Abstract

Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever is an endemic and important public health disease in Indonesia. Surveillance of hospitalized case usually reported 5.000 cases annually but 10.000 cases could be reported during an outbreak period. The case fatality rate had been decreasing to 4% at present. Studies to analyse the risk factors of an area, pathophysiology of shock or bleeding, prevention, eradication and surveillance were still needed. The important Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever factors were analysed in this tudy based on the 1756 specimens tested in the Communicable Disease Research Center during the period from January1988 to Desember 1988, sent by most of the hospitals in Jakarta. The overall difference between male and female was not significant, although on January, July, September and Desember 1988 females were almost 2 times higher then males.Theoverall difference of children and adult groups were also not significant, although on February, March, November and December 1988 adults were higher 2-5 times then children. This findings were not usual. The antibody response titers during acute and convalescence period of illness was lower among children. These findings were not usual. The antibody response titers during acute and convalescence period of illness was lower among children then adults, although it was still lower then in Thailand.

Abstract

A serological study had been conducted on 1329 specimens collected from DHF suspected cases admitted to 18 hospitals in Jakarta during 1990. Analysis of data were done in 978 paired specimens including: sex, age, hospital origin. The clinical diagnosis accuracy for DHF from the whole specimens were 50,41% compared with 70,13% in 1986-1987. Number of DHF cases were fluctuating from January to September 1990 with three peaks in May, July, September. There was no sex difference. Mode of age group of DHF cases were 5-10 year old. There were also DHF cases among older age group (15-20). This finding confirmed the previous report and might be due to Dengue virus virulence differences and decreasing of endemicity.

Abstract

An analytical study was conducted of 885 serum specimens, from 14 different hospitals in Jakarta, that were submitted to Virology Laboratory at Communicable Disease Research Center, NIHRD, Jakarta, for dengue serology examination using HI test, in 1991. Only paired, acute and convalescence specimens, total of 689, fulfilled the criteria for the analysis. The positivity rate of these paired sera was 43,54%, which is slightly lower compared with 50,41 % that was observed in 1990. There was an increase in number of submitted specimens to the laboratory, starting from January, with two peaks in May and June, followed with gradual decline from July through December 1991.   No significant difference was observed among sex of patients. The mode of age ofpatients were 5 - 15 years old, however sera from older patients (>= 60 years) were also submitted for examination. Factors which could influence those patterns: age, sex, seasonal variation, etc are discussed in detail in this paper.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Dengue haemorragic fever is a disease caused by dengue virus by mediator Aedes aegypti. The effort of overcoming this disease could be done by preventing the mosquito from bitting using repellent. One of natural repellents is neem (Azadiracta indica A.Juss). This study aimed to determine the repellent activity of chloroform fraction of ethanolic extract neem leaf against Aedes aegypti mosquito. Extraction neem leaf done using ethanol 96% by maceration methode and followed fractionation with chloroform. This study was conducted in 5 groups, positive control (DEET 13%), negative control (liquid paraffin) and three series concentrations of chloroform fraction of ethanol extract neem leaf; they were 5%, 10% and 20%. Repellent activity was carried out by counting number of mosquitoes alighted. The amount of repellent activity was obtained from the protection value which was then analyzed using two-ways Anova. The EC90 value gained from probit analysis at significance of 95%. Identification of chemical compound of chloroform fraction of ethanolic extract neem leaf was done using thin layer chromatography (TLC). The results showed that chloroform fraction of ethanolic extract neem leaf had repellent activity against Aedes aegypti mosquito. The average protection value for 6 hours in positive control group and chloroform fraction of ethanolic extract neem leaf at 5%, 10% and 20% concentration were 92,43%, 66,76%, 76,90% and 88,35%. The 6-hours treatment had caused decrease in protection value in all of treatment groups. The effective concentration of chloroform fraction ethanolic extract neem leaf to repel 90% population of Aedes aegypti mosquito for 6 hours treatment was 26,1%. The chemical compund of chloroform fraction of ethanolic extract neem leaf was terpenoid. Keyword: repellent, chloroform fraction of ethanolic extract neem leaf, Aedes aegypti
