Abstract

The objectives of this study are to describe students’ writing skills taught using picture series, to describe the students’ writing skills taught using traditional method, to find out significant difference between students’ writing skills taught using picture series and traditional method, and to find out a better class in producing writing skills e.g. experimental or control class. This research was experimental research. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of SMP N 2 Banguntapan. The samples were taken using lottery technique. For collecting the data, the researchers used paragraph writing test, in the pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using SPSS. The research findings showed that (1) the level of students’ writing skills taught using picture series was “very high” at the category scale of 75-above, (2) the level of students’ writing skills taught using traditional method was “high” at the category scale of  58.33-75, (3) the sig. (2-tailed) value of t-test was 0.000 implying there was a significant difference between students’ writing skills taught using picture series and traditional method, and (4) the result of t-test showed that the experimental class produced better writing than the control class.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to describe the students’ writing skills taught using tutorial video in writing a procedure text, to describe the students’ writing skills taught using conventional method in writing procedure text,  to find out the difference between students’ who were taught using tutorial video and conventional method in writing procedure text, and to find out whether or not the class which is taught using tutorial video is better than the class using conventional method. This research was experimental research. The participants were the second grade students of SMK N 5 Yogyakarta. The results showed that the level of students’ writing skills taught using tutorial video was categorized as “very high” at the category scale 75-above (Mean= 80.11 and SD= 6.716), the level of students’ writing skills taught using conventional method categorized as “high” at the category scale 58.33-75 (Mean = 63.64 and SD= 6.302), the result of t-test showed Sig. (2-tailed) level was 0.000 which implies a significant difference between the students’ writing skills taught using tutorial video and who were taught using conventional method, the experimental class taught using tutorial video produced better writing skills than using conventional method.

Abstract

Based on observation, the writer identifies the following problems at the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Samigaluh, the researcher found some factors that influence student’s speaking skill. Thus, this study investigates about the simulation technique in the process teaching-speaking. It used an experimental design involving 32 students in the experimental group and control group. The instrument used was the speaking test (pre-test and post-test) that was given to both groups. The experimental group was given the treatment using simulation technique, while the control group used conventional teaching. Based on the result, the researcher calculate using SPSS that shows sig/p = 0.00. It was smaller than 0.05 (0.02< 0.05), so there is significant difference between students’ speaking skills before and after using simulation to the seventh grade students of SMP N 1 Samigaluh in academic year 2017/2018. Moreover, the simulation technique could help them to improve their speaking ability.

Abstract

This research is aimed to find out the conformity between the materials in the English textbooks for the seventh grade Junior High School with the basic competences in the syllabus of English Curriculum. This research belongs to an evaluation research. In this study, four kinds of English textbook for the seventh grade of junior high school; ?When English Rings The Bells?, ?Let?s Speak English?, ?Bright?, and ?Headline English?, were? analyzed? based on 2013 English curriculum. The instruments used in this research was a checklist on teachers? interview and also students? interview. The data in this research were analyzed by using 14 criteria according to Tomlinson (2008) to evaluate the course book. Findings show that the materials in the textbooks do not conform to the basic competences in the syllabus. This study shows that not all the content of the textbooks conform to the basic competences in the syllabus of English Curriculum 2013. Beside that some of books also don?t meet the learners want and need. Another finding is that those books had its strengths and weaknesses. Those books provide varied activities and texts and develop character buildings. Besides, they are visually attractive. On the other hand, they did not include material for pronunciation.

Abstract

This study aims to research the responses of teachers and students against the dissolution of RSBI at Vocational Schools in Bantul. The research questions are what are the students and the teachers? responses toward the dissolution of RSBI. This research is a descriptive qualitative research and the approach was naturalistic. The research settings were SMKN I Bantul and SMKN 1 Kasihan Bantul. The data was collected through an open questionnaire. It was analyzed by categorizing the data using a continuous comparison technique. The key instrument of this research was the researcher himself. The? research finding of the research related to the responses were that (1) teachers become more creative in improving their teaching methods (2) the burden of teachers psychology in teaching is reduced (3) the teachers are more comfortable in teaching (4) using Indonesian in learning process can improve a sense of nationalism (5) there was loss of discrimination against individual, social and school (6) the ability of students in English language is declined (7) student facilities are stunted (8) there is lack of opportunity to access information and learning technology ( 8) there is elimination of financial support from government (9) the opportunity for joining on teacher training is limited (10) opportunity for getting qualified students is decreased (11) some school programs are deleted.

Abstract

The aims of this study are (1) to find out the problems of the students in writing, and (2) to find the effective ways of teaching applying semantic mapping technique in genre-based approach to improve writing skill for the tenth graders in SMK Nasional Berbah, Sleman. The study belongs to classroom action research. The object of this research was class X TP of SMK Nasional Berbah, Sleman. The researcher used semantic mapping technique that was combined with genre-based approach to resolve the students? problem in writing. The researcher used qualitative analysis. The finding showed that (1) The problems in writing were (a) most of the students thought that writing was difficult task,(b) the students had difficulties to write a text, (c) the students still lacked of vocabulary, (d) the students had difficulties in developing ideas, (e) the students often made errors in grammatical rules when they wrote a text. (2) The effective ways of teaching applying semantic mapping technique in genre based approach consisted of four stages. (a) In BKOF, the researcher showed the picture about Parts of Motorcycle and drilled about specific words to the students. (b) in MOT, the researcher gave example of recount text and also some questions related to the topic. (c) in  JCOT the researcher asked the students to make a list of main points and developed each point into some sentences. (d) in  ICOT, the researcher asked the students to write a recount text individually based on their own ideas. The result of this study showed that semantic mapping technique could help the students to generate ideas, develop students? ability in writing, and increase the students? knowledege.
