Abstract

This research identified the use of language learning strategies by the viewed from differentgender, ethnicity, types of school, academic background and parents’ income. The research subject of thisstudy is limited to ten selected students related to the above five factors, and taken purposively byconsidering the factors which relate to them. The research instrument of this study is a written interview.The technique of data analysis used is qualitative analysis in which the answers of the respondents arepresented in the form of tables. Each table is discussed only on a certain element like the most preferredstrategies used by sub-factors.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate how Pekanbaru seniorhigh school students learn various language skills (listening, speaking, reading,writing as well as vocabulary and structure). One of the definitions of languagelearning strategies is defined by Oxford (1990b). She states that languagelearning strategies are specific actions taken by the learners to make learningeasier, faster, more enjoyable, more self-directed, more efficient, and moretransferable in new situation. The needed data were collected by interviewing10 selected students from five ethnic groups (Malay, Minangkabau, Javanese,Batak, and Chinese) at various senior high schools in Pekanbaru. Therespondents were asked to answer the following question: If you are asked toincrease the the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing aswell as vocabulary and structure), what do you do? Inter-rater reliability wasused to judge the answers of related respondents in the interview by the qualifiedinter-raters-that are master’s degree in TEFL. The inter-raters modified therespondents’ responses in casual English into acceptable written Englishwithout changing the concept of the expression. The highest frequency hasbeen acknowledged. There are 67 strategies identified as the most-preferredstrategies employed by the respondents to increase the language skills as wellas vocabulary and structure. The use of these strategies can be grouped intoonce-mentioned, twice-mentioned, and more than twice-mentioned. Examplesof strategies mentioned more than twice for improving for improving speakingskills, preparing as much vocabulary as possible (four times); and for improvingwriting skill, the strategy of writing procedurally (three times). Suggestions forfurther study are those the successful learners, less successful learners, andgifted learners should also be taken into account as crucial factors to investigatein the near future.Key words: strategies, skills, individual

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate language learning strategies by successful studentsof senior high schools in Dumai, Bengkalis, and Selat Panjang based on gender andparents’ income and to investigate their strategies in learning English generally anddeveloping skills of listening, speaking, writing, reading, vocabulary, and structure. Thesample are taken randomly as big as 10% or 400 students out of 4000 students as thepopulation. Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) (Oxford; 1989) andinterviewing section are used to get the quantitative and qualitative data. Descriptive andinferential statistics, One-Way Anova, and Product Moment Coefficient Correlation aresome sets of data analyzing technique. The findings show different language learningstrategies among the students based on gender and parents’ income. The students usedsocial strategy (mean: 4.02) as the most effective strategy. The implication of the study isthat language learning strategies should be taught in the classroom.Key words: Language learning strategies, Successful students.

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of thisreseach is to acknowledge the ability onpedagogical competence of 2015 practice teaching of (PPL) students of English StudyProgram of FKIP University of Riau. The research is a descriptive research method.This research consists of one variable, that is teachers’ pedagogical competence. It ishoped that this research can be used in motivating students in learning English. Thepopulation of this research is the seventh semester students at English Study Program ofFKIP of University of Riau Pekanbaru and there were 50 students of class A, B and C.The questionnaire of the research cover 28 items about teachers pedagogicalcompetence with 4 options of 7 indicators. Through the questionnaire, the data werecollected and then analyzed by using M. Ali’s (1993) formulae. Based on the dataanalysis, it was found that the English students’ pedagogical competence is in the levelof good. In detail, the most dominant problem faced the students is in interrelationshipamong school, family, community, national education and educational innovation. Theeffort of the English students should be sustained in the part of educational institutions,principals, and teacher in order to improve the quality of the student-teachers’pedagogical competence.Key Words : Pedagogical Competence, Practice Teaching (PPL), and English StudentsAbility in Teaching class.

Abstract

Abstract: This research activity is to find out the contribution of rally table method to improve the writing skill of the first year students of SMAN 5 Pekanbaru. The participants were 39 students. The data was collected by using observations, tests, and field notes. The data was analyzed by quantitative and qualitative. The research finding showed that the implementation of rally table method as the teaching method could improve students’ writing ability both at the first cycle and second cycle. The finding also proved that in the pre-test students’ average score was only 44 and it improved to 56 in the post-test 1, and finally improved to 76 in the post-test 2. It was also proved that applying the procedures of rally table method in teaching writing could raise students’ interest and motivation to learn and share ideas with their groups since the core of rally table method was a collaboration between groups or pairs. In addition, applying rally table as a teaching method in English language teaching and learning could also improve students’ ability to writing in English in terms of grammar, vocabulary, mechanic, fluency, and organization. Since Rally Table method has been proven effective in teaching writing a descriptive text, it was suggested that English teachers apply this method in order to improve students’ writing skill.Keywords: Rally Table, Students’ Writing Ability and Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract : The purpose of this study is to find out the ability of the second grade students of SMAN 1 Kuantan Hilir in comprehending report text. This research focuses on students’ comprehending report text in terms of finding main ideas, factual information, the meaning of vocabulary, identifying references and making inferences,.The data were collected using report text test with multiple choice type. The test contained 30 items. The try out was conducted to check the validity and reliability of the test. Based on the research, it was found out that first: the ability of the second grade students in comprehending report text is in the mediocre level with the mean score of 53.13. Second, the students’ mean score in finding the main idea is in good level with the mean score of 66.83, finding the factual information is in mediocre level with the mean score of 58.01, in finding the meaning of vocabulary is in mediocre level with the mean score of 48,90, in finding references is in mediocre level with the mean score of 53.93, in finding inference is in poor level with the mean score of 37.98. As a conclusion, the highest score obtained by the students is in finding main ideas with the mean score of 66.83 which is categorized into good level, and the lowest score that the students got is in finding inference ,with the mean score of 37.98 which is categorized into poor level. This results of this study suggest that the students to learn more about comprehending report text.Keywords : Study, Ability, Report text.

