Effect of Zn Supplemented to Immune Status Premenopausal Women Intervented with Isoflavoned Drinking

Abstract

The research was conducted to find out the effect of Zn supplement to immune status of premenopausal women intervented with isoflavoned drinking. Respondents were 22 women, more than 40 year of age. They were divided into two groups, i.e. 11 women intervented with isoflavone, and other 11 women intervented with isoflavone and 8 mg Zn. The activities of SOD, catalase and GPX were determined by spectrophotometer, thymulin levels by ELISA, whereas Zn levels by AAS. Result showed that Zn had significantly increased SOD lymphocyte activities (p=0.002) and thymulin plasma (p=0.011). Zn had increased catalase (p=0.103) and GPX (p=0.322) as well, but Zn plasma had decreased (0.163). It was indicated that Zn had improved the immune status by increasing lymphocyte and thymus cells activities.

Abstract

Stress condition has beeb reported to decrease intracellular antioxidant-superoxide dismutase(SOD) in the liver and kidneyof rats. This study was conducted to evaluate the antioxidant activies of ginger oleoresin on the profile of superoxide dismutase(SOD) in the kidney of rats under stress condition. The stress condition was achieved by five days of fasting together with swimming for 5 min/day. Ginger oleoresin was orally administrated in a dose of 60 mg/KgBW/day for seven days. Drinking water was provided ad libitum to all groups. The treatment of ginger oleoresin significantly decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and increased SOD activity, as well as immunohistochemicall, increased the content of copper, zinc-SOD (Cu, Zn-SOD) in the kidney tissues compared to that of untreated group. The antioxidant content in ginger oleoresin such as shogaol, zingeron, and gingerol, etc. were shownto have activities in the kidney tissues of rats under stress condition that is increasunf the profile of SOD. Ginger oleoresin treatment in combination both before and after stress gave the best result. Key words : antioxidant, ginger oleoresin, kidney, stress, superoxide dismutase (SOD)

Abstract

The study was aimed to get data on kind of processing and acceptance level of local soybean products in rural and urban areas in Java Island. The study locations were South Jakarta (Province of DKI Jakarta); Serang and Tangerang (Province of Banten); Bekasi, Bogor and Bandung (Province of West Java); Purwokerto, Semarang and Solo (Province of Central Java); Yogyakarta (Province of D.I.Yogyakarta); Malang, Jember and Surabaya (Province of East Java). The study was a part of a grand study on processing, acceptance, and consumption pattern of local soybean products at various socio-economic level of households in Java Island in 2005.  The data were obtained by interviewing and observing 2080 households (consisted of 1280 households in urban and 800 households in rural areas) selected randomly. Soybean products that mostly found in the market and consumed by households of Indonesian people, particularly in Java Island, were tempe, tauco, soy-sauce, tofu, tofu-flower, soy-sprout, and oncom.  The mostly ways to process the soy products were stir-frying, deep-frying, toasting, boiling, and ‘bacem’.  Besides, there were also some soy products that consumed directly at a household level after factorized processing, namely as soy-sauce and soy-milk. The average time used to process the soy-products varied, depended on the way of processing and  number of the product processed.  Stir-frying, especially for tempe, tofu, and tauge, was a frequent way done by poor and rich households, both in urban and rural areas.  The products that mostly processed by frying in rural household was tempe, tofu and soybean, meanwhile in urban areas were only tempe and tofu.  The everage time used by urban households to fry the soy-products was shorter than time used by rural households. It was found that more than 90% of households in rural and urban areas stated “like” and “like very much” tempe, tofu, and soy-sauce.  However, the acceptance level of household on tauco, soy-milk, and soy-flower was still low, namely less than 50%. Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of extension on nutrition-health and other factors on the growth of pre-school children.  The design of this study was a quasi experiment. The subjects of this study were pre-school children aged 3-6 year old with  some specified criteria, such as having no story of severe malnutrition and low birth weight, having a complete parents, literacy ability of the mother, stated in a health condi­tion/undefect handicapped, and did not follow any programs of early-age children educa­tion. The subjects were divided into two groups, namely group of control and group of in­tervention. The primary data collected consisted of family’s characteristics, child’s charac­teristics, and children’s care and development environment. Generally, there was no signifi­cant difference between pre- and post-test of mother’s knowledge on nutrition-health, both of control and intervention groups; however, there was a slightly difference on child-care on nutrition-health for the two groups. There was a significant difference on mother’s knowl­edge on nutrition-health between pre- and post- extension on the both groups.  About 51.3% of child’s growth was determined by factors of family and children.  The factors which had a possitive significant influence were body lenght, and mother’s knowledge on nutrition-health.  Keywords : intervention, caring, cognitive, psychomotor, social, emotional.

