Abstract

The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the pattern of yield improvement of Jatropha curcas L. of West Lombok ecotype at dry land of North Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara during four years production cycle.  The experiment was conducted in randomized complete block design (RCBD) using three types of propagules (i.e., stem cutting, seed, and seed followed by pruning after transplanting) and three replications from November 2006 to November 2010. The results showed that yield was increased as plant age increased. Plants cultivated during rainy season had higher yield compared to those cultivated during dry season.  However, the oil content of nuts was slightly higher when harvested in dry season than in rainy season.  Yield was also affected by plant material used.  In the first year, plants propagated by stem cutting had the highest yield.  In the second, third, and fourth year, plants propagated from seed followed by pruning produced the highest nut dry weight. During four years production cycle, yearly yield improvement was about 2-3 times than the previous year and did not follow the geometrical progression based on dichotomy branching pattern of Jatropha.   Keywords: dry land, productivity, pruning, seed oil content, type of propagule

Abstract

The flowering biology of physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) has been observed in dry land (sandy entisol soil type) of Amor-Amor, North Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. Exploration was conducted in several areas where high population of physic nut grown as fence plant was found. Quantitative, descriptive, and observation data were collected for each accession during two-year growth period. Randomized block design was used in this research with three replications from November 2006 until November 2008. Treatments consisted of five ecotypes, i.e. West Lombok, Central Lombok, East Lombok, Sumbawa, and Bima. The results showed that flowering of physic nut West Nusa Tenggara ecotypes was produced continuously during a year, while the peak number of flower was only twice e.g. at the early (November-February) and at the end (April–May) of rainy season. Duration of the flowering process took around 3 days for female flower, around 2 days for male flower, and 7-10 days for total flower per inflorescence. Higher genetic potential for female flower formation was found on West Lombok, Sumbawa, and Bima ecotype. This result should be useful information for breeding programme of physic nut. However, since physic nut is a perennial plant, further study is needed especially on the technology to control flowering.   Keywords: dry season, flowering, fruiting, rainy season,

Abstract

Seed and oil production of physic nut (Jatropha curcas) is the function of planting material, growing condition, and also canopy architecture maintenance. The objective of the research was to determine the effect of pruning time on yield of physic nut. An experiment was conducted from November 2007 to November 2010 in North Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara using West Lombok genotype. The experimental design was randomized block design with three replications. There were four treatments i.e. a) without pruning, b) pruning at planting time, c) pruning of 1-year old trees at dormance period (after harvesting), and d) pruning of 2-years old trees at dormancy period (after harvesting). Results showed that development and maintenance of physic nut canopy is one of important agronomic practices to obtain high seed production. The best time for pruning during 3-years production cycle was at the end of harvest of 1-year old trees which could yield more than 4 tonnes seed ha-1. Abstract

Since physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) is heterozygous, sexual propagation results in great genotypic and phenotypic variability. Development of efficient techniques for asexual propagation would benefit the nursery industry as this would lead to selection and production of particular clones with desirable characteristics. Therefore, two following studies were conducted from September until December 2007.  The objective was develop a protocol for vegetative propagation of physic nut by stem cutting in different size of cutting. The first experiment was dealt with stem cutting length (20 cm, 25 cm, and 30 cm) at the same size of diameter (2.5-3.0 cm), and the second experiment was dealt with diameter of stem cutting (3 cm, 2.5-2.9 cm, 2.0-2.4 cm, and 1.5-1.9 cm) at the same size of length (30 cm). Each of experiment was designed in Completely Randomized Design with three replications. Each experimental unit consisted of 25 seedlings. The result showed that cutting growth varied depending on length and diameter of stem cutting. However, better seedling growth and better survival of young plant of physic nut can be obtained from stem cutting with 20-30 cm in length and stem cutting with 2.0-2.9 cm in diameter.   Key words: cutting diameter, cutting length, Jatropha, survival, transplanting

Abstract

Buah kelor (Moringas oleifera L.) yang secara fisik berukuran panjang dan memiliki banyak biji di dalamnya tentu akan menyebabkan perbedaan tingkat kematangan biji dan kemudian perbedaan pada viabilitas benih yang dihasilkan. Penelitian ekperimental ini terdiri atas dua percobaan, yaitu percobaan pertama bertujuan mengetahui viabilitas biji dari tiga posisi biji dalam buah dan percobaan kedua bertujuan mengetahui pertumbuhan bibit tanaman kelor hingga umur dua bulan dari masing-masing posisi biji pada buah tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa posisi biji dalam buah kelor berpengaruh nyata terhadap viabilitas benih, namun berpengaruh tidak nyata terhadap pertumbuhan bibit hingga umur dua bulan. Biji-biji pada posisi di pangkal dan tengah dari buah memiliki viabilitas lebih baik dibandingkan biji-biji pada posisi di ujung buah.Kata kunci: berat biji, pemasakan, perkecambahan, posisi biji ABSTRACTFruits of Moringas oleifera L. is physically long and has many seeds in would certainly cause differences in seed maturity level and then difference in seed viability. This experimental research consisted of two experiments, the first experiment was aimed to find out the seed viability of the three seed positions in the fruits and the second experiment was aimed to determine the growth of the Moringa seedlings up to two months age from each seed position. The results shows that the seed position was significantly affected the viability of the seeds, but were not affected to the growth of seedlings until the age of two months. The seeds in position at the base and the middle of the fruit have better viability than the seeds in position at the end of the fruit.Key words: germination, seed position, ripening, seed weight

