Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out how the implementation of role plays can improve the students’ speaking skill of grade VII of MTs Mualimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in academic year 2011/2012 and how students respond to the use of role plays methods in teaching and learning process. This research is an action research. In this study the researcher uses action research theory proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart. The participants of the research are the students of grade VII of MTs Mualimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in academic year 2011/2012. The research instrument used by the writer is in the form of observation checklist and test. The data in the research are mainly gathered through the use of pre-test, observation, questionnaires, and post-test. After the data are collected, the researcher analyzes them. The researcher uses the pre-test as the basis for measuring the students’ reading skill. The finding of the research shows that the implementation of translation and discussion can improve students’ speaking skill of grade VII of MTs Muhammmadiyah Yogyakarta in academic year 2011/2012. In the pre-test result, in which they formerly did not learn using discussion and translation, the mean of the pre-test was 55.64. After they learnt English using discussion and translation, the mean of the post-test was 63.3. The students’ response was positive when role plays methods were applied in teaching speaking. Abstract

The aims of this research are to find out how the implementation of translation can improve the students’ reading skill and how the students’ responses to the use of translation method in the teaching and learning process. This research is a classroom action research. The participant is 39 students. The research instrument used is in the form of observation checklist, test, and questioners. The finding of the research shows that the implementation of translation improves the students’ reading skill in the teaching process and the test result. The result of evaluation which carried out in end of the cycle I obtained that the lowest score is 40 and the highest score is 82 then the average score is 58.1, cycle II gets the lowest score is 50 and the highest score is 85 then the average score is 60,9, and cycle III get the lowest score is 60 and the highest score is 85 and the average score is 65.8. Therefore, it can be concluded that the translation method can improve the students’ reading skill of grade VII D of MTs. Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta and the students’ responses are positive when the teacher applied translation method in teaching and learning process.

Abstract

Yogyakarta is one of Javanese cultural centers that still exist both nationally and internationally. Historically, social and cultural developments in the pre-Independence era until the Reformation era experienced significant social change. This research wants to analyze and find the process of social change in Yogyakarta. Selo Soemardjans perspective approach was used in analyzing social change in the pre-Independence era in Yogyakarta. While at the contextual level of social phenomenology analysis used in analyzing the development of social change in Yogyakarta in the post-independence period. The findings in this study are that Yogyakarta experienced a sense of value and culture in the pre-independence and post-independence period. Yogyakarta people who previously put great ethical values of Javanese culture has shifted to the culture of consumptive, business and hedonist. The role of the Sultan and the government is less strong in stemming the various global currents that enter the territory of Yogyakarta. Social control is weak in building and stemming cultural values that are not in accordance with the ethical norms of the old Yogyakarta community. Suggestion of this research is socialization of social and cultural system strengthening from local government to the smallest level of society and family. Second, the need for government to work together with social organizations and religious communities in strengthening cultural identity, ethics and religious norms of society

Abstract

Historically historical literature has cultural roots especially in the development of the character of the values of local wisdom. In addition to the development of literary history culture can be one of the references in the process of writing historiography. This study aims to find the values of local wisdom in the work of historical literature. This research uses historical method. The conclusion in this study finds that the historical literature that developed in Java expressed the literary writers poetry. Culturally, the contents of historical literature reflect the strategy of enculturation of the values of theroyal familys wisdom to the Javanese community. The suggestion in this study is to develop a further study of other forms of enculturation in historical literature in the development of local wisdom values of the Javanese community.
