Abstract

The purpose of the research  was to examine the pollen germination process and growth rate of pollen tubes of papaya. Pollen tube growth of nine genotypes of papaya (IPB 1, IPB 2, IPB 3, IPB 4,  IPB 5, IPB 7, IPB 8,  IPB  9,  and  IPB 10) was investigated in this experiment in order to study their pollen germination rate and pollen viability. The fresh pollen were excised from the flowers of papaya grown at Tajur Field Station of  Research Center for Tropical Fruit, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Bogor. The extracted pollen was cultured aseptically on the Brewbaker and Kwack medium (pH 7.3) at ambient  temperature of 26-28 °C. Pollen germination and pollen tube growth was observed under optical microscope with 100 and 400 magnification. Papaya pollen viability was not associated with size-based categories of papaya fruits. IPB 4 had the longest pollen tube at first 30 minutes after germination  (115.5 µm), whereas IPB 10 had the shortest (99.5 µm).  The distance  from  stigma  to   ovary  in  hermaphrodite  flowers  varies with genotypes, ranging from 7.38 to 13.44 mm.  Average length of pollen tube within four hours of germination for small papaya fruit category (IPB 1, IPB 3, and IPB 4) was 1,030.67 ± 19.14 #m, while the distance between stigma and ovary was short (14.85 ± 2.19 mm) so that the expected of  fertilization process occurred sooner.  At the end of the experiment (four hours after germination), IPB 1 genotype  had the longest pollen tube (1,052 µm) while IPB 9 genotype (913 µm) had the shortest  pollen tube.  Genotype with the highest percentage of germination  at the end experiment was IPB 2 (65.65%), whereas the lowest was IPB 7 (42.56%).   Keywords: Carica papaya, germination rate, pollen germination

Abstract

The objective of the experiment was to investigate the physical and chemical characteristics of three stadia of maturity based on a range of peel color from green to yellow or based on percentage of the yellow area of fruit peel (stadium 1 = 25-49 % yellow, stadium 2 = 50-74 % yellow, and stadium 3 = above 75 % yellow) on six genotypes of papaya. Each genotype exhibited different days to maturity for each stadium. The fruits of stadium 1, 2 and 3 for IPB 1 were picked at 130, 135, and 140 days after anthesis (DAA); IPB 10A at 160, 165, and 170 DAA;  IPB 1 x PB 174 at 135, 140 and 145 DAA; while PB 174,  IPB 1 x IPB 10A and IPB 10A x PB 174 were picked at 140, 145 and 150 DAA, respectively. The results indicated that peel firmness was affected by maturity stage on female fruit of IPB 10A. Maturity stage affected chemical characteristics of papaya included total soluble solids (TSS) content (IPB 10A, female fruit of  PB 174, female fruit of IPB 1 x IPB 10A, and female fruit of IPB 1 x PB 174), vitamin C content (hermaphrodite fruit of 10 A, female fruit of IPB 1 x IPB 10A) and juice pH (hermaphrodite fruit of  IPB 1).  IPB 1 genotype can be harvested at all stadia of maturity stage. Hermaphrodite and female fruit of IPB 10 A, female fruit of  PB 174, female fruit of  IPB 1 x IPB 10A and female fruit of IPB 1 x  PB 174 genotype would be better harvested at stadium 3 of maturity stage.   Keywords: Carica papaya, papaya genotype, hermaphrodite fruit, female fruit, fruit quality, fruit maturity stage

Fruit characterization study is very useful for genotype improvement and genotype classifi  cation of papaya. In this study the morphological characters of 36 genotypes were analyzed to determine their phenotypic variabilities.  The relationships between genotypes based on all of the morphological and fruit characteristics were tested by subjecting the data to multivariate principal component analysis and to cluster analysis. Based on the dendrogram generated from vegetative and generative characters, the 36 genotypes could be grouped into 11 clusters on a threshold of 1.6 and formed 6 clusters on a threshold of 1.8.  The dendrogram was able to explain the close relationship between IPB 5 x IPB 1 and IPB 5 x IPB 4, IPB 2 and IPB 7, IPB 1 and IPB 3 genotype. The scattered diagram of generative variable divided the papaya genotypes into three groups based on fruit sizes i.e small group (IPB 1, IPB 3, IPB 4, IPB 3 x IPB 4, IPB 1 x IPB 9), medium group (IPB 5, IPB 7, IPB 8, IPB 9) and big group (IPB 2, IPB 10).  The IPB 1, IPB 3 and IPB 4 were different from IPB 2 in fruit shapes, petal length of male fl  owers, infl orescence size and fruit length. The hybrid plants obtained from crossings with IPB 10 were different from the other genotypes in the colours of female-, hermaphrodite-, and male fl  ower-lobes. Subsequently the scatter diagrams also revealed that several genotypes i.e. IPB 2 x IPB 6, IPB 1 x IPB 5,  IPB 1 x IPB 9, IPB 5 x IPB 1 and IPB 5 x IPB 2 had superior characters  ideotype similar to IPB 1, IPB 3 and IPB 8 genotypes. Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of the research was to study the growth performance of pummelo cv. Cikoneng grafted on several interstocks. Four interstock cultivars i.e. Flying Dragon (Poncirus trifoliata Var. Monstrosa), Troyer (Poncirus trifoliata x Citrus sinensis), Citrumelo (Citrus paradisi x Poncirus trifoliata) and Rangpur Lime (Citrus limonia Os beck x Troyer Citrange) weres ubjectedt o this experiment.A ll interstocksw ereg rafted on JapanscheC itroen rootstock.The experiment was arranged in a Randomized Block Design. All seedlings grew normal, no incompatibility symptom between scion and interstocks was observed. Rangpur Lime interstock tended to retard scion growth, inversely, Citrumelo interstock was the most promoted scion growth. Abstract

