PREPARATION AND PIGMENTED POLYESTER COATING OF SAW DUST PARTICLE BOARD USING ULTRAVIOLET IRRADIATION

Abstract

Experiments on the preparation and pigmented polyester coating of saw dust particle board have been conducted using ultra-violet (UV) radiation curing. The adhesive used for preparation of particle board was the mixture of eugenol and isoeugenol residue as by product of clover oil distillation. Dry saw dust (20 – 40 mesh) was mixed with adhesive at concentration of 16% b.w. The mixture then was hot pressed at 160, 170, and 180 kg/cm2, temperature of 160 °C for 30 minutes. Particle boards obtained have the density of 0.85 - 92 g/cm3, water content of 5.4 – 6.8 % and thickness swelling 45 – 62% ( 2 hr immersion) and unmeasurable for 24 hr immersion due to brittle condition. It was found that particle boards have properties of modulus of rupture = 64 – 71 kgf/cm2, modulus of elasticity = 402 – 447 kgf/ cm2, and internal bond of 0.52 – 0.57 kgf/cm2. Cured coating made of the mixture of polyester resin, photoinitiator (2 and 3% b.w) and pigment (1 and 2% b.w) on particle board and irradiated at 1 – 4 m/min have pendulum hardness = 25.0 – 63.9 sec, pencil hardness = HB – 2H, % remaining = 92 – 100 %, glossy = 42.3 – 58.8 %, and color value of L = 54.3 – 73.9, a = -1.3 – 1.9, and b = 0.4 – 3.3. The cured coatings resist to chemical, solvent and stain, except against 10% NaOH solution and red permanent marker stain.Keywords: Particle board, Coating, Polyester, Ultra violet irradiation.

SYNTHESIS AND CHARATERIZATION OF SUPERABSORBENT POLY(ACRYLAMIDE-COACRYLIC ACID) HYDROGELS BY IRRADIATION TECHNIQUE

Abstract

A series of superabsorbent hydrogels were successfully prepared from acrylamide (AAM) and acrylic acid (AA) without partial neutralized with NaOH by gamma irradiation technique at room temperature. The copolymers were characterized by Fourier Transform Infra Red (FT-IR) Spectroscopy. The gel fraction, swelling kinetics and the equilibrium degree of swelling (EDS) were studied. Under optimum conditions (dose 20 kGy and concentration of AA 0.75 %), poly(AAM-co-AA) hydrogel with high gel fraction (~100%) and very high EDS (~350 g/g) were prepared by gamma ray radiolitycally from aqueous solution. The effect of ionic solution of NaCl and temperature were also investigated. The hydrogels were found to be sensitive to ionic strength of the medium and temperature. It is suggested that poly(AAM—co-AA) hydrogel can be considered to be candidate as biomaterials, matrixs for drug delivery system and water retention in horticulture.Keywords: Acrylic acid, Irradiation, Acrylamide, Superabsorbent.

Abstract

PELAPISAN PERMUKAAN KAYU LAPIS DENGAN POLIMER AKRILAT MENGGUNAKAN RADIASI ULTRA VIOLET. Penelitian pelapisan permukaan kayu lapis dari kayu kamper (Dryobalanops spp.) dengan bahan pelapis polimer akrilat telah dilakukan menggunakan bahan pelapis radiasi dengan nama komersial Overlon, yaitu, dua senyawa polimer epoksi akrilat dan satu senyawa uretan akrilat. Proses pengeringan/pemadatan (curing) dilakukan menggunakan sumber radiasi ultra violet dengan intensitas 80 Watt/cm pada beberapa variasi tebal lapisan dan kecepatan konveyor. Parameter sifat lapisan hasil iradiasi yang diukur meliputi fraksi-gel, weight-swelling ratio, laju nyala, kekerasan pendulum, adesi, kilap, dan ketahanan terhadap bahan kimia, pelarut dan noda. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa resin epoksi akrilat lebih reaktif dan lapisan yang dihasilkan mempunyai sifat fisik, mekanik, termal, dan kimia yang lebih baik dibanding uretan akrilat.Adesi antara lapisan polimer dengan permukaan kayu lapis yang diuji dengan metode cross-cut memenuhi standar pengujian. Pengujian adesimenggunakanmetode uji tarik menunjukkan tersebarnya data besarnya kuat tarik dan pola kerusakan.

Abstract

SINTESIS HIDROGEL SUPERABSORBENT POLI (AKRILAMIDA-KO-ASAM AKRILAT)DENGANTEKNIKIRADIASIDANKARAKTERISASINYA. Satu seri hidrogel superabsorbent telah berhasil disintesis menggunakan teknik iradiasi sinar gamma pada suhu kamar dari akrilamida (AAM) dan asamakrilat (AA) yang tidak dinetralisir parsial dengan NaOH. Kopolimerisasi dari hidrogel dikarakterisasi dengan Fourier Transform Infra Red (FT-IR) Spectroscopy. Pengaruh dosis iradiasi dan konsentrasi asam akrilat terhadap fraksi gel, kinetika swelling dan nilai rasio swelling maksimum(EDS) dipelajari. Larutan AAM–AA dengan konsentrasi AA yang bervariasi 0,25% hingga 1% dipapari iradiasi sinar gamma pada dosis 20 kGy hingga 40 kGy. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa fraksi gel ~ 100% serta EDS ~350 g/g diperoleh dari radiolisis larutan AAM-AA akibat sinar gamma pada kondisi optimal sintesis hidrogel (dosis 20 kGy dan konsentrasi AA 0,75 %). Sifat swelling dalam NaCl, dan perubahan suhu diinvestigasi. Hidrogel poli (AAM-ko-AA) peka terhadap perubahan kekuatan ionik media dan suhu. hidrogel poli(AAM-ko-AA) selayaknya sebagai kandidat bahan biomaterial, matriks pelepasan obat dan penyimpan air di bidang hortikultura
