Abstract

Abstract : Tenses are very important in learning English because they become the basic knowledge in mastering the language skills. To teach tenses, inductive method is considered as an appropriate teaching method because it can make the students’ actively involved in learning tenses and help them more easily understand the subjects. This research was intended to know whether or not there was a significant effect of using the inductive method on the students’ tense achievement. The findings showed that inductive method significantly affected the students’ tense achievement. The mean score of the experimental group was higher than the mean score of the control group (66.9792 ˃ 62.4038). Key Words : tenses, inductive method, students’ tense achievement

Abstract

Abstract.This article was intended to investigate the effect of using Story Mapping Technique on reading comprehension achievement at MTs.NegeriBangsalsari.Through Story Mapping, the students were helped to comprehend the English text more easily.In this research, two classes were chosen as the experimental and control group. The quantitative data gathered from the result of the mean difference from both of groups to answer the question “Is there any significant effect of using story mapping technique?”.The result of the research proved that “There is a significant effect of using Story Mapping Technique on reading comprehension achievement of the eighth year students at MTs.NegeriBangsalsari”. The findings of the research suggested the English teacher to apply Story Mapping Technique in teaching reading comprehensionto help and improve students’ ability in comprehending the text, so that it give positive impact for students’ learning achievement. Abstract

Abstract.This article is intended to discuss the effect of using Numbered Head Together (NHT) technique at the eighth grade students’ reading comprehension achievement at SMPN 2 TanggulJember. Reading is one of the basic skills that are taught to students at junior and senior high school. Reading relates to reading comprehension. It means that a reader should think critically how to understand the text. Through reading activities, the students are expected to be able to comprehend the word, the sentence, the paragraph, and the text meaning. Therefore, a good reading ability is needed to make students master in reading. The use of Numbered Head Together technique in teaching reading is effective, since it lets the students to cooperate with their group by putting their head together to discuss the problem. This research applied a quasi-experimental with posttest only control group design. The research was conducted at SMPN 2 TanggulJemberwith the eighth graders as the research population. Considering the Homogeneity test’s result, the population was homogeneous, therefore the research sample was chosen by using lottery. VIII-B which had 35 students was the experimental group and VIII-C which consisted of 36 students was the control group. The result of the students’ reading comprehension test was calculated by using independent sample t-test through SPSS program. The result of the calculation showed that the use of Numbered Head Together Techniquegave a significant effect on the eighth grade student’ reading comprehension achievement at SMPN 2 TanggulJember. Abstract

Abstract.This research was intended to know whether there was or not a significant effect of using stick figures on listening comprehension achievement of the eighth grade students of SMPN 13 Jember in the 2012/2013 academic year.Theresearch design was Quasi Experimental Research with nonequivalent group pretest posttest design. The students’ scores of listening comprehension achievement were analyzed by applying t-test formula. The result indicated that the value of t-test was 2.17, while the t-table with the significant level 5% and degree of freedom (Df) 56 was 2.00. The value of t-test was 2,17 and it was higher than 2.00 (2.17>2.00) .In conclusion, there was a significant effect of using Stick Figures on Listening Comprehension Achievement of the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 13 Jember in the 2012/2013 academic year. Abstract

Abstract : The aim of this research is to improve the Class 8A students’ reading comprehension achievement by using Jigsaw IV technique at SMPN 1 Rambipuji Jember. The respondents of this research were Class 8A students of SMPN 1 Rambipuji Jember in the 2012/2013 academic year. The research respondents were determined purposively based the result of the previous reading test score got from the English teachers. The data of this research were obtained from the students’ scores of reading comprehension test, interview, documentation and observation. Based on the results of reading comprehension test in Cycle 1 and 2, it showed that there was improvement of the number of students who got scores more than 71. There were 48.64% of the Class 8A students who achieved the standard score in Cycle 1 while in Cycle 2, the number was improved to 78.37%. It indicated that the number of students who achieved the standard score improved and reached the target percentage of this research that was 75% of the total number of the Class 8A students got more than 71. Abstract

Abstrak. Reading is very important for the students in learning English, especially for the students. The students are able to comprehend what they read to get the ideas and make a conclusion about the information from the text as intended by the writer. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative research. This research began by conducting a preliminary study by interviewing the English teacher of the seventh grade students of SMPN 6 Jember. The data of this research were collected from the students of reading comprehension ability test that was analyzed by using the formula. The result of the students reading comprehension ability of descriptive texts covering word comprehension, sentence comprehension, paragraph comprehension and text comprehension were showed the highest percentage of four indicators was word comprehension with the percentage 83.08% which belonged to the “very good” category and the lowest percentage was the text comprehension with the percentage 57.89% that was classified as “poor” category. It showed that the teaching English in reading comprehension ability of descriptive texts needs to be developed especially in the lowest category that was belonged to text comprehension.   Keywords : Descriptive Research, Descriptive Texts, Reading Comprehension Ability.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to solve the problems dealing with the students active participation and writing achievement. The research design was Classroom Action Research. The area and subjects of this research were chosen purposively by using purposive method. The subjects were the VIII-D students at SMP Negeri 2 Tanggul in the 2013/2014 academic year. The data collected were writing test, observation, interview and documentation. The results of this research showed that there were improvement of students participation and their writing achievement in Cycle 1 to Cycle 2. In Cycle 1, there were 54.05% of the students who actively participated during the teaching learning process. Meanwhile, there were 40% of the students who achieved the target score. Beside, in Cycle 2, there were 70.26% of the students who actively participated during the teaching learning process, while 70.27% of the students achieved the target score. It proved that the use of Spidergram technique could improve the students active participation and writing achievement. Keywords : Active Participation, Classroom Action Research, Spidergram Technique, Writing Achievement.

Abstract

This research was intended to analyze the politeness strategy employed by the characters in expressing apology based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies in the movie The Princess Diaries (2001). Designed as a descriptive-qualitative research, the data was analyzed by using the descriptive method where politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) was applied to see the types of politeness strategies. The data was taken from an American Comedy, Family and Romance movie entitled The Princess Diaries (2001). The result of the analysis showed that there were 15 utterances that can be classified as apologizing expression which were analyzed by using Brown and Levinson (1987) Politeness Strategies. Those 15 utterances were divided into 11 utterances using positive politeness and 4 utterances using negative politeness. Based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies, positive politeness happened in a group of friend and a group of family that have close relationship with the Speaker while negative politeness used to avoid offence of the Hearer by showing respect. Thus, it is concluded that positive politeness was the most politeness strategies applied by all the characters in the movie to express apology, and all the characters who applied positive politeness strategy are female.   Keywords: Politeness Strategies, Apologizing Expression, Discourse Analysis.
