Abstract

This research investigates social media as the assessment for EFL students at State University of Medan (UNIMED) of second semester English educational program. This research focuses on how social media influences the students’ competences in writing skills. The problems are how it influences their ability to develop their ideas in writing; develop the reading & writing materials; change the students’ opinion on social media in writing class. Questionnaire was designed to get the students’ thought on social media matter, their intention of social media for study, particularly in reading and writing topic and the influence of social media on their ability in developing the idea in writing class. The instruments used in this research were social media as Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram as a text in reading & writing class. The population consisted of 80 students from two classes of English educational program. Data was analyzed using Research & Development Method (R&D) and the Linkert Scale to get the percentage of students’ perception. The findings of this paper indicate that students more enjoy and engage in writing class using social media as their assessments; using social media to develop ideas on a topic; and being more creative in writing skills. However, control and development are still needed on this topic.

Abstract

Abstrak Program pendampingan guru di SDBI AL Azhar bertujuan untuk melatih guru: (1) menguasai sejumlah terhnical terms yang digunakan di dalam setiap topik materi; (2)  menggunakan media pengajaran berbasis ICT; (3) menggunakan Bahasa Inggris yang benar dalam memberi penjelasan dan instruksi. Subjek pendampingan adalah guru mata pelajaran Matematika dan Sains. Pelatihan dan pendampingan menghasilkan RPP yang berisi: (1) technical terms yang diperlukan dalam setiap topik; (2) ujaran-ujaran berbahasa Inggeris yang diperlukan dalam memberi penjelasan; (3) ujaran-ujaran berbahasa Inggeris yang diperlukan dalam memberikan instruksi: (4) media pembelajaran berbasis ICT; dan (5) lembar kerja. Pelatihan dan pendampingan juga telah meningkatkan kemampuan guru dalam pengucapan dan menumbuhkan rasa percaya diri dalam menggunakan Bahasa Inggeris di kelas. Secara kelembagaan, kemandirian dan rasa percaya diri guru dalam merancang RPP sendiri telah meningkatkan kinerja sekolah.   Kata kunci : RPP, tehnical terms, SDBI Al-Azhar Medan

Abstract

Le but the cette recherche  est de savoir la compétence d’étudiant d’utiliser le conditionnel dans la phrase française. La methode utilisée dans cette recherche  est la methode descriptive. L’instrument de prise de donnée consiste  ā utiliser le test  écrit. La population de la recherche  se constitue des étudiants du 5 éme semester du department du français de l’UNIMED. Les données recueillies aupres des étudiants sont analyses par la formule de la distribution de la fréquence relative en pourcentage indiquent que la competence des  élèves ā employer le conditionnel present ;  62,05% et le conditionnel passé; 70,95 %. Le resultat de cette recherche marque que la competence des  étudiants se classe dans la catégorie  suffisante ; 66,50%. Au terme de cette etude, on peut conclure que l’enseignement du conditionnel doit être amelioré si bienque la capacité d’étudiant  est mieux.   Kata Kunci: emploie du conditionnel, phrase française

Abstract

Membaca merupakan proses memperoleh makna dari barang cetak. Ada dua cara yang ditempuh pembaca dalam memperoleh makna dari barang cetak : (1) langsung, yakni menghubungkan ciri penanda visual dari tulisan dengan maknanya, dan (2) tidak langsung, yakni mengidentifikasi bunyi dalam kata dan menghubungkannya dengan makna (Spodek dan Saracho dalam Ahmad Rofi‟uddin, dkk, 2001: 31). Dalam mengajarkan keterampilan membaca dibutuhkan metode yang mampu memotivasi minat pembelajar, karena membaca merupakan salah satu dari empat keterampilan yang harus dikuasai mahasiswa bahasa Inggris UNIMED, selain keterampilan menulis, menyimak dan berbicara. Context Clues merupakan metode pengajaran yang memudahkan mahasiswa menebak kata tanpa membuka kamus, cukup melihat konteks yang diberikan. Dalam mempelajari Literal Reading, tujuan pembelajaran yaitu melatih mahasiswa agar kompeten dalam mengidentifikasi kata pada wacana  dan memahami makna kata berdasarkan konteks dan mampu menemukan gagasan utama dan memahami informasi tersirat dari sebuah teks, metode Context Clues sejalan dengan tujuan pembelajaran Literal Reading. Abstract

