Abstract

Economic activities contain three parts, namely production, distribution, and consumption. This paper deals with the first one in the perspective of Islam. We maintain that at no point in human history was there any economic system that could successfully achieve an absolute happiness and wellbeing for human kind. Islamic system of economics included. Nonetheless, we argue that Islam consists of values and norms that may lead toward that end if they are properly and appropriately understood and applied. We do not find in Islam what we found in the conventional economic system where there are rooms for committing corruption and manipulation. For Islam, economic activities as far as production is concerned must be directed toward achieving the goodness and prosperity of all human kind, and not toward enriching certain individuals and groups among individuals.

The conscience of studying Islamic teachings for implementation cannot be apart from the role of Islamic dakwah institutions. It can be proved by institutionalization of Islamic law even though only in terms of family law, bequest, and donated property, and moreover the alms and pilgrimage institutions are recently founded. Such profit sharing practices basically aimes at creating justice and provide balances for economic users and their environments. Furthermore, profit sharing practices show partnership relation among enterprise practitioners; more than just the relationship between superiors and subordinators. This kind of spirit does not end in profit oriented only but also establishing human based relationship which aimes at helping and caring one another. Dealing with the nature of the sprit above, sharia economic practitioners should have been energized and inspired and able to realize them in more real and synergical economic relationship. However, one important thing that they usually forget in developing business institution is lack of understanding toward the culture of the society where they build business, including sharia banking. Understanding toward local culture and wisdom of the society is one of the significant factors required in designing, harmonizing, and developing business. This implies that a busines institution should not aim at corporate oriented only. Infact, it should have relations of socio-culture) and coorporate social responsibility.
