Abstract

Cycad aulacaspis scale (Aulacaspis yasumatsui Takagi (Hemiptera: Diaspididae)) is native to Thailand and Vietnam. Since the early 1990s it has been spreading around the world due to the trade in cycad plants for ornamental use. Infestation by this scale can kill cycads in only a few months. Its accidental introduction to Florida endangered the ornamental cycad-growing industry; and in Guam and Taiwan, endemic cycads (Cycas micronesica and C. taitungensis, respectively) are currently threatened with extinction by cycad aulacaspis scale. In November 2011, an introduced scale was discovered damaging cycads in the Bogor Botanic Garden. Samples from Bogor were taken for identification of the scale, and the material was kept for some time to rear out any insect parasitoids that were present. Both the scale insects and parasitoids were prepared on microscope slides and studied microscopically for authoritative identification. The scale was confirmed as A. yasumatsui. The parasitoid Arrhenophagus chionaspidis Aurivillius (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) and the hyperparasitoid Signiphora bifasciata Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Signiphoridae) were identified from the samples. Unless immediate remedial measures are taken, several endemic species of cycad in Indonesia may be endangered by infestation by cycad aulacaspis scale.

Abstract

Anastatus dasyni Ferr wasp (Hymenoptera: Eupelmidae) is one of the parasitoids attacking eggs of the pepper berry sucking bug, Dasynus piperis China (Hemiptera: Coreidae). Study was conducted in the laboratory to determine immature development, adult longevity, fecundity, sex ratio, oviposition preference, and number of host parasitized. The result showed that immature development time from egg up to adult was 15.57 + 0.09 days, mean fecundity was 99.45 + 5.60 eggs, and sex ratio (% of females) was 67.28 + 0.56%. If provided with honey 10% and host eggs, females lived for 37.7 + 2.78 days and males 6.30 + 0.56 days. Host eggs aged one and two days were more preferred by A. dasyni for oviposition. Mean number of hosts parasitized by this wasp aged less than one day was much lower as compared to the older one. Abstract

Most of thrips from Thripidae family are pests on horticultural crops. To date, there are no records in the species richness of thrips in horticultural crops. The aim of the research is to conduct inventory on thrips spp diversity that are associated with horticultural crops in West Java. Sampling were done in several horticultural crops areas in Bogor, Cianjur, and Lembang (West Bandung). The identification process began with sample slide preparations along with the documentation of the character from each species. The identification was done mainly by using the identification program Oztrips and some other published identification keys. Identification key was built based on diagnosis characters of each species. The results found there were 15 species, that are Ceratothripoides brunneus, C. revelatus, Frankliniella intonsa, Megalurothrips typicus, M. usitatus, Scirtothrips dorsalis, Thrips aspinus, T. coloratus, T. hawaiiensis, T. javanicus, T. malloti, T. palmi, T. parvispinus, T. sumatrensis, and T. unispinus. T. aspinus and C. revelatus were new record for Indonesia.

Abstract

Canopy Arthropod Community Dwellers in Maize Planting. Dwellers the canopy arthropod community structure observed in maize planting in the Village Bajeng, District of North Polombangkeng, Takalar District, South Sulawesi. Observation of the canopy arthropod dwellers performed using suction machine. The results showed that the arthropod community on corn cropping consists of arthropod natural enemies, fitofag and other arthropods. Most of the arthropods that act as predators, which consists of four insect family is Formicidae, Coccinellidae, Carabidae, Gryllidae, and the two spider families is Lycosidae and Linyphiidae. Maize crop canopy arthropod dwellers generally is formicid, coccinellid, cicadellid, and pentatomid. In the maize crop canopy, formicid and aphid abundance were higher in the edge plots, whereas coccinellid, lycosid, and linyphiid higher in the center of the plot.

Abstract

During 2008 crop season, an outbreak of severe yellow mosaic disease on yard long bean (Vigna unguiculata subsp. Sesquipedalis) occurred in several farmers’ fields in West Java. Yard long bean var. Parade inoculated manually with extracts from symptomatic leaves showed the symptoms indicating the presence of virus. Symptomatic leaf samples tested positive in enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with antibodies to group specific Potyvirus and Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). Total RNA derived from symptomatic leaves was subjected to reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) using primers specific to the cylindrical inclusion (CI) protein of potyviruses and CMV coat protein (CP) specific primers. Pair wise comparison of sequences obtained from cloned RT-PCR products with corresponding nucleotide sequences in the GenBank confirmed the presence of Bean common mosaic virus strain Blackeye (BCMV-BlC) and CMV in the symptomatic beans. Sequences of BCMV and CMV isolates from the beans showed maximum nucleotide sequence identities (92-97%) and (90%), respectively with BCMV-BIC and CMV isolates from Taiwan. Each virus isolate also clustered closely with corresponding isolates from Taiwan in a phylogenetic analyses. These results provide first evidence of the occurrence of multiple infection of BCMV-BIC and CMV in the yard long been from Bogor, West Java. Key words: yard long bean, BCMV-BIC, CMV, Bogor Indonesia

