NUTRIENTS INTAKE AND NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF STREET CHILDREN IN BANDUNG

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to analyze food habits and nutrients intake, and health and nutritional status of street children. The research was carried out in the City of Bandung, West Java; Indonesia. A sample of 324 street children was selected randomly. The sample consisted of 232 boys and 92 girls. The data obtained from questionnaires. Means, standard deviation, frequency and proportion were calculated with a combination of software applications:  Microsoft Excel and Statistical Analysis System. The result showed the level of consumption adequacy did not meet the recommended dietary allowances i.e. with the shortage of 10-15%, this is an indication that the street children should be aware of their daily food consumption. The most common diseases suffered by the respondents were acute respiratory infections (ARI) (47%). In addition, 22.7 % and 18.4 % of them suffered from diarrhoea and skin diseases, respectively. Blood haemoglobin status of street children shows that the incidence of anemia was 29.3%. Based on the classification of nutritional status, 42.7% and 80.4 % of street children were underweight and stunted, respectively. Key words: nutrients intake, nutritional status, street children

Abstract

The importance of the application of healthy behaviors in elementary schools need serious attention. Results of a preliminary study revealed the low student behavior, especially on the selection of healthy foods. Efforts to do one of them by conveying this information by using the right media health education. This study aimed to increase the knowledge of elementary school students through health education media "Smart with Your Foods". Implementation has been performed using a quasi-experimental design with non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Research subjects are elementary school students. Respondents were divided into the experimental class and control class. This research reveals that "Smart with Your Foods" media effectively to enhance students knowledge about the selection of healthy foods. Conclusion: This media is effective in improving the selection of foods knowledge for elementary school students

Abstract

Kondisi fisik seorang Atlet sangat mempengaruhi stamina ketika mereka bertanding. Indikator kondisi fisik yang prima dari seorang Atlet adalah status gizi dan status kesehatan. Salah satu masalah kesehatan yang sering di hadapi oleh para Atlet adalah Eating Disorder atau penyimpangan perilaku makan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menjaring persepsi mahasiswa Pendidikan Kepelatihan Olahraga FPOK UPI yang berprofesi sebagai atlet mengenai pendidikan gizi untuk mencegah kecenderungan eating disorder. Metode Deskriptif digunakan dalam penelitian ini dengan pendekatan cross-sectional desain, Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan kuesioner. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa responden mempunyai persepsi kuat bahwa pendidikan gizi sangat penting dalam mencegah kecenderungan Eating Disorder pada atlet. Sebagian besar responden setuju bahwa tempat yang paling tepat untuk menyampaikan pendidikan gizi bagi para atlet adalah di kampus dan klub olahraga. Setengah dari responden memberikan persepsi bahwa bentuk kegiatan yang paling tepat dalam menyampaikan pendidikan gizi bagi atlet adalah penyuluhan secara berkala, dengan menggunakan metode gabungan dari diskusi, demontrasi dan simulasi, dan durasi yang dianggap tepat selama 60 menit, serta media yg tepat adalah audio visual.
