Heart Size Evaluation of Indonesian Domestic House Cat by Motion Mode Echocardiography Imaging

Abstract

Indonesian Domestic House Cats (DHC) are prone to various diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases. Physical examination alone is not enough to differenciate cardiac diseases, which is why further screening tests such as heart ultrasonography-echocardiography are needed. Since there has been no information regarding the heart size of Indonesian DHC, the purpose of this study was to determine the heart size of an anesthetized Indonesian DHC through Motion mode echocardiography imaging. Nine male cats weighing between 3.3-3.4 kg were anesthetized using zolazepam-tiletamine. Echocardiographic examinations were taken on the right parasternal short axis view at the papillary muscle and aorta level using a 7.5 MHz transducer. Result showed that the wall thickness, left ventricular internal diameter and fractional shortening of the Indonesian DHC were similar compared with those in other cat breeds with the same average weight. The left atrium internal diameter and the aorta diameter of the Indonesian DHC were relatively smaller. However, the left atrium and aorta diameter ratio were similar to the result in other cat breeds with the same average weight. Through this study, we also could specify the left ventricular volume, stroke volume, cardiac output and ejection fraction that not yet reported before.

Abstract

Prevalence of heart disease in dogs was very high and required early diagnosis through physical examination, electrocardiogram, and echocardiography. Normal reference values of echocardiography are highly breedspecific and need for comparison and evaluation of dogs suspected with heart disease. Therefore the aim of this study was to establish normal reference echocardiographic values for Indonesian mongrel dogs, specifically to find out intracardiac dimensions, wall thickness, and fractional shortening. Motion-mode and two-dimensional echocardiography from right parasternal short axis and long axis view were performed on nine clinically healthy dogs consisting of five males and four males. The results showed that wall thickness and fractional shortening of Indonesia mongrel dogs were higher compared with those in the other breed that have the same average weight. As opposite, the intracardiac dimensions and lumen dimensions of aorta and left atrial diameter were smaller. These differences might occur due to factors other than the dog’s habits and functions such as working and hunting, but can also be caused by the existence of breed differences. There was no significant difference between male and female dogs in terms of intracardiac dimension systole (P = 0.53), diastole (P = 0.38), fractional shortening (P = 0.053), and the ratio of aorta and left atrial diameter (P = 0.06).

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of blood flow which passed through theaortic valve of normal Indonesian mongrel dogs using trans-thoracic Pulsed Wave Doppler (PWD)echocardiography. Eight (8) adult dogs (three male dogs and 5 female dogs) with an average age 3.31 ± 0.59years and average body weight 12.45 ± 1.30 kg were used in the study. Trans-thoracic PWD echocardiographyexaminations were performed in conscious/unsedated animals at the left lateral recumbence position. Theinstruments used in this study were: i) two dimensional ultrasound device and ii) phased array transducersmall foot print with 3.7 – 5.0 MHz frequency. Six elements of PWD were measured: i) heart rate (HR); ii)peak velocity (Vpeak); iii) velocity time integral (VTI); iv) mean pressure gradient (MPG); v) pulsatilityindex (PI); and vi) ratio of systole-diastole (S/D). Results showed the typically characteristics of blood flowin semilunar aorta valve is demonstrated by the only one peak wave (peak velocity = Vpeak) upon examinationby placing the Doppler scan volume right on the aorta valve. In general, all six elements of PWD measuredwere found to be higher in female dogs compared to male dogs. However, these differences were notstatistically significant (P>0.05).

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pencitraan struktur jaringan penyusun organ reproduksi jantan pada domba ekor tipis (DET) melalui pencitraan B-Mode ultrasonografi. Penelitian ini menggunakan 3 ekor DET jantan dengan berat 14-16 kg berumur 10-12 bulan. Pencitraan ultrasonografi dilakukan secara langsung pada domba tanpa menggunakan anestesi atau sedasi. Transduser linear berfrekuensi 7,5-15 MHz digunakan untuk memeriksa organ reproduksi jantan meliputi preputium, penis, epididimis, dan testis. Pemeriksaan dilakukan secara melintang dan memanjang dalam proses pemindaian. Hasil yang didapat adalah struktur jaringan penyusun organ reproduksi jantan dapat terlihat jelas dengan ekogenitas yang bervariasi. Bagian organ juga dapat dibedakan melalui pencitraan ultrasonografi sesuai dengan bentuk struktur jaringan penyusun organ yang diamati.

