Abstract

Municipal solid waste or MSW has potency to be decomposed by microorganisms and trasformed into compost.  The waste contains 60%-75% of organic materials C, H, O, and N.  The aim of this research was to develop a simulation model based on mathematical equations describing the phenomenon of the  composting.  The population of  microorganisms , the rate of  O2 consumption , the rate of CO2 production , the rate of H2O production, the rate of carbon nitrogen ratio or C/N, and temperature were the variables tested in this research.  Validation was carried out by comparing datum of simulation model with datum of composting.  Simulation model was declared valid if the values of each parameter were  r2 > 0.75, the  total value of Err was closed  to zero, and the distribution of Err was independent to time.  The sensitivity test was analyzed by comparing the value changes of variable tied with the value changes of free variable.  Correction from the simulation model in predicting the microorganism population, CO2, O2, and temperature  could be  expressed  respectively  as  y’ = 1.06(y-1.003),  y’ = 1.07(y+ 0.07), y’ = 1.02(y+ 0.05), and y’ = 1.02(y - 1.05).  The temperature, the C/N and the rate of  O2 consumption were sensitive to the changes of microorganism population and the radius of the bioreactor.   Key words: composting, organic materials, simulation, bioreactor

Abstract

ABSTRACT Freeze drying is the best among the drying methods, especially for high value products. This is due to some reason: minimize tile degradative reaction such as non enzymatic browning, protein denaturizing and enzymatic reaction, little loss of flavor and aroma and high re-absorptivity of solvent. However due to slow drying rate, the drying time is longer and energy consumption is higher, that make freeze drying process expensive. To overcome the problems, drying was proposed to operate by application of vacuum freezing and back heating beside the use of radiation from the upper surface of product. The objective of this research was to prove that freeze drying with vacuum freezing and back heating (PBPVpb) consume less energy than freeze drying with contact plate freezing (PBLS). The research was started by designing and manufacturing a PBPVpb before operating and analyzing it. This research found out that the energy consumption of PBP/pb was 90.6% of PBLS although the drying time of PBPVpb WaS 29% longer than that of PBLS. The drying rate of PBPVpb was 5 g/h whereas PBLS was 5.6 g/h. Keyword: freeze drying, vacuum freezing, baok heating Diterima: 26 Juni 2007; Disetujui: 19 Agustus 2007

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was to apply artificial  neural network (ANN) to enable accurate and fast prediction of moisture, protein. lysine and methionine contents of ftishmeal. The several wevelenqths of near intrared absorbance, range from 900 to 2,000 nm, were selected for training and validating ANN on each chemical component by stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. Tne ANN with three, five. seven and nine nodes at hidden layer were trained using 35 samples for moisture and protein, 33 samples for lysine and 30 samples for metionine Validating was conducted on 10 independent samples. The results of validating indicated that the best of protoin prediction was achieved by ANN with seven nodes at hidden layer for moisture. five nodes for protein and methionine, and three nodes for lysine. The standard error of prediction, coefficient of variation and ratio of standard deviation and standard error of prediction respoctivety were 0.61%, 4.81%, and 6.89 for moisture contents; 2.99%, 6.43% and 3.34 for protein contents: 0.14%, 11.32% and 3.04 for lysine contents: and 0.07%. 10.50% and 2.16 for methionine contents. With the same data entry. the ANN could predict with better performance than did by multiple linear regression Keywords: artificial neural network, near infrared, fishmeal Diterima: 25 September 2007, Disetujui: 9 Nopember 2007

Abstract

Many problems of coffee bean stability during storage and sea transportation are related to moisture content and the water activity of the beans. The moisture content of the beans is affected by temperature and relative humidity of the ambient air. Equilibrium of Moisture Content (EMC) defined as moisture content in substances was equal with moisture content in the surrounding air. EMC is a measuring rod of multiply microorganisme ability to cause destruction or degrading material during storage. The objectives of this research work were to determine water soption isotherms characterization of green coffee beans by BET and GAB models. Temperature used is 25-39 oC that usually found in storage of this commodity in tropical regions. Green beans used in this research are South Sulawesi arabika and robusta dried beans that dry process produce. The result showed that to be base on sorpsion area, water sorption isotherm regression equation by BET model showed that Robusta equilibrium moisture content on 70 % relative humidity which 32 oC and 25 oC temperature storage were 11.93 % and 11.22 % by BET model, and 12.81 % and 11.87 % by GAB model. For Arabica, 11.07 % and 11.09 % by BET model, and 11.65 % and 11.78 % by GAB model.