ABSTRACTPohpohan (Pilea trinervia Wight.) is one of indigenous vegetables that grows in the mountain areas of West Java. Propagule availability in large quantities and in a short time can be done with cuttings. However, propagation of Pohpohan by cutting  has  not  been  developed  presently.  The objective  of  the research was  to  obtain  the  best  plant  age,  stem  part,  and growing media  for the growth  of  pohpohan  stem  cuttings.  The  research  was conducted  at the Center  of  Tropical Horticulture Studies Experimental Field Tajur-Bogor, from January to July 2013. The cuttings were taken  from  mother plants  of  3,  4, 5,  and  6  months,  then the  cuttings  were  cut  to  stem tips  (B1), central stem  (B2),  and  stem  base  (B3).  The  were  five  cuttings  per experimental  unit. Experiment were replicated 3 times. Cuttings  were planted in polybag containing topsoil media (M0), rockwool (M1), husk  and  compost (M2),  and  vermicompost  (M3).  The  experiment  was  arranged in Randomized Completely Block Design.  Result of experiment  showed that pohpohan from 4 monthmother plant cut  at  stem  base  grow  in husk and compost  grow  best  (99.06% of living percentages, 100% percentage of rooted cutting  and 11-12 number of leaves).  The cutting of stem tips grown  in husk and compost showed the highest mean for the increase of stem length, 3.94 cm. There were no interaction between growing media of stem cuttings and part of stem in the growth of shoot height, number of branch, leaf width, and diameter of stem. Key words: growing media, indigenous, pohpohan, stem cuttings ABSTRAKPohpohan  (Pilea  trinervia  Wight.)  merupakan salah  satu sayuran  indigenous  yang  banyak tumbuh  di  daerah  pegunungan Jawa Barat. Pemenuhan  kebutuhan  bibit  pohpohan  dalam  jumlah yang  banyak dan dalam  waktu  yang  singkat  dapat  dilakukan  dengan  perbanyakan vegetatif stek. Namun  demikian  perbanyakan  stek  pada  pohpohan  belum  banyak dikembangkan  untuk  saat  ini. Tujuan penelitian ini ialah  memperoleh umur bahan tanaman, bagian batang, dan media tanam yang terbaik  untuk pertumbuhan  stek  batang  pohpohan.  Penelitian  dilaksanakan  di  Kebun Percobaan Pusat Kajian Hortikultura Tropika (PKHT) Tajur-Bogor, dari Januari sampai Juli 2013. Pohpohan yang digunakan yaitu berumur 3, 4, 5, dan 6 bulan, kemudian dilakukan stek batang pada bagian pucuk (B1), tengah (B2), dan pangkal (B3).  Rancangan percobaan yang digunakan ialah rancangan kelompok lengkap teracak.  Setiap satuan percobaan  terdiri  atas lima  stek,  percobaan terdiri atas tiga ulangan.  Stek  dimasukkan  ke  dalam  polibag  dengan  media tanam  topsoil  (M0),  rockwool  (M1), arang  sekam  dan  kompos  (M2), serta kascing  (M3).  Hasil  penelitian  menunjukkan  bahwa  stek pohpohan yang berasal dari tanaman 4 bulan,  bagian pangkal batang dan ditanam pada media arang sekam dan kompos memiliki pertumbuhan yang terbaik dengan rata-rata persentase hidup 99.06%, persentase berakar 100%, dan jumlah daun 11-12 helai. Stek pada pucuk batang yang ditanam pada media arang sekam dan kompos memiliki penambahan panjang batang stek 3.94 cm. Tidak terdapat interaksi antara perlakuan stek pada media tanam dengan bagian batang terhadap perumbuhan tinggi tunas, jumlah cabang, lebar daun, dan diameter batang.Kata kunci: indigenous, media tanam, pohpohan, stek batang

