Protein and Anthocyanin Production of Waterleaf Shoots (Ta linum triangulare (Jacq.) Willd) at Different Levels of Nitrogen+Potassium and Harvest Intervals

Abstract

The experiment was conducted at IPB Experimental Station, Leuwikopo, Dramaga, Bogor, from November 2009 until February 2010 to study the effect of different  nitrogen+potassium rates and harvest intervals on protein and anthocyanin production of waterleaf shoot (Talinum triangulare (Jacq.) Willd). A randomized complete block design was used with three replications of two factors, which were  four N+K  dosages (50 kg urea + 50 kg ha-1 KCl, 50 kg urea + 100 kg ha-1 KCl, 100 kg urea + 50 kg ha-1 KCl, 100 kg urea + 100 kg ha-1 KCl) and three harvest intervals (30, 15, and 10 days).  The results showed that interaction of 100 kg urea + 100 kg ha-1 KCl and 15-day harvest interval produced the highest content (8.29 mg g-1 fresh weight) and production (4.72 g plant-1) of protein.  The interaction of N+K dosages and harvest intervals were not significant in affecting the anthocyanin content.  The highest production of anthocyanin was produced by single treatment of 100 kg urea + 100 kg ha-1 KCl (152.23 µmol plant-1) and 10 days harvest interval (165.47 µmol plant-1), respectively.  Leaf protein levels negatively correlated with anthocyanin content.   Keywords: anthocyanin, fertilizer, harvest interval, protein, Talinum triangulare

Abstract

The objective of the experiment was to study the growth and fruit quality of several accessions of strawberry grown by hydroponics. The experiment was conducted at farmer farm in Pacet Cianjur, from March 1999 to June 2000. These accessions were collected from Cipanas Cianjur, Ciwidey and Pangalengan Bandung, all of those were unidentified its origin. Nutrition compound used was made by modify nutrition compound for tomato which was obtained from previous experiment. The result of this experiment showed that strawberry plant could produce runner with average one runner per month, whenever all fruit thinned. A strawberry plant produced one leave average per two week´, J 1-18 fruit per year with 13-24 gram per fruit or 210-314 gram per plant per year. It has been found that five accessions tasteless, four accessions had strong sour taste, one accession (No.4) with sweet taste and one another accession (No. 10) with sour sweet taste. The last two accessions had a good taste with fruit weight around 17 gram in average per fruit, smoth texture and adequate firmness. These accessions are being propagated for further experiment. Abstract

The flowering biology of physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) has been observed in dry land (sandy entisol soil type) of Amor-Amor, North Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. Exploration was conducted in several areas where high population of physic nut grown as fence plant was found. Quantitative, descriptive, and observation data were collected for each accession during two-year growth period. Randomized block design was used in this research with three replications from November 2006 until November 2008. Treatments consisted of five ecotypes, i.e. West Lombok, Central Lombok, East Lombok, Sumbawa, and Bima. The results showed that flowering of physic nut West Nusa Tenggara ecotypes was produced continuously during a year, while the peak number of flower was only twice e.g. at the early (November-February) and at the end (April–May) of rainy season. Duration of the flowering process took around 3 days for female flower, around 2 days for male flower, and 7-10 days for total flower per inflorescence. Higher genetic potential for female flower formation was found on West Lombok, Sumbawa, and Bima ecotype. This result should be useful information for breeding programme of physic nut. However, since physic nut is a perennial plant, further study is needed especially on the technology to control flowering.   Keywords: dry season, flowering, fruiting, rainy season,

Abstract

using complete randomized block design with three replications. The means from each plot were compared by using t-student’s test. Application of inorganic fertilizer resulted in a higher shoot production (at 6 week after planting) and a better quality leaves compared to other treatment. This research revealed that high quality waterleaf can be indicated by some criterias, i.e., higher content of primary metabolites (sugar and protein), secondary metabolites (phenolic, flavonoid, and chlorophyll), and antioxidant capacity (low IC50 value). Therefore, application of inorganic fertilizer in wet season is recommended to produce high yields and high quality water leaf. Keywords: sugar, protein, phenolic, flavonoid, DPPH

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries which have abundant germplasm of pummelo (Citrus maxima (Burm.) Merr.). Thepummelo germplasm must be conserved to prevent its extinction due to biotic and abiotic stresses. In vitro conservationusing slow growth technique can be considered as an alternative of ex-situ conservation. Two experiments were conductedto obtain suitable medium to conserve pummelo in vitro. The first experiment was conservation using modified concentrationof MS and sucrose. MS medium concentrations were 1/2MS and MS, while sucrose concentrations were 0, 1, 2 and 3%. Thesecond experiment was conservation using osmoticum and retardant in MS medium. There were six combinations of MSmedium supplemented with osmoticum and retardant, i.e. MS + sucrose 3%, MS + sucrose 3% + paclobutrazol 7.5 ppm, MS+ sucrose 3% + paclobutrazol 15 ppm, MS + sorbitol 2%, MS + sorbitol 2% + paclobutrazol 7.5 ppm, MS + sorbitol 2% +paclobutrazol 15 ppm. The results showed that reducing MS medium and sucrose consentration decreased leaf number andshoot length but increased root number and length. The combination of osmoticum and retardant reduced shoot length, leaf number, root number and length. Based on the planlet visual and inhibition of growth through the decrease of leaf number, shoot and root length, the best medium to preserve pummelo was MS + sorbitol 2% + paclobutrazol 7.5 ppm.Keywords: Citrus maxima, osmoticum, preservation, retardant, slow growth

