Abstract

This article attempts to analyse one of Jean Racine’s famous works entitled Phèdre using the feminist post-structuralist approach, which differs from earlier analysis of his dramas by others. As a classical work, Phèdre has frequently been analysed by many scholars using the structuralist approach, thus specifically concentrating on binary opposition synthesis. As a result, the dichotomous understanding of Phèdre has been produced, and in many instances shows the stereotypical effect of women in many aspects of their lives. In this analysis of Phèdre, the feminist post structuralist approach deconstructs that understanding and revealed that power relation is one of the important perspectives that can be used in illuminating meaning within the text.

Abstract

This paper aims at exploring the use of sexism in French language, which occurs frequently since the French Revolution in 1789. This sexism is historically and politically constructed by the society and espoused by different social actors, such as philosophers, politicians, religious leaders and others. The various forms of this sexism range from the level of syntax to semantics and place women in different categories. The overall analysis reveals that the women’s representations are underestimated, stigmatized and considered inferior vis à vis men’s representations.

Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyse the various discourse of French Ministry of Foreign Affairs augmented on its ideology of promoting pluralism in the country, which is strategically marketed through the Ministry’s magazine entitled Label. The social actors representing the ideology of the Ministry raise arguements advancing pluralism as an ideal part of France foreign policy. The discourses evolving from these actors arguments however, emphasized the dicotomic perspective of French centrality towards the others (the Southern countries) as pheriphery. The perspective of pluralism politics and the relationship between central and periphery are the focus of this article. In order to understand the underlying meaning of the arguments, Critical Discourse Analysis is used to illuminate the discourses of these actors. The analysis revealed that the ideal of pluralism although viewed as a good way in trying to position other countries as in oneness as a coherent group is in fact contradictory because it creates a gap or distinction between France considered as central and other countries as in the periphery. Keywords: discourse, central, periphery, pluralism.

Therefore, this study used discourse analysis of Theo van Leeuwen focusing on how the subject or actor of the show in the media. This study concluded that the media represent Islam not only with “Western ideology” through idioms such as radical Islamist militants and terrorists, but also with "Islamic ideology". It is done through the construction of Islam as a religion of moderation and delegitimize Charlie Hebdo as magazine satyr abusing freedom. Various strategies are used ranging from strategy passivation to interdetermination. In this case, there are two poles of attraction in both media, namely the Western and Islamic ideology. If both media are quoting from Western sources, the Western ideology dominates the media narrative. Conversely, when both media used Islamic sources, the influence of Islamic ideology dominates the narrative of both media.

Abstract

------------------------Mass media are not free channels because they sometimes portrait and interprete news unlike its reality. After 11 September 2001, hijab and women with hijab have become the new subaltern in the contemporary social and cultural relationships in France. It is interesting to see how political elites, society and women with hijab are seeing those symbols as part of their subject position—emphasizing the concept of ‘self’ and ‘others’. This paper is based on research which employed Critical Discourse method, specifically to examine the level of actor’s positioning in order to elaborate how positioning is used to examine the dynamics of social relation in France, including the various forms of its transformation and its resistence.
