Abstract

A macrozoobenthos study was conducted at Bausan River, Pererenan village, Badung regency, Bali between September and December, 2006. There were six sampling stations were determined purposively. At each station, five unit of square plots of 40 cm x 40 (in maximum solum depth) samples were taken. The result showed that there were seventeen species of macrozoobenthos were found. There was no protected species found in this study. The macrozoobenthos had 2,28 level of index diversity. This indicated that the ecosystem at this area was in a stable condition with a medium level of macrozoobenthos diversity.

Abstract

The research was conducted to identify the effect of rhodamine B on estrous cycle on female mice (Mus musculus L.). Twenty-four female mice were used, and randomly divided into four groups.  Rhodamine B was given orally (gavage) with a dose of  0 ppm (control), 150 ppm, 300 ppm, and 600 ppm in two estrous cycles.  Treatments were started when mice in estrus phases. The time between first and the next estrus phase were observed from vaginal smear preparation. Data obtained were analysed with One Way Anova.  If the differences were appeared between treatments, then the LSD test was performed. The results showed that rhodamine B was significantly increased the time of estrous cycle (P<0.05).

Abstract

In radiology, X-ray has been used to diagnose disease and therapy. However, behind the technologybenefits provided by the radiation, the negative effects are often debated. The purpose of this study was toinvestigate the effects of repeated radiation on sperm quality mice (Mus musculus L). Thirty- two adultmale mice aged three months were divided into groups P1 (1x 200 rad), P2 (2x200 rad), P3 (3x200 rad) andcontrol irradiated with x-rays according to the experimental design . Spermatozoa quality parametersobserved were : number of spermatozoa, motility, viability and morphology of spermatozoa. The results ofthe Post Hoc LSD tests for significant differences (P>0.05) between the control and treatment showed thatthe X-ray radiation exposure to 1x200 rad, 2x200 rad, and 3x200 rad decreases the motility, viability,normal morphology and number spermatozoa produced compared with controls. This is caused by exposureto X-ray radiation causes the formation of free radicals in the body that damage sperm cells mice. Exposureto X-ray radiation repeatedly lowered the quality of spermatozoa of mice.

Abstract

Breadfruit (Artocarpus communis Forst.) leaves have a high antioxidant content. This research aims to know the effect of breadfruit leaf extracts on blood sugar levels and the amount of sperm in rat. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) using 30 rats aged 2-3 months and weighing 150-200 grams. Male rats were divided into six groups, i.e. negative control group (K1) without treatment, groups K2, P1, P2, P3 and P4 are given then NaCl 0.9%, breadfruit leaf extracts 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg body weight, and glibenclamide 1 mg/kg body weight respectively. The treatments were given every day for 21 days. Blood sugar levels were measured before and after aloksan administration, day 7, 14, and 21 after treatment as well as counting the number of sperm after 21 days. The data obtained were analyzed with ANOVA and Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT), using the program of SPSS For Windows version 22. Results of the study showed that breadfruit (Artocarpus communis Forst.) leaf extracts could lowered blood glucose levels and the most effective concentration was 100 mg/kg body weight of breadfruit leaf extracts given for 21 days with the effectiveness of 66,77%. Breadfruit leaf extracts did not inhibit spermatogenesis. So the amount of rat sperm did not different significantly among treatment. Keywords: blood sugar levels, breadfruit, rat, sperm count

Abstract

The role of insects in papaya plants is as pollinators, pests, parasites and predators of other insects. Referring to the role of insects, this research was conducted to determine the insects on an papaya plantations. Traping method using methyl eugenol and ripe papaya fruit as well as the manual method with insect net used in this research. Each method was repeated three times with an interval of sampling is one week. Insect netting done on the same day with traping method. Samples were preserved and then taken to the laboratory for identification. Environmental factors were measured are: temperature, humidity, latitude and altitude. Insects were identified by reference: Borror et al. (1992), CSIRO I & II (1991) and also Peggie and Amir (2006). Five species belonging to the genus Bactrocera found on methyl eugenol traps and five species belonging to the genus Drosophila was found in ripe papaya fruit traps as well as 16 other species found using insect netting around the papaya plant. In addition, there is also the genus Paracoccus on a papaya plant. Bactrocera papayae and genus Paracoccus is an insect pest on papaya plants.Keywords: diversity, insect, papaya plantation, Sanur

Abstract

Bean sprouts, vegetables that are often consumed, contain vitamin E, C, riboflavin, niacin, folate, and some minerals suchas selenium, manganese, zinc and iron. Honey contains monosaccharide i.e. fructose, sucrose, glucose, and maltose. Thisstudy aimed to investigate the effect of bean sprout extract added with honey to the spermatozoa quality of male mice and themost concentration that affected. This research used a completely randomized design (CRD). Twenty male mice divided intofour groups: control (aquadest), P1 (25 mg/g BW bean sprout extract + 0.07 ml honey), P2 (50 mg/g BW bean sprout extract+ 0.07 ml honey) and P3 (75 mg/g BW bean sprout extract + 0.07 ml honey). The extracts were given 0.3 ml/mice/day for 30days. The variables that are observed were spermatozoa motility, morphology, viability and also amount of spermatozoa. Datawere analyzed with one way ANOVA and followed by Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The results showed that beansprout extracts added with honey gave positive effects by increasing type A motility of spermatozoa but decreased type Dmotility. The treatments also increased the amount of spermatozoa significantly. However, 75 mg/g BW bean sprout extract +0.07 ml honey did not affect spermatozoa morphology and viability of male mice (Mus musculus L.). The optimal dose thataffected sperm quality in this research was 50 mg/g BW bean sprout extract + 0.07 ml honey.Keywords : honey, Mus musculus L, bean sprout extracts, the quality of spermatozoa