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate morphological and chemical characteristics of seeded and seedless pummel fruit. The study was carried out during April 2009 to July 2010. The pummelo fruits were harvested from the production center of Sumedang, Pati, Kudus, Magetan, Bireun (Aceh) and Pangkep (South Sulawesi). Some of seeded cultivars have spherical and ellipsoid form, while the seedless one shown pyriform shape. The edible portion of the fruits (juice vesicles) mainly affected by peel thickness and fruit shape. The edible portion of seedless cultivars (57.22%) were not sigificantly different with seeded (57.07%) and potentially seedless cultivars (59.35%). Generally fruit taste of seedless cultivars were sweet to sweet-bitter, meanwhile seeded and potentially seedless pummelo cultivars have sour-sweet. Pummelo juice taste was affected by TSS (total soluble solids), TA (titratable acidity), TSS/TA ratio and naringin content. Seedless pummelo cultivars have higher pH, TSS, TSS/TA ratio, vitamin C and naringin, but lower in TA content than seeded and potentially seedless fruit juice. ‘Jawa 1’ and ‘Bali Merah 2’ pummelos can be further developed as seedless superior cultivars. Abstract

Biannual bearing fruit is a common phenomenon in tropical fruit trees. However, effectiveness of flowering induction on those fruits is still lack of study. The ojective of the research was to study the effectiveness of flowering induction on pummelo of different fruit load on previous year. Field experiment was conducted at farmer´s orchad Bantarmara village, Cisarua, Sumedang Region, West Java (300 m above sea level) from August 2007 to April 2008. Experiment was carried out using Completely Randomize Block Design. Experiment was combination of high crop load and less crop load with strangulation position at main stem and primary branches. The results showed that crop load of previous year (higher and less) with strangulation position at primary branches had significant response to the number of  flower clusters, flower buds, bloming flower, fruits formed, and fruit sets as compared to control, when strangulated at primary branches. Nevertheless,  amount of fruit sets, level of greenness leaf and leaf area seened were not determined by fruit load non position of strangulation. This finding implies that fruit load management is an important factor in determining the success of flowering induction using strangulation.   Key words: fruit load, strangulation, pummelo, flowering induction

Respon Tanaman Pegagan (Centella asiatica L. Urban) Terhadap Pemberian Pupuk Alami di Bawah Naungan

Abstract

The objectives of this experiment was to study the growth, yield and qualitative bioactive compounds of Indian pennyworth (Centella asiatica L. Urban) under different shading levels and biofertilizers.  Field experiment was conducted from February until May 2006 at Kuntum Nurseries Bogor.  Split plot design was used in this experiment.  The main plot was shading level: 55, 65 and 75%. The sub plot was biofertilizer types: Fertifort Super, Fertifort Fine and NPK Novelgro fertilizer.  The result of this experiment showed that plants under the 65% shading level significantly showed better growth, biomass weight and qualitative bioactive compounds (tanin, flavonoid, steroid and triterpenoid) than those of 75% shading level.  The 75% shading level was unsuitable because all plants were dead at 10 weeks after fertilizer application; the 55% shading level gave the best growth responses but 55 and 65% shading level gave no significant differences in biomass weight. Biofertilizer gave no significant differences in leaf and stolon numbers, biomass weight and physiological characteristics except NPK content in plant tissue. Significant difference occured only in N plant tissue content because of interaction with shading level. The different effect in qualitative bioactive compound showed that saponin was found in 55% shading level but not in 65% shading level.   Key words:  Shading, biofertilizer, qualitative bioactive compound, Centella asiatica.

Abstract

Pamelo is one of the oranges species which have variety of form, size, colour and taste. Most of the pamelo cultivars with seeds, while part of it is seedless. The concumen prefer to chose seedles than with seed because they could consume more. The research proposed to know the morphologycal and chemical characteristics of pamelo with seed and seedless. Characteristication done in RGCI and port harvesting laboratory at IPB to the Pamelo come from Sumedang, Pati, Kudus, Magetan, Aceh and Pangkep (South Sulaewsi) in the period of April 2009 until July 2010. The result of research shown that several pamelo seedless cultivars have pyriform, while other with seed have spheroid form. A few fruit from pamelo seedless cultivars have sweet taste until less taste, with pH of its juice vary from 6.2-6.3, except Jawa cultivar which have pH 4 which its total tertiration acid is 0.47- 0.50 g/g, PTT 9.8- 11.0 ( 0brix), PTT/ATT 19,5-25,3. Vitamine C content 38-48.2 mg/100 g and narigin content from 118,3-1063,2 mg/ml, while pamelo with seed have taste sweet acid, with fruit juice pH 3.7 - 4.7, except "red bali 1", which have pH 6.0, ATT 0,35 - 0,59 g/g, PTT 8.7 - 11.3 ( 0brix), PTT/ATT 16.9 - 24.6, vita mine C content 28.6 - 43.8 and narigin content 55.2 - 461.2 mg/ml. The database system covers commodity of fruits database, agro-ecological database, and salaccia and mango information database. "A computer program for determining the best of land suitability was designed based on fruits database and agroecological database.