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental study is aimed at finding out if there is a significant effect of Know, Want to know, and Learned (KWL) teaching techniqueon the ability of the first year students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru in comprehending report texts. The design of the study is one group pre-test-treatment-posttest design. There are 12 classes in the first year. As many as 36 students of class X IPS 3 in the first semester of academic year 2018/2019 are chosen as the sample by using cluster random sampling technique due to the particular class presents various characters of the whole classes like; academic achievement, the students’ learning seriousness toward English and the size of the classroom. The instrument of the test is in the form of multiple choice which consist of 25 items about report texts. To collect the needed data the treatments were conducted for six times. The students’ scores were analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) version 23.00 for windows. The results of the data analysis show that the mean score of the pre-test is 57.556 and the mean score of the post-test is 79.00. It means that the value of t-test is higher than t-table (11.055>1.95996) at 5% the significance level. Therefore, the alternative hyphotesis (H1) of this study is accepted. In other words, there is a significant effect of KWL teaching technique on the reading comprehensionability of the first year students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru. The implication of this finding is be beneficial for the teachers in teaching and learning English especially in teaching reading.Keywords: Effect, KWL Teaching Technique, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this descriptive research was to describe the students’ ability in choosing conjunctions. The sample of this research was the fourth semester students of English Study Program of Universitas Riau. There were 29 students participating as the sample of this research. The data were quantitative and the instrument of the research was a set of multiple choice structure test which consists of 40 questions about choosing the correct conjunctions to complete English sentences. The collected data were analyzed by calculating the scores of the students in answering the test and classified them to a certain level of ability in choosing conjunctions. The result showed that 3 out of 29 students (10.34%) were in the excellent level of ability, 6 students (20.69%) were in the good level of ability, 8 students (27.59%) were in the average level and 12 students (41.38%) were in the poor level. The students’average score was 52.67. This meant that the students’ ability in choosing conjunctions was in average level of ability. The most difficult type of conjunction for the students is subordinating conjunctions with the mean score 49.48 whereas the easiest one is coordinating conjunctions with the mean score 56.90. This research recommended the students to study more about subordinating conjunctions by practicing to answer questions to make them more familiar with subordinating conjunctions. Future studies should focus on how to improve the student’s ability in choosing conjunctions.

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this descriptive research was to describe the students’ ability in choosing the correct prepositional phrases for adverb phrase. The population of this research was the second year students of the English Study Program of Universitas Riau as big as 86 students of 2014/2015 academic year. Due to the population is very large, which consist of 3 classes, the cluster random sampling technique is used. The whole of number of the population is about 86 students. One of the class is taken as the sample as many as 30 students. The multiple choice test is used to collect the needed data of prepositional phrases for adverb phrase. The collected data were analyzed by calculating the scores of the students in answering the test and classified them to a certain level of ability in choosing the correct prepositional phrases for adverb phrase. The research finding show that the majority of the students passed in choosing the correct prepositional phrases for adverb phrase as big as 90%. This means that the students’ were capable to comprehend the test. The suggestion is that the unsuccessful students should learn more and read about prepositional phrases for adverb phrase. In addition, the teacher should give more explanation about prepositional phrases for adverb phrase for the group of the unsuccessful students.Keywords: ability, choosing, prepositional phrase, adverb, phrase

Abstract

Abstract : This research was designed to describe the student’s ability in comprehending procedure text and aimed to find out the students ability in comprehending procedure text. This research was conducted in SMKN 1 Bangkinang that has been collected in February 2018. The subject of this research was XI TKJ 1 (34 students chosen by cluster random sampling. The result showed that the ability ofthe eleventh grade students of SMKN 1 Bangkinang in comprehending procedure text was in good level whosepecentage was 41.1%. Therefore, this research recomended the students to improve their grammar and choose the reading content wisely..Key Words : Student’s Ability, Procedure Text
