Abstract

Food pattern and body weight growth of rat inoculation by porphyromonas gingivalis before and after periodontitisBackground: The rat model of periodontitis induced by Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) were selected to prove that energy requirement is rising in periodontitis, as well as the body mass erosion that giving influence to growth. This study aimed to get food consumption pattern and the lowest growth of body weight which would give information about time period to deliver nutrients needed to increase body weight to fasten healing. Methods: Experimental study was done using 63 Wistar adult, healthy male rat in Laboratorium Penelitian dan Pengujian Terpadu Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta in 2007-2008. The subject study were induced periodontitis by bacterial innoculation using P. gingivalis. The objects of the study were food consumption pattern and growth of body weight. Food consumption pattern was percentage of subject finishing food devided by total subject, before and during periodontitis period. Growth of body weight is mean of increasing body weight of 2 adjacent periodontitis period devided by length of day between the 2 periods. Results: The beginning of subject finishing the food was the time when periodontitis identified by Pathology Anatomic examination. Amount of subject finishing the food was variable according to periodontitis process. The growth of body weight before and during periodontitis was inclining by age. The highest incremental of mean body weight per day was observed before periodontitis until the beginning of periodontitis. The lowest incremental of mean body weight was found between the beginning of periodontitis tochronical period 1, as long as 7 days. Conclusions: The subject study began to finish the food since the beginning of periodontitis. During 7 days period from the beginning of periodontitis to chronical period 1, there was the lowest incremental body weight. Simpulan: Subyek studi mulai menghabiskan pakan sejak dimulai periodontitis. Selama 7 hari dari awal periodontitis sampai periode kronik 1, terjadi peningkatan rerata BTterendah

Abstract

Background: It is a fact that natrium consumption relates to hypertension and the risk of heart disease and stroke. Even though it is common happened in later life, hypertension can be started in early age. Objective: The aim of the study is to identify salty food preference, high natrium food consumption, natrium intake, weight and its correlation with blood pressure among schoolchildren.Method: The study used cross-sectional design. There were 151 samples from junior high school chosen by purposive sampling. Food salty level data was assessed by eating the snack with three different salt concentration. High and low natrium source food and natrium intake data were taken using semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Blood pressure was measured by sphygmomanometer digital. Bivariate analysis was used Chi-square and Rank Spearman test. Results: The study revealed that 74,2% children prefer snack with the salt level above recommendation (> 0,5 gr salt per portion ). There were 22,5% children have natrium intake from food only ≥2000 mg (above recommendation). As much as 35,8% children fall into hypertension category based on their blood pressure (BP) level. There was a significant relationship between high natrium food consumption score with natrium intake (p=0,002). There were significant correlation between weight with systolic and diastolic BP ((p=0,000 r=-0,549 and p=0,000 r=-0,412). There were no correlation between atrium intake with systolic and diastolic BP (p=0,764;  r= 0,0025 and p=0,819 r=0,19).Conclusion: Healthy food and maintaining normal weight information and education must be done for children as early as possible.

Abstract

Vitamin A metabolite all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), regulates periodontal collagen synthesis. Type 1 collagen, main component of periodontium was destroyed in perio-dontitis. Objectives: to study the effect of ATRA to body weight (BW), periodontal struct-ure, ATRA concentration, and collagen status. Method: 26 Wistar adult male rat of 8 weeks were used in the experimental study with Rancangan Acak Lengkap. Randomly chosen samples were devided into induced periodontitis through Porphyromonas gingivalis innoculation, and not induced. Tetracycline of 18.36 mg/day were given beginning from the finding of periodontitis, for 8 days. Randomly chosen samples were given ATRA 100 and 1000 µg/day, with A0 group as control. Body weight were measured using digital balance, periodontal tissue with light microscope, tissue ATRA concentration with High Performance Liquid Chromatography, collagen status i.e synthesis and degradation with Reverse Transcriptase Polymerizing Chain Reaction, spectrophotometry UV-VIS and Thin layer chromatography. T test was used to analyze BW mean difference among 3 groups before, also after ATRA supplementation. ANOVA was used to analyze BW and collagen status after ATRA supplementation. Result: There were no significant difference BW before and after supplementation (p=0.063 and 0.804). All-trans retinoic acid improves the collagen fiber structure. Amount of ATRA and RNA were not yet measured due to lack of time, technician & instrument-ation, while they were needed to gain more measurable data.