Abstract

Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui karakteristik aliran darah yang melintas pada katup semilunaraorta pada anjing kampung normal menggunakan pulsed wave Doppler (PWD) ekhokardiografi. Studidilakukan pada delapan ekor anjing dewasa yang terdiri dari tiga ekor anjing jantan dan lima ekor anjingbetina dengan rataan umur 3,5 tahun, dan rataan bobot badan 12,5 kg. Pemeriksaan PWD ekhokardiografidilakukan dalam keadaan sadar dan tidak disedasi dengan posisi hewan berbaring ke sisi kiri.Pemeriksaan dilakukan dengan menggunakan alat ultrasonografi (USG) dua dimensi dan tipe transducerphased array small foot print dengan frekuensi 3,7-5 MHz. Enam unsur yang diamati adalah frekuensijantung, peak velocity (Vpeak), velocity time integral (VTI), mean pressure gradient (MPG), pulsatility index(PI), dan rasio sistole-diastole (S/D). Hasil pengamatan menunjukkan karakteristik aliran darah di katupaorta hanya memiliki satu puncak gelombang yang disebut dengan peak velocity. Secara umum padakeenam unsur yang diamati karakteristik aliran darah yang melalui katup aorta pada anjing jenis kelaminbetina memiliki nilai-nilai yang lebih tinggi daripada anjing jenis kelamin jantan, walaupun perbedaanini tidak berbeda nyata (P>0,05).

Abstract

Endocardiosis is a disease commonly found in Pomeranian dog characterized by progressive myxomatousdegeneration of the atrio-ventricular valves especially in the mitral valve. The purpose of this study was todefine the diagnose and severeity of this disease on the Pomeranian by using brightness mode, motion mode,dan color flow Doppler echocardiography technique. Echocardiography was performed on 8 Pomeranianconsisting of 6 males and 2 females with age range of 2-14 years. Brightness mode echocardiography wasused to see the echotexture of endocardium, mitral valve, and the valve movement. The results showedendocardium thickening, along with chronic fibrosis and nodular thickening of the anterior and posteriormitral valve leaflet. Three out of seven cases showed prolapsed of the mitral valve. Motion modeechocardiography was performed in order to measure left ventricle internal dimension, myocardium thickness,fractional shortening, left atrial and aortic dimension. The results showed myocardium thickening, alongwith left atrial enlargement. Color flow Doppler echocardiography was used to confirm the mitral valveregurgitation. Three of seven cases showed the presence of regurgitation signed by turbulence color of theprolapsed mitral valve. Based on the degree of severity, scoring system used in this study, endocardiosis canbe divided into three types that are mild, moderate and severe.

Abstract

Intestinal motility and contractility in cats can be affected by many factors that originate from inside and outside the body. Anesthesia is one of the factors that could influence it.This research was conducted to figure the effect of tiletamine-zolazepam on the intestinal motility and contractility in the cats through contrast radiography study. Three male cats weighing between 2,5-3,5kg were used in this present study. Radiography procedure was performed twice on each cat: without anesthesia and one week later with anesthesia (0,02 mg/BW atropine sulphate and 10 mg/BW Zoletil®).The cats were given a positive contrast, barium sulphate (BaSO4) 30% w/v (12 ml/kg BWper oral) followed by radiography study. Radiography was performed at 5, 30, 60, 120, and 180 minutes after administration of BaSO4. The cats were positioned on laterolateral view. Data were analyzed descriptively using zone division and quantitatively by measuring the difference between the intestines diameter during contraction and relaxation. The intestinal diameter was measured and statistically tested using ANOVA. Result showed that in minute 180, BaSO4 reached zone four in the unanesthetized cat while in the anesthetized cat, it was still empty. The diameter differences of the unanesthetized cat was higher compared to the anesthetized meaning that the intestinal contraction in the unanesthetized cat was higher. This means that tiletamine-zolazepam anesthetic reducedof intestinal motility andcontractility. Keywords: cats, barium sulphate, gastrointestinal motility, contrast radiography, tiletamine-zolazepam  

Management Femoral Fracture in Cats using Intramedullary Pin and Wires Fixation

Abstract

On April 2016, Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Bogor Agricultural University (VTH FKH IPB) received 4 cases of femoral fractures in cats caused by trauma. Two cats suffered oblique diaphysis fracture femoral, one cat suffered comminuted diaphysis fracture femoral, and one cat suffered epiphyseal fracture femoral (column femoral and trochanter major). All cats were treated by open surgery using intramedullary pins (Steinmann) and cerclage wires (Kirschner). Fracture recovery went without complication and all cats were able to move their feet one week after surgery.
