Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease that can degrade the qualityof patient survival. Conventional treatments of this disease have potentially dangerousside effects. Therefore, many patients are turning to alternative medicine usingmedicinal herbs, one of which is the fruit of Punica granatum L. The aim of thisresearch was to determine antiarthritis effect of 80% ethanolic extract of Punica granatumL. fruit peel which had been given orally on 17-30th day based on decreased edemavolume and percentage indexes of arthritis. The method was adjuvant induced arthritisby using the complete freund’s adjuvant 0,1 mL by subplantar and allowed toarthritis until day 16. The animals test were used 33 male rats of Sprague Dawleystrain that were divided into six groups: normal control, positive control, negativecontrol, and three groups had received suspension of 80% ethanolic extract of Punicagranatum L. fruit peel in 0,5% CMC at doses 20, 40, and 80 mg/200 g body weight.The Edema volume was measured by pletismometer on days 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 31and indexes of arthritis determined on days 17 and 31. The Results showed that theywere not significant difference in the decreased edema volume and the percentageindexes of arthritis, although the percentage inhibition of edema elevated with increasingdose.

Abstract

Scientific evaluation on pharmacological activity of medicinal herbs required repro-ducible and valid method-induced ulcer models in animal. In this study, the methodof antiulcerogenic effect was investigated using several inducers. The male white Sprague-Dawley rats divided into five groups which were orally administrated water,indomethacin (48 mg/kg bw), aspirin-HCl (150 mg/kg bw), 96% ethanol (1 ml/200 g bw), and 80% ethanol (1 ml/200 g bw), respectively. The result of this study showed that the group was induced with 80% ethanol demonstrated the highest ulcerindex. Histological examination of the stomach showed abnormality of mucosa cells on the aspirin-HCl, 96% ethanol, and 80% ethanol-induced gastric ulcer model in rats.Key words : gastric ulcer, induction method.

Abstract

Breadfruit leaves (Artocarpus altilis (Park.) Fsb.) are used as traditional medicine intreatment of liver diseases. This study aimed to figure out the hepatoprotective effectof breadfruit leaves infusion in carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damage in malealbino rats. The study used 25 male albino rats of Sprague-Dawley strain, which weredivided randomly into five groups. Group I (normal control group) and group II(carbon tetrachloride-induced control group) only received 0,5% carboxymethylcellulose(CMC) solution. Group III-V received different dose of breadfruit leaves infusionfor seven days respectively, which were 13,5 g/kgBW (dose 1), 27 g/kg BW (dose2) and 54 g/kg BW (dose 3). On 7th day, all groups, excepted the normal group, wereinduced by 0,4 ml/kgBW dose of carbon tetrachloride perorally two hours after the lastbreadfruit leaves infusion given. Parameters of liver damage were estimated by measuringthe activity of plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT), the concentration oflipid peroxide in liver, and the concentration of lipid peroxide in plasma. The resultsof ANOVA (p<0,05) demonstrated that breadfruit leaves infusion at a dose of 54 g/kgBW (dose 3) consumed for seven days respectively before 0,4 ml/kgBW dose ofcarbon tetrachloride-induced had hepatoprotective effect estimated by the activity ofplasma ALT and the concentration of lipid peroxide in liver.Keywords : ALT, breadfruit leaves, lipid peroxide, liver.

Abstract

Drug interactions can occur in the use of two or more drugs simultaneously, including the use of synthetic drug with herbal medicine. Combination  of glibenclamide with noni juice (Morinda citrifolia Linn.) often used by diabetic  patient to decrease their blood glucose level. lhe aim of this research was to know  the interaction between glibenclamide and noni juice administration on blood glucose  level. This research used 24 Sprague-Dawley male rats which were divided into 6 groups. Before the experiment, the rats were first induced by alloxan, except group 1, which was the normal control. Group 2 was the control of diabetic without given any drugs. Group 3 and 4 were the control of glibenclamide (0.9 mg/200g body weight of rat) and of noni juice (2.5 ml/200g body weight of rat) respectively. Group 5 and 6 were the interaction test group which were given glibenclamide (0.9 mg/ 200 g body weight rat) and noni juice (2.5 ml or 5.0 ml/200 g body weight of rat) with an hour interval. The blood glucose level was measured by using spectrophotometer with o-toluidine as reagent. The result of this research shows that noni juice at a dose 5.0 ml/200 g body weight rat was able to increased the reduction of blood glucose levels by glibenclamide after two weeks administration

Abstract

The use of traditional medicine in Indonesia as the substitution and complementary of modern medicine for the treatment of disease may cause interactions to other therapeutic drugs in the body. This research was aimed to observe the effect of Morinda juice on theophyllin toxicity in white rats. This research was initiated by checking sample of Morinda juice including organoleptic, density and thin layer chromatography analysis. The effect of pre-treatment time of Morinda juice to theophyllin toxicity was done by taking randomized completely design using 60 male Sprague Dawley rats that were devided randomly into 5 groups. First group (control) was given 225 mg/kg BW theophyllin suspension, second to fourth groups were given 5.5 g/kg BW Morinda juice on 2, 6, 12, and 24 hours before treatment of theophyllin, then all were observed the toxic effect that appeared. The results of interaction effect have shown that the pre-treatment of Morinda juice which was given 2, 6, 12, and 24 hours before 225 mg/kg BW theophyllin increased number of rats death for 40, 60, 60, and 100%.

Abstract

Many diabetics perform self-medication with antidiabetic herbs and synthetic drugs with the aim to obtain a synergistic or additive effects without informing their primary physician, such as the use of creat and glibenclamide. This research was carried out to know the  impact of creat herb infusion on glibenclamide in bwering blood glucose levels on diabetic male albino rats. This study used 24 male Sparague-Lawley rats, which are divided into 6 groups, normal control and diabetic control were given 0,5% CMC solution I ml/200 g bw  of rat, glibenclamide control were given glibenclamide suspension 0,9 mg/200 g bw of rat, creat control were given creat herb infusion 50 mg/200 g bw of rat, and 2 interaction groups were given creat herb infusion in 2 variant doses (50 and 100 mg/ 200 g bw of rat) and glibenclamide suspension 0,9 mg/200 g bw of rat, each of them were administrated orally. All of groups were induced with alloxan 32 mg/ 200 g bw of rat except normal control. Blood glucose was measured by 0-toluidine method at 2 hours and 4 hours after administration. The result showed that the creat herb infusion at 100 mg/200 g bw gave significant impact on glibenclamide in lowering blood glucose levels week after administration. Abstract

Ethanolic extract of bacang mango leaves (Mangifera foetida L.) was reported could decrease blood iron concentration of iron overloaded-Sprague dawley rats. The aim of this experiment was to determine acute toxicity (LD50) value of ethanolic extract of M. foetida by weil method and its effect to blood component. This study was conducted by employing a complete random design using 25 male and 25 female mice of DDY strain which was divided into 5 groups. The first until fourth group were administered by the aquadest suspension of ethanolic extract of M. foetida with dose variation, orally. The fifth group was control group that administered by aquadest only. The LD50 was determined by the total of death on all group. LD50 value of the extract showed no death in the biggest doses (13.013 g/kg). The examination was continued with measured blood count (erythrocytes, trombocytes, leukocytes, and haemoglobin concentration). It was shown that the extract at dose 1.626; 3.253; 6.506 and 13.013 g/kg unchanged the blood count measurement. It is concluded that Mangifera foetida L. leaf was not toxic, but could not change the blood count measurement.
