Abstract

The Feng Shui, the "wind-water", is a Chinese system of geomancy using the laws of both Heaven and Earth for harmony and balance of life with the positive qi. Feng Shui is widely used to orient temples, palaces, shops, houses, and other structures, with the reference to local features such as bodies of water, stars, or a compass. The Feng Shui also informs the physical arrangements for manipulation and channeling the qi (positive or negative energy). Although Feng Shui is related to traditional believe and propitious manner, but some of its principles are rational. The current research is conducted to investigate any positive impacts of the Feng Shui application in modern house design. A house in Jakarta designed with Feng Shui was analyzed. The strategies were later examined based on the sustainable architectural design principles, especially its impact on the house functionality.

Abstract

Global challenges such as natural resource depletions, irregular weather pattern, and pollutions were imminent. The Home Green Design proposed by other countries was not suitable to Bali Island because of the local social context. The Balinese House is regulated with the Tri Mandala and Sanga Mandala to achieve the harmonious relations between Macrocosms (Bhuana Agung) and Microcosms (Bhuana Alit) [or Tri Hita Karana]. The Sanga Mandala guides the spatial pattern both on the house and the settlement scale. The Tenganan traditional Village implemented Tri-Mandala which organized the house into the Utama (upper and sacred), Madya (middle and human), and Nista (lower and profane). The Tri Mandala concept is very adaptable to the environment, even in the middle of the economic-driven activities and fast home development. However, the Tri-Mandala really supported the sustainability in the functionality aspect, the social acceptance aspect as well as thermal comfort aspect. Therefore, the Tri Mandala concept could be implemented in the contemporary house design in Bali.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The house design made by Dr.Heinz Frick, Semarang, had design features that were environmentally friendly and affordable. Firstly, the house used local labor as well as local materials beside secondhand building materials and environmentally friendly materials. Secondly, it was very functionally designed by having adequate space size, attractive scenery and adequate lighting. Thirdly, the house was built to create public awareness about sustainable design although it had not entirely been successful because of the economic and social barriers Indonesian people. Fourthly, preservation of cultural diversity was verily considered by Dr. Frick, especially Javanese culture having the concepts of the pavilion, joglo (Javanese traditional building design), and implementation of the terrace as a dining room and as a room for social interaction with the local community. Fifthly, strategy of maximizing cross air circulation and of reducing the moisture was applied in the design of the house. This was done by an open design using nako glass windows, ventilation holes, and jalousie doors that were fitted with wire gauze. Finally, water saving strategy was also applied in the house design. This was done by using rainwater for any use but not for drinking. Meanwhile, water from the Regional Water Company (PDAM) was used for drinking and cooking. It could be concluded that Dr. Heinz Fricks house design was to be a proper solution for Indonesia because of its appropriate and affordable design. Keywords: house design, environmentally friendly, affordable. ABSTRAK Desain Rumah karya Dr. Heinz Frick, Semarang, memiliki fitur - fitur desain yang ramah lingkungan sekaligus tetap terjangkau. Abstract

This research aimed to find out how lighting influence visual task performance of the elderly. The experiment was done on the table with different lamp position and by giving mark on the landolt ring chart printed on different reading media. Three position, the front, the middle and the back were the variables for lamp position, whilst different reading medias were the brown paper usually used for newspaper, the white silk uncoated paper or  ‘HVS’ paper and the white gloss paper. The lamp were TL5 LED with 4000 °K and 6500 °K color temperature. The illumination level maintained specificly at 250-325 lux range. The respondents were 12 elderly with 58 years as the mean age. The result findings, for newspaper, the best position for speed was the front with 1.15 second per stroke; followed by the back with 1.18 second per stroke; and the middle got the lowest result with 1.4 second per stroke. For the HVS and glossy paper with higher luminance, the best for speed was the middle position that was the darkest in illumination, with 1.25 second per stroke for HVS and 1.3 second per stroke for glossy. The worst result was the back with 1.4 second per stroke for HVS and 1.36 second per stroke for glossy paper. For accuracy, the best for newspaper was the front, 96.02%. For the HVS paper, the middle and the back position has got the same highest accuracy, 90.45%. For the glossy paper, the middle position has got the highest accuracy, 91.62%. The visual task performance result, for the newspaper, the front position has got the highest score, followed by the back position that have brighter in illumination, but the score was lowest for the middle position. Contrary, for white HVS and white gloss paper, which get almost identic result, the middle position which was rather dark in illumination was the best, while the front and the back position were worse in visual task performance score. So that can be concluded that the higher illumination level was not always give the best to visual task performance; but depending to the user and the kind of paper or reading media as well.

Abstract

Abstract

Healthcare facilities are very important for sustainable rural regions in developing countries. The Republic of Rwanda, in central east Africa, suffered massive social conflict in 1994 between the Hutu and Tutsi. Furthermore the health problem happened in Burera District because of lack of a proper district hospital. Therefore, in January 2011, the Rwandan Ministry of Health and Partners in Health (PIH) opened the 140-bed Butaro Hospital in the Burera District of Rwanda. The paper-based research was conducted based on hospital’s architecture of Hatmoko, et.al. (2010). Analysis was made with based on the secondary data of Butaro Hospital. Lastly, primary data gathering would be conducted if the funding allowed. The Butaro Hospital was an affordable solution for healthcare problems in rural regions of the developing countries, especially the infectious diseases (such as: HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, nose-ear-and-throat disease). Sustainable innovative solutions for minimum infection were implemented such as: external corridors, large-radius-low-speed fans (with diameters of 24 feet), high-louvered windows, germicidal UV lights, and non-permeable-continuous flooring. The construction of the hospital also would reduce the impact of political crisis in 1994. The project created 4,000 jobs for local craftsmen and local residents. They were initially trained for manual excavation, construction, and project management, before involving in the hospital construction. Therefore, the Butaro Hospital supported the smart regions of Burera area. Keywords: Sustainable and affordable hospital, participatory design, local material