Abstract

Liriomyza sativae is a polyphagous agromyzid leafminer and it has invaded large part of world, i.e Hemiptarsenus varicornis, Gronotoma micromorpha, and Opius dissitus. This research were conducted to investigate progeny, immature development period, longevity of female parasitoids of L. sativae, and to study female parasitoid behaviour in host finding. Host finding behaviour was observed by examining their visit frequency to the leaves that mined by leafminer larvae and healthy leaves. Results showed that H. varicornis produced more progenies (10.70 + 2.58 progenies/female), but not significantly different (P < 0.05) from progenies produced by G. micromorpha (9.90 + 3.81 progenies/female) and O. dissitus (9.60 + 3.31 progenies/female). The immature development period of G. micromorpha (25.65 + 0.38 days) was found to be longer than H. varicornis (16.14 ± 1.20 days) and O. dissitus (14.03 + 0.22 days). Significant different (P = 0.1014) of adult longevity was not found among H. varicornis (9.22 + 2.48 days), G. micromorpha (7.25 + 1.34 days), and O. dissitus (8.74 + 2.18 days). Our analyses also indicated that G. micromorpha and O. dissitus found their hosts based on the larvae mining, however, H. varicornis performed it randomly. Based on the number of progeny and longevity of adult female, all parasitoids tested may have a potential as biological control agents of leafminer, L. sativae. Abstract

Serangan hama merupakan masalah utama yang dihadapi dalam budi daya jabon (Neolamarckia cadamba [Roxb.] Bosser) di Indonesia khususnya di Sumatera Selatan. Arthroschista hilaralis Walk. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) merupakan salah satu hama penting yang menyerang tanaman jabon. Informasi mengenai tingkat serangan A. hilaralis pada tegakan jabon diperlukan sebagai bahan pertimbangan pengelolaan A. hilaralis. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengkaji insidensi dan intensitas serangan A. hilaralis yang menyerang tegakan jabon umur 2 dan 4 tahun selama 2 musim pengamatan, serta mengkaji pengaruh faktor cuaca (suhu dan kelembaban udara) terhadap serangan A. hilaralis. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada 6 lokasi yang terletak pada beberapa daerah di Sumatera Selatan. Pada setiap lokasi penelitian ditentukan 3 plot masing-masing seluas 0,03 ha dan berisi 20 tanaman jabon. Pengamatan insidensi dan intensitas serangan A. hilaralis dilakukan sebulan sekali selama 16 bulan yang mewakili 2 kategori waktu pengamatan, yaitu musim hujan dan musim kemarau. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa serangan A. hilaralis paling tinggi terjadi pada tegakan jabon umur 2 tahun dan pada musim hujan dengan insidensi dan intensitas serangan masing-masing sebesar 74,45% dan 55,21%. Faktor cuaca (suhu dan kelembaban udara) berpengaruh terhadap tingkat serangan A. hilaralis. Suhu udara berkorelasi negatif terhadap insidensi (r = -0,629; p = 0,009) dan intensitas serangan A. hilaralis (r = -0,546; p = 0,029), sedangkan kelembaban udara berkorelasi positif terhadap insidensi (r = 0,900; p &lt; 0,0001) dan intensitas serangan A. hilaralis (r = 0,768; p = 0,0005).

Abstract

Red spider mite Tetranychus sp. is one of the most important pests attacking leaves of Jatropha curcas. The objective of this study was to elucidate life history parameters and abundance of spider mite on two J. curcas cultivars. Field studies were carried out in BALITTRI Pakuwon Sukabumi, and laboratory experiments were conducted at the Department of Plant Protection, Bogor Agricultural University, from June to November 2008. Cultivars significantly affected several life history parameters of the spider mite. Spider mite reared on IP1-P cultivar have longer oviposition period and higher fecundity than those on IP2-P (7.00 days and 25.56 eggs against 5.00 days and 10.00 eggs). The sex ratio of spider mite was 3.2 : 1 on IP1-P and 2.5 : 1 on IP2-P. Intrinsic rate of increase was also higher on IP1-P. However, field studies indicated that the spider mite were less abundant on this cultivar. These might be due to the presence of other arthropods which were higher on IP1-P. In general, the highest population of spider mite occurred in August and the lowest in October–November. Predatory mite Family Phytoseiidae was found associated with spider mite, however its role as natural control agent was not significant.

Abstract

Opius chromatomyiae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is an endoparasitoid attacking leafminers in the field. The objective of the research is to study the statitiscal demographic of the parasitoid. Result showed that female lifespan (9.95 days) was shorter than male (11.73). Female fecundity was about 104.73 eggs. with rate of egg production per day was about 9.31 eggs. This parasitois was also found to be female-biased sex ratio. Regarding population parameter, net reproduction rate (Ro) was about 28.55, of increase (λ) 1.23. The stable age of Opius chromatomyiae was about 37.93% eggs, 24.92 % larval, 20.36 % pupae and 16.78 % adult.

Abstract

Tetragonula laeviceps (Smith) adalah salah satu spesies lebah tak bersengat yang paling umum dijumpai di Indonesia. Namun demikian, tidak banyak publikasi tersedia tentang ritme aktivitas penerbangan T. laeviceps. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengkaji aktivitas penerbangan T. laeviceps dalam kaitannya dengan waktu harian dan berbagai unsur cuaca. Tiga koloni diamati setiap jam selama 5 menit dari pukul 06:00 hingga 18:00 WIB. Pengamatan meliputi banyaknya T. laeviceps yang keluar sarang, masuk sarang, membawa polen, membawa resin, dan membuang sampah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa aktivitas penerbangan berbeda nyata (P &lt; 0,001) di antara jam-jam pengamatan. Secara umum, preferensi waktu (akrofase) aktivitas penerbangan terjadi pada pukul 11:00–12:00 WIB. Banyaknya T. laeviceps yang keluar dan masuk sarang berkorelasi positif (sedang) dengan suhu udara dan intensitas cahaya, tetapi berkorelasi negatif (sedang) dengan kelembapan relatif.
