Anxiety theory was introduced by Freud in 1890. It began with a thought that anxiety comes from the unrevealed libido. Afterward Freud than agree with his colleague, Otto Rank that the nature of anxiety begin from early birth traumatic. Freud divided anxiety into three categories; reality anxiety, neurotic anxiety, and moral anxiety. Then Freud divided again the neurotic anxiety into three different part; anxiety because of the frightened inside and outside factor, anxiety that related to specific object that manifested as phobia, and neurotic anxiety that has nothing to do with the inside and outside factor. There are some defense mechanism to anxiety situation; repression, reaction formation, projection, regression, rationalization, displacement, sublimation, isolation, undoing and intellectualization.Keywords: anxiety theory, Freud, defense mechanism