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objected of this experiment was to know the dose of NPK fertilizer and most appropriate application of GA3  to increase ornamental pepper quality. The experiment has been done from May until August 2009 at Leuwikopo greenhouse, IPB. The experiment was arranged in Split Plot Design within Randomized Complete Block Design. Main Plot factors was application of GA3 (0 ppm, 100 ppm, and 200ppm) and sub plot was dosage of NPK fertilizer (0 g polybag-1, 1.5  g polybag-1, 3 g polybag-1, and 6 g  polybag-1). The results showed that GA3  100 and 200 ppm increased the plant height, number of nodes of plant, and elongated the  internode of stem, but the generative growth of plant become pursued. NPK fertilizer 6 g polybag-1gave the lowest of plant height and have yielded a  few  of  flower  and  fruit.  Based  on  test  of consumer  preferences,  the  best  appearance  was combination without treatment of GA3 and fertilization NPK 3 g polybag-1.Key words : Ornamental pepper, GA3, NPK ABSTRAKTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui dosis pupuk NPK dan konsentrasi  yang paling tepat dari aplikasi GA3 untuk meningkatkan kualitas tanaman Lada hias. Percobaan penelitian dilakukan dari bulan Mei sampai dengan Agustus 2009 di rumah kaca kebun percobaan Leuwikopo, IPB. Percobaan menggunakan rancangan Split plot acak lengkap. Plot utama adalah aplikasi GA3 (0, ppm  100  ppm,  dan  200  ppm)  dan  anak  petak  adalah dosis  pupuk  NPK  (0  g  polybag-1,  1.5  g polybag-1, dan 6 g polybag-1). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan GA3 100 dan 200 ppm dapat meningkatkan  tinggi  tanaman,  jumlah  node  dan  internode  pada  caban. Pupuk  NPK  dengan taraf aplikasi 6 g polybag-1 menunjukkan hasil yang terendah pada tinggi tanaman, dan jumlah bunga serta  buah  yang  lebih sedikit.  Berdasarkan  uji  preferensi  konsumen,   yang  paling  disukai adalah Lada dari perlakuan tanpa GA3 dan dengan penambahan pupuk NPK 3 g polybag-1.Kata kunci: GA3, NPK, Tanaman Lada NPK

Abstract

ABSTRACTAn experiment was conducted to study the germination and storability of papaya pollen IPB 6 and  IPB  9  stored for 4 weeks at 3  levels  of  low temperature. The experiment was conducted at the Laboratory of Microtechnic and Laboratory of Biophysics  and  Reproductive Biology, Bogor Agricultural University in the month of April to June 2014. Three  variables  were observed in this experiment:  the germination rate, pollen diameter, and length of pollen. The experimental results showed that storage temperature affected the three variables observed. The best germination for IPB 6 was indicated by pollen storage at 10 0C (23.1%) while for IPB 9 was indicated by pollen stored at 5 0C (30.7%). The longest pollen tube  of  IPB 6  after storage  for 4 weeks  was indicated by pollen stored at -20 0C  (63 µm) while for IPB 9, indicated by pollen stored at 10 0C (47.72 µm). The experimental results showed that there was  no corellation between pollen diameter and length of pollen tube with pollen germination in papaya pollen of IPB 6 dan IPB 9.Key words: diameter pollen, pollen tube, germination, storability ABSTRAKPercobaan  dilakukan untuk  mempelajari daya simpan dan daya berkecambah  polen  pepaya IPB 6 dan IPB 9 yang disimpan pada suhu 5 0C, 10 0C, dan -20 0C dengan waktu penyimpanan 0-4 minggu.  Percobaan  dilaksanakan  di Laboratorium Mikroteknik dan Laboratorium Biofisik dan Biologi Reproduksi, Institut Pertanian Bogor pada bulan April-Juni 2014. Tiga variabel yang diamati pada percobaan ini adalah daya berkecambah, diameter polen dan panjang polen. Hasil percobaan menunjukkan  bahwa  suhu  penyimpanan mempengaruhi  ketiga  variabel yang  diamati. Daya berkecambah terbaik untuk pepaya IPB 6 ditunjukkan oleh polen yang disimpan pada 10 0C (23.1%)sedangkan  untuk  IPB 9 ditunjukkan oleh  polen  yang  disimpan pada 5 0C  (30.7%).  Tabung Polen pepaya  terpanjang  setelah  disimpan  selama  4 minggu  pada  IPB 6 ditunjukkan  oleh  polen  yang disimpan pada -20 0C (63 µm)  sedangkan untuk IPB 9 ditunjukkan oleh polen yang disimpan pada 10 0C (47.72 µm). Hasil  percobaan  menunjukkan  bahwa  tidak  ada  hubungan antara  diameter  dan panjang tabung polen dengan daya berkecambah pada polen pepaya IPB 9 dan IPB 6.Kata kunci: daya berkecambah, daya simpan, diameter polen, tabung polen

Abstract

Papaya (Carica papaya) is a climacteric fruit with an increased respiration rate during ripening process. Papaya respiration rate can be inhibited by providing a coating on the surface of the fruits, including chitosan, a polysaccharide derived from shrimp shell waste, or beeswax.The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of chitosan and beeswax coating on the shelf life and quality of papaya Callina fruit during storage. Results of the experiments showed that fruit coating with chitosan and beeswax can extend the shelf life of papaya Callina by four to five days compared to control due to inhibition respiration rate of papaya fruits during storage.The use of chitosan and beeswax was beneficial to maintain the physical and chemical quality of papaya Callina fruits.
