In Search for Anchors The Fundamental Motivational Force in Compensating for Human Vulnerability

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop a new integrative theory of motivation drawn from the existing theories and data. The method used is a combination of meta-ethnography and grounded theory. The second phase of the study employed a thought experiment to test the newly developed theoretical propositions of motivational force. The first phase of the study revealed a central phenomenon for the occurrence of motivational force, i.e. “In Search for Anchors,” which is a result of the paradox between freedom to choose and human vulnerability. “Freedom to choose” is the central factor of a motivational model that includes “urge,” “challenge,” “incentive,” and “meaning.” These five factors are motivational sources, which have holistic-dynamic-integrative interaction. Human vulnerability is the other side of the motivational model that comprises risk, uncertainty, and hope that ignite motivational force. The dynamic interaction of risk, uncertainty, and hope is represented in a mathematical formula that produces the strength of the force, (R – H)2 x U, which can be potrayed in a “twin-peak” curve. The thought experiment was conducted to test the hypothetical formula. The result shows that the “twin-peak” hypothesis is supported but the shape of the curve is found to be not symmetrical. The data show that hope is the strongest motivational force, therefore the formula is modified into = (R – U)2 x H. The implication of the study and the utility of the new theory are discussed.

Abstract

Perkembangan ilmu manajemen sejak dahulu sampai dengan sekarang menunjukan adanya peningkatan pada penghargaan terhadap manusia datau nilai-nilai kemanusiaan, apapaun definisi dari kemanusiaan itu. Tulisan ini dimaksudkan untuk membahas suatu pola pikir terhadap pekerjaan yang akan mendorong suatu sistem manajemen yang lebih manusiawi daripada kebanyakan yang telah dipraktekan dewasa ini.

Abstract

“Maido” is a peculiar term within Javanese language which meaning is so unique that it has no perfect translation to Indonesian language. It has a mix meaning of denial, rejection,apathetic, or put others down. However, on the positive side, “maido” could mean as an attitude of critical thinking. This study aims to uncover the position of “maido” withinJavanese culture, whether it is one of the local wisdom which supposed to be positive or is it a “cultural accident” that need to be reconsidered. In general the purpose of this study is to understand the meaning and the origin of “maido” attitude within Javanese people. By knowing that, it is expected that the academiciancould treat it proportionally as a part of the psychology of Javanese culture. The method applied to this study is phenomenology as a qualitative approach. Respondents of the studyconsist of the experts of Javanese culture and observers of the culture. The result shows that “maido” does not have a central position in Javanese culture, and the positive meaning is fading away. Currently “maido” is known as a negative attitude thatis not supposed to be shown.

Abstract

Dalam mendesain organisasi ada empat keputusan dasar yang perludiambil. Keputusan itu mencakup pembagian pekerjaan (division of labor), pendelegasian wewenang (authority delegation), pengelompokan tugas (departmentalization), dan yang terkaitdengan span of control. Setelah pekerjaan dibagi-bagi perludipertimbangkan bagaimana melakukan koordinasi. Mekanisme koordinasi ini dapat dilakukan dengan lima cara yaitu (1) mutual adjustment, (2) direct supervision, (3) work process standardization, (4) standardization of output, (5) standardization of skills (input).

Abstract

Studi tentang kepemimpinan menghangat kembali pada dekade terakhir ini berkat dirumuskannya teori tentang kepemimpinan transformasional (Den Hartog dkk, 1997), yangterutama dikemukakan oleh Bass (1985; 1990). Konsep kepemimpinan transformasional ini, menurut Bass, memiliki dimensi yang berbeda dari teori-teori kepemimpinan sebelumnya. Teori ini merupakan gabungan antara paradigma ‘trait’, gaya dan pendekatan contingensi (ketergantungan) (Den Hartog dkk, 1997), sehingga dapat dimasukkan dalam penganut aliran yang penulis istilahkan sebagai integrated psychology (Riyono, 1998). Salah satu ciri dari integrated psychology adalah konsepnya tentang manusia yang memandang manusia sebagai ‘integrated man’, ‘being’, and ‘becoming (Bennis dkk, 1994).

Abstract

This study examined difference in career aspiration between married and single women who work for government offices. Subjects of study were government employee at Pemda Kulon Progo with a total number of 120 person; 84 of them were married with working husband and 36 were single working women. Data were collected through questionnaire consisting Career Aspiration Scale (Wisnuwardhani 1998) and demographic data questionnaire. The data were analyzed with t-test for independent samples and product moment correlation analysis. The result shows that there is no significant difference on career aspiration between married-women and single-women working for government offices (t=1,379; p>0,05). Other results reveal that level of education influences the magnitude of career aspiration (r=0,269 ; pKey Words : Career aspiration, Married and Single women.

Abstract

Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) can be formally defined as a discretionary work behaviour of the employees that is not recognized by the formal reward or the sanction system of their organization. OCB can be seen as a voluntary behavior of the employees, which is out of the job description of their obligation, it is not directly related to the formal reward, but useful in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization.Previous research found four aspects of the job characteristic (variety skill, task identity, task significance and autonomy) positively effected on OCB of employee. The objective of this study was to look effect of job characteristic to OCB which mediated by values of Quality of Work Life (QWL). This values as a foundation to display OCB. The subjects of this research were 65 employees from PT. X. Regression analysis showed that job characteristic significant toward OCB through the mediating of QWL values. In another word QWL had a mediator role between job characteristic and OCB. This finding were usefull to improve the OCB in company, with more attention to job characteristic that promote employees’ QWL. The results and benefits of the research were further discussed in the discussion.

Abstract

Intrinsic motivation as a theory emerged in a study that defies the effect of reward to performance. This claim was strongly opposed by behaviorists, who believed that the role of rewards as reinforcement was very important. This controversy continues until today. Since then, there had been competing researches guided by two different perspectives.This study examines the relationship between intrinsic motivation and performance through meta-analysis techniques. 24 studies were selected according to the inclusion criteria of this study, and analyzed to find the correlation of intrinsic motivation and performance. The result show that correlation between intrinsic motivation and performance is r = 0.26. This result could lead to two conclusions. The first conclusion could be that there is a significant correlation between intrinsic motivation and performance. On the other hand the correlation was not as strong as expected, meaning that external factors, like reward, could have stronger correlation with performance.  Key words   :   meta-analysis, intrinsic motivation, performance

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aimed to analyzed the role of youth in the empowerment of persons with disabilities and to analyzed the implications for families economic resilience of persons with disabilities.This research was a qualitative descriptive study with data collection throught : (1) interview, (2) observation, and (3) the documentation with investigation techniques using triangulation techniques.The results of this study indicated Youth had a role in encouraging the participation of all elements of society to petrified with disabilities achieved prosperity. Empowerment activities also had contributed to the increase in income persons with disabilities. Although there was an increase in income, family economic resilience, conditions of persons with disabilities was still at the poverty line ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis peran karang taruna dalam pemberdayaan penyandang disabilitas dan menganalisis implikasinya terhadap ketahanan ekonomi keluarga penyandang disabilitas.Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui: (1) wawancara, (2) observasi, dan (3) dokumentasi dengan teknik pemeriksaan menggunakan teknik triangulasi.Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan Karang Taruna memiliki peran dalam mendorong partisipasi seluruh elemen masyarakat untuk membantu penyandang disabilitas mencapai kesejahteraan. Kegiatan pemberdayaan juga telah memberi kontribusi pada peningkatan pendapatan penyandang disabilitas. Meski terdapat peningkatan pendapatan, kondisi ketahanan ekonomi keluarga penyandang disabilitas masih berada pada garis kemiskinan