Abstract

Perbedaan potensi genetik berpengaruh pada kedalaman perakaran, dan jarak pagar mengubah pola tumbuhnya dalam merespon kondisi lingkungan sehingga tanaman dapat tumbuh dan bertahan pada berbagai kondisi dan jenis tanah, maka pemilihan genotype atau varietas yang akan dikembangkan pada suatu kawasan tertentu perlu menjadi pertimbangan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahuai pertumbuhan perakaran tanaman muda beberapa genotipe unggul jarak pagar. Pembibitan secara langsung pada polibag berisi media tanah-kompos (1:1 v/v) di bawah naungan paranet selama 2 bulan, sebanyak 3 ulangan (masing-masing 25 bibit). Sejumlah 20 bibit berumur 2 bulan ditanam di lapangan berjarak tanam 1.5x2.0 m diatur secara grid systim. Pengamatan akar dilakukan dengan cara membongkar media tumbuh. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa selama periode 6 bulan, tidak ada perbedaan pertumbuhan akar antar genotype.Akar tunggang tumbuh geotropik dengan empat akar lateral yang tumbuh horizontal dan terkonsentrasi pada pangkal akar tunggang, sehingga membentuk sistim perakaran dangkal. Pertumbuhan (panjang dan diameter) akar tunggang tampak lebih mendominasi keempat akar lateral.Kata Kunci: arsitektur akar, biomassa akar, distribusi akar, geotropic ABSTRACTSince there are differences in genetic potential effect on rooting depth, and also Jatropha curcas change the pattern of growth in response to environmental conditions so that the plants can grow and survive in various conditions and soil types, then the selection of genotypes or varieties to be developed in a particular area should be considered. This study aims to know the growth of young plant root of superior genotypes of Jatropha curcas. Seeding directly in polybags plastic containing medium mixtures of soil-compost (1: 1 v/v) under  shade net for 2 months, as many as 3 replicates (each 25 seeds). Some 20 seedlings of 2 months old were field planting with 1.5 m x 2.0 m spacing arranged in a grid system. Root growth observations were done by dig growing medium. The results showed that during the period of 6 months, there were no differences of root growth between genotype. Tap-root grows geotropic with four lateral roots that grow horizontally and concentrated at the base of the taproot, thus forming a shallow rooting system. Root growth, length and diameter, of tap-root appeared to be greater to four lateral roots.Keywords: architectural roots, root biomass, root distribution, geotropic

Abstract

JJatropha curcas L. in the Amor-Amor, North Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara have been grown and developed long ago. It was just as fences of land, yards, and roads, and used as a source of traditional medicine but not as alternative energy sources and as a crop yield. Even if Jatropha seed oil can be used as an energy source family. No commercialize and intensively cultivation, such as the use of high yielding varieties, planting distance, fertilizing and other maintenance, and intercropping with food crops. Another problem faced by farmer groups members is difficult to get fertilizers, proper cultivation techniques, the difficulty of obtaining diesel fuel to operate the water bore-pumps for irrigation purposes. Through science and technology communication activities (Ipteks) was expected to formed the Energy Independent Village. This Ipteks such as counselling, training, and demonstrations conducted by the research team has been able to provide rationalization and true understanding to the farmer groups on aspects of Jatropha as an alternative source of fuel.  Understanding includes benefits of crop as a source of fuel, good cultivation techniques, the potential economic and environmental impact, plant waste management and Jatropha seed oil processing and other benefits plant. Counselling and training undertaken has been able to generate interest and need for farmers to adopt the technology introduced. In addition, education and training was provided to farmers has also empowered them, by involving farmer participatory on any activities performed. Farmer’s empowerment has successes. It was at the phase awareness, interest, and evaluation of the adoption process.

Abstract

Jatropha plants in the Amor-Amor area, North Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara have long been growing and developing as land boundaries, yards, and village roads, but are not used as alternative energy sources, then they do not provide results or income. This is due to limited ability to apply technology for create more profitable. On the other side, utilization of irrigation facilities that have been provided in the form of bore-wells is very rarely used in connection with expensive operational costs, especially on fuel components. Extension activities and demonstrations in the provision of multi-entry Jatropha seedlings with the aim of increasing the knowledge of farmer group members for better implementation Jatropha cultivation technology. The results show that the counseling and demonstration provided was quite capable of arousing interest and the need for farmers to adopt introduced technology. Members of the Telaga Valley Farmers Group were at the trying stage and if assistance is continued, farmers will reach the adoption phase, therefore it takes a long time for technology transformation to form an Energy Independent Village

Abstract

This study aimedseedling derived from stem cutting to determine the effect of various media on the growth of drum stick (Moringa oleifera Lam.). Experiment was conducted from March to May 2017 in the nursery located in Dasan Agung, Mataram, with altitude of 16 meters above sea level. The method was experimental method with 6 media treatments: soil, soil+sawdust, soil+cocopeat, soil+corncob, soil+bamboo leaf, and soil+charcoal rice husk. The experimental design was Completely Randomized Design with 5 replications and 5 unit series. The result shows that the media significantly effect on the growth ofsedling stem cutting. The best media forseedling derived from stem cutting were mixture media of soil+ricecharcoal andsoil+cocopeat