Penelitian ini pada dasarnya bertujuan untuk menemukan materi pembelajaran yang tepat dalam pengajaran Written Language Skills (Reading &Writing), dengan menggunakan teks dari media social dan metode curah pendapat. Curah pendapat merupakan tehnik penyelesaian yang bisa digunakan baik secara individual maupun kelompok, mencakup pencatatan gagasan-gagasan yang terjadi spontan dengan cara tidak menghakimi. Berdasarkan proses pembelajaran dikelas, ditemukan beberapa permasalahan yang dilakukan mahasiswa ketika menulis dan membaca: (1) mahasiswa tidak bisa mengembangkan ide ketika menulis, (2) mahasiswa bosan dengan materi yang konvensional. Ada beberapa hal yang menyebabkan hal ini; (1) bahan ajar yang tidak kekinian (2) bahan ajar yang monoton, penuh dengan nasari dan kurangnya visual gambar. Bahan ajar dikembangkan  melalui review dan validasi pakar dan mahasiswa. Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bahan ajar yang telah dikembangkan berhasil meningkatkan minat belajar dan interaksi mahasiswa sebesar 87%. Tujuan akhir penelitian ini adalah untuk mengivestigasi pembelajaran written language skills dengan metode curah pendapat dengan R&D dan menginovasi bahan ajar written language skills.

Abstract

Community service program in the form of training and mentoring the preparation of learning tools, especially the making of learning media aims to improve the competence and performance of teachers MaPel in elementary and junior high school GUPPI Medan -Tembung. In addition, to provide knowledge and skills about the various learning media and the benefits of its use in class; namely to improve students' creativity and KKM. This activity is based on pre-existing observation of the location of dedication by UNIMED research team and agreement with school partners. The target object in this activity is the teachers of lessons in SD and SMP GUPPI Medan - Tembung consisting of 8 (eight) elementary teachers and 15 (fifteen) of junior high school teachers. Form of devotion done through workshops and mentoring the making of learning media and its use in the classroom through real teaching. Certificates and workshop materials are given to the trainees as training facilities and additional media in classroom learning activities. Through this activity, it is expected that teachers can improve their performance and implement the learning maximally with standard learning tools in accordance with the syllabus and curriculum used. Expected with improvements in teacher performance, students are also motivated to be more creative in the classroom and can achieve the required KKM scores.

Abstract

This study is analysis of classroom interaction between English and Mathematics subject which conducted by teachers and students through communication in classroom interaction. The aims of this study were: (a) To identify the kinds of Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) pattern are used by the teacher and students in classroom interaction based on Sinclair and Coulthard Model (1975), and (b) To find out why the Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) pattern is dominant in classroom interaction through different subject. The design of the research used qualitative research. To answer the problem of study, the data collected through the following instrument: observation, recording and interviewing which were analyzed by using Sinclair and Coulthard model and a concept of teaching. The results of this research were the following, (a) it was found that in English and Mathematics classroom discourse, as the IR (Initiation-Response) was used more often by teachers and I (Initiation) was used by students in English classroom then IF (Initiation-Feedback) was used by students in Mathematics classroom, (b) the reason why the IRF pattern dominantly appeared based on teacher’s performance which dominantly initiated questions and information was affected by the presage category and context category then the students’ performance which dominantly responded the teachers’ questions and information was affected by the students’ thought processes category.Key words: Classroom interaction, classroom discourse, Sinclair and Coulthard Model, IRF Pattern.

Abstract

The effect of social media in improving students’ writing skill is investigated in this paper, which can be used to improve students’ creativity in writing. This paper takes covering of second semester English education students of Universitas Negeri Medan that study written language skills. The method used in this research is the development research aims to produce written language skills learning materials using social media (instagram, facebook & whatsapp). Its intention to answer the students’ need of the innovated material and to find out the level of students creativity after using such materials. Further, this paper gives a simpler and practical method to develop learning material using social media to improve students’ creativity in writing.

Abstract

Digital marketing has become a new way to exchange things, starting from information to selling things. UniversitasNegeri Medan (UNIMED) as one of the educational university tries to engage to this digital world. Since the currentfacility of multimedia laboratorybased on Computer Assisted Language learning (CALL), the implementation of e-learning has been developed. Through English for Spesific Purposes (ESP), the students learn further on e-world. The aim of this research is to find out the students’ ability in writing an advertisement using social media.  This research used a development research approach (R & D) that adopts a model developed by Borg & Gall and the questionnares were analyzed by Linkert Scale formula. The research activities wasin the second semester consist of 30 english literature students carried out pre- and post-test, expert validation, and final product. The result shown: 1) social media like Instagram can be developed as the writing material; 2) students’ ability in writing using social media can be implemented in e-marketing to design an advertisement. Furthermore, it’s suggested to do more research on digital marketing to offer a wider opportunies to students in deciding the best job in the future.
