Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The study on –able and adjectives ending in –able/-ible (Munandar, 1999:74-82) was done based on historical analysis. The study revealed the role of etymology of words in the divergence of the suffix –ible and -able. It discusses that in the course of its development, English got influences from Latin, French, Scandinavian, and other languages. The most outstanding influences, however, are those of Latin and French. From Latin and French , English had adopted many words and other elements to fulfil the need for adequate expressions. These borrowings are preserved to their strong influence (high productivity) up to the present use. The origin of words is ,thus, worth knowing not only of its possible explanation for the rule of deriving adjectives with the suffix –able/-ible, but also of its relationship to determine the meaning of adjectives formed from words which are not of current use. This is in line with Marckwardt (1960:177) who assumed that the etymology of a word may serve as a guide to its proper use and meaning, although current usage is the only scientifically valid criterion to define the meaning. The presentation of meaning and usage in this article will demonstrate how that assumption works. Some adjectives are assigned with meanings in present usage different from those of the etymology of basewords. While some others whose basewords are not found in current use are recognized after the origin of the basewords are revealed. The tracking of origin is done by looking up two dictionaries: The Oxford Dictionary of English Etymology and The Old English Dictionary. The findings are cross-checked with the current meaning and usage in the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English.

Abstract

Two parallel experiments were conducted to study the effect of training and pruning on the growth and development of durian. Two-years old durian clones Matahari and Monthong had been pruned and or trained for 19 months as open center, central leader, palmette leader and left untreated (control treatment) in five (for Matahari) and six (for Monthong) replications.             Training and pruning treatments resulted in more open crown as indicated by lower (35 - 40%) leaf area index, better growth analysis as indicated by better dry matter partition and growth rate. Relative growth rate (RGR) and net assimilation rate (NAR) of trained and pruned trees were high during 12 - 15 months after treatment, although their absolute growth rate cumulative crown dry matter low compared to untreated trees. Compared to pruning , training treatment gave higher contribution to NAR.             Due to wet climate of  local Bogor and ontogeny of the durian used in this experiment (at late juvenile stage, 3.5 year old durian), the effect of training and pruning on the development of the durian as observed by flushing phenology had not been revealed. Flushing rhythmic pattern of treated and untreated durian were almost same.   Key words: durian, tree architecture, training, pruning, phenology.

Abstract

Roof garden can be interpreted as garden residing in a roof top. Not all plants can survive living on roof tops. The plants which can be planted in roof gardens have to be adaptive to high speed of wind, extreme temperature, and high intensity of irradiation. Objective of this research is to learn environmental influence of stress that induced anatomical adaptation of tree spesies (i.e Bauhinia sp., Erythrina christagalli, Mussaenda sp.and Wodyetia bifurcata) at roof garden in Taman Anggrek condominium, Jakarta.Plants which are planted in normal garden will response differently with the ones in roof garden. Different plants have their own adaptation form that can be visible from their anatomy. The result of this research is Bauhinia sp. shows a better adaptation in roof garden, Wodyetia bifurcata can adapt well, while Erythrina christagalli and Mussaenda sp. cannot adapt well in roof garden. A simple visualisation value concluded that Bauhinia  sp. has a better shape, then the others. After all, this study should be completed with research of more physiological pattern and a complete assesment of tree visualisation.