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the effect of Leucaena leucocephala leaf extract on the development of ovarian follicle cells of mice (Mus musculus). Twenty four female mice, 10 weeks old, were divided into 4 groups. The control group (P0) were given 0.9% NaCl and the treatment group P1, P2 and P3 were given 0.5, 1 and 1.5 g/ kg bw of Leucaena leaf extract, respectively. The treatments were administered daily for 15 days by gavage. After the treatment ended, all mice were dissected to collect the ovaries. Histological preparation of the ovaries used paraffin method and Hematoxylin-Eosin staining. Observations were made on the number of primary, secondary, and tertiary oocytes, and also De Graaf follicles and corpus luteum. Data were statistically analyzed using One Way ANOVA method. The results showed there were no significantly differences (P>0.05) on the number of primary, secondary, and tertiary oocytes, as well as De Graaf follicles and corpus luteum among the control and treatment groups. The mimosine content of Leucaena leaf extract was 0.87% (less than 1%) so it could not inhibit the secretion of Follicle Stimulating hormone by the pituitary gland. The doses of Leucaena leaf extract used in this research did not significantly affect the follicles development of mice ovaries. In this study, the mimosine content of Leucaena leaf extract decreased 91.8%.

Abstract

This experiment was performed to examine the effects of black cumin (Nigella sativa) seed oil extract onreproduction performance and fetus development if given during organogenesis period. Forty pregnantmice were randomly divided into four groups. Extract was treated orally by gavage with doses 0%(control), 0.1 ml, 0.2 ml, and 0.3 ml since gestation day 6 to 15. Caesarean section were performed topregnant mice on day 18 to remove fetuses. Observation covered reproduction performance i.e. the foetusnumber (reabsorptions, dead/ alive foetus), and morphological of the foetus (weight and length of thelitter, and malformations). Statistical analysis was performed using Anova and Duncans Multiple RangeTest. Teratogenic effects of black cumin oil extract caused decreasing of reproductive performance of themother (alive foetus decreased, dead and resorbed foetus increased) and an increased incidence of birthdefects (fetal weight and length and fetal hemorrhage).Keywords: Nigella sativa, congenital malformations

Abstract

This study aims to determine the side effects of high-dose injections of vitamin C in a long term against liver histology. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with different long treatments of vitamin C injection in various doses of P0 (control), P1 (30 days injection), P2 (50 days injection), P3 (70 days injection) and P4 (90 days injection). Parameters measured were plasma levels of SGPT and SGOT, the percentage of hydropic degeneration,  fatty degeneration, pyknotik nuclei, and necrosis of liver cells, and also inflammatory cell infiltration and sinusoid congestion. SGOT levels showed a significant differences (P=0,009) between the treatment and control group by ANOVA test. The Kruskal Wallis test showed that ALT levels were not significantly different (P=0,86), however, the levels of creatinine showed significant differences (P=0,002). The hydropic degeneration were not significantly different (P=0,054) by Kruskal Wallis test, whereas the fatty degeneration were significantly different (P=0,000) between the treatment and control groups by ANOVA test. Pyknotik nuclei and necrotic cells showed significant differences between the control and treatment with the P value of 0,016 and 0,01 respetively. The injected white vitamin C in high doses for long periods decreased the physiological functions of female mice liver.

Abstract

Manfaat vitamin C untuk meningkatkan daya tahan tubuh memang sudah tidak diragukan lagi .  Namun penggunaan vitamin C  dosis tinggi dan dalam jangka waktu lama  dapat menimbulkan efek samping. Tujuan umum penelitian ini adalah mengetahui efek samping dari injeksi white vitamin C dosis tinggi dalam jangka waktu yang lama   terhadap kualitas sperma tikus. Rancangan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) dengan perlakuan lama penyuntikan vitamin C dosis tinggi yang berbeda. yaitu: P0 (kontrol), P1 (lama diinjeksi 30 hari), P2 (lama diinjeksi 50 hari), P3 (lama diinjeksi 70 hari) dan P4 (lama diinjeksi 90 hari). Parameter yang diamati adalah kualitas sperma (motilitas, viabilitas, morfologi, jumlah),. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kualitas sperma tikus (Rattus novergivus). Kualitas sperma tikus jantan  (Rattus norvegivus L.) yang diinjeksi vitamin C  dosis tinggi dalam jangka waktu lama  antara kontrol dan perlakuan menunjukkan perbedaan  yang nyata  (P= 0.000). Kualitas sperma tikus yang diinjeksi white vitamin C dosis tinggi cendrung mengalami penurunan kualitas dilihat dari persentase motilitas, viabilitas, serta morfologi spermatozoa meskipun jumlah/konsentrasi sperma cendrung meningkat..
