloma could be missed by serum protein electrophoresis. A case of a 59 years old female with severe bone pain is reported. In radiology evaluation, there were thoracal compression fracture and thoracal foramen narrowing. For this patient, the myeloma diagnosis was based on WHO criteria, the stage IIIb was based on Durie and Salmon criteria, and bad prognosis with prognostic index stage III diagnosis was based on International Prognostic Index from International Myeloma Working Group, respectively. In serum protein electrophoresis we found a very small monoclonal spike and in immunofi xation there were monoclonal IgD κ and free light chain κ. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat peningkatan kemampuan menulis siswa dengan menggunakan Dictogloss Technique. Tes menulis digunakan sebagai alat pengumpul data dan dilakukan dua kali, yakni sebelum dan sesudah perlakuan. Penelitian ini melibatkan tiga puluh tiga siswa IPS 2 SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Bandar Lampung dengan menggunakan metode kuantitatif mengunakan desain eksperimental quisy. Data terkumpul dianalisa menggunakan SPSS v. 20 dan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan secara signifikan kemampuan menulis siswa sebelum dan sesudah menggunakan teknik tersebut dengan tingkat signifikansi (p = 0,000 < 0,05). Maka, disimpulkan bahwa Dictogloss Technique dapat diterapkan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa pada materi teks hortatory eksposisi.The aim of the study was to find out whether there was an improvement of students writing ability after the students were taught through Dictogloss Technique.