Zakaria 2) 1) Jurusan Teknologi Pertanian, Fakultas Pertanian, UNSOED Purwokerto 2) Program Studi Ilmu Pangan, Fakultas Teknologi Pertanian, IPB-Bogor ABSTRACT     Antioxidant activity of various ginger extracts are different.  The aims of this work are to determine the antioxidant activity of ginger extracts on linoleic acid. The antioxidant activities were tested on  linoleic acid supplemented with water and dichloromethane extract of ginger.   The antioxidant  activity was tested by measuring malonaldehide absorbance.  Total phenol and iron content  of the extracts were analyzed by spectrometry.  This research showed that antioxidant activity of water and dichloromethane extract of ginger was stronger than a-tocopherol, and antioxidant activity of dichloromethane extract is stronger than water extract of ginger.  Antioxidant activity of ginger extracts, seems to be correlated with  the  total phenol and iron contents.   Key  words :  Antioxidant, linoleic acid, dichloromethane, malonaldehide, and extract of ginger.

ABSTRACT   The objectives of this research were to examine the efeects of feed containing soybean tofu and tempeh on lumbar bone density and mass of ovariectomized female rats. Twenty four 17 weeks-old Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to four group, i.e.: (1) non-ovariectomized rats fed casein based diet (NonOvx), (2) ovariectomized rats fed casein based diet (OvxC), (3) ovariectomized rats fed diet containing soybean tofu (OvxH), and (4) ovariectomized rats fed diet containing soybean tempeh (OvxT); in three block based on their body weight.  The result show that body weight gram of ovariectomized rats was greater than nonovariectomized.  Ovariectomy caused atrophy of the uterus, and resulted in higher serum calcium level.  The lower lumbar vertebrae density of ovariectomized rats was observed and the decrease was prevented by tofu.   Key words : Tofu, tempeh, bone loss,  and ovariectomy

Abstract

Corn silo business of Rido Manah Farmer Groups is one of 56 units of corn silo that was developed by the Department of Agriculture. This research aimed to (1) identify and analyze the feasibility of business development in corn silo of Rido Manah Farmer Groups, (2) identify the internal and external factors affecting business development in the corn silo of Rido Manah Farmer Groups, (3) determining the appropriate strategy of business development of corn silo at farmer group. Data collection method used was the primary and secondary data were conducted through literature search, documents and reports of related institutions. Analysis reveals that of average farm productivity of farmers obtained from Farmers Group was slightly higher (4.59 tons/ha) compared to non-member farmers group (4.29 tons/ha). Size of farm management efficiency could be viewed by using the coefficient of revenue and expense ratio (R/C). R/C Farmer Groups (1.82) as well as non members (1.71) was greater than one, this indicated whether or not affiliated with Farmer Groups, Corn farming remain efficient and profitable, because the reward obtained was still higher than the costs. Corn silo business of Rido Manah farmer groups had been well implemented. BEP was 1.646,38 tons/year; B/C ratio was 1.07; PBP was 2,78 years; NPV with Discount Factors (DF) 14% was Rp. 127.019.755,6 and IRR was 21%. Those values showed that the corn silo business managed by Rido Manah Farmer Group was feasible. Sensitivity analysis showed that investment in the business unit of corn silo was vulnerable to an increase and decrease in corn prices where the value of eligibility criteria was not feasible. The total value of internal strategic matrix 3.013,meaning that the business unit of Corn silo Rido Manah Gapoktan had this high internal factors and external strategic matrix in total of 3.019 showed the response given by the corn silo business of Rido Manah farmer groups to the external environment was high. The best strategic alternative analysis obtained 6 most effective strategic business performed by silo corn which link by (1) establishing partnerships, (2) increasing the role of managers, (3) developing of process of corn products, (4) active collaborating, (5) increasing the capacity of equipment and machinary, and (6) increasing production and productivity of corn farmers.   Key words: corn silo, farmer groups, feasibility, strategic business

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate acute toxicity of methanol extract of Sargassum echinocarpum on male and female of mice (Mus musculus) strain BALB/c two month age. S. echinocarpum was obtained from Talango Island in April 2008. The powder of S. echinocarpum was macerated by methanol (1:3) at 4 °C for 3 x 24 hours, then concentrated, dried, and extracted. The extract was screened to observe the phytochemical compounds. For acute toxicity extracts was given orally and once on one hour before feeding. The dose treatments were 0; 625; 1250; 2500; and 5000 mg/kg body weight (BW). Parameters measured were phytochemical contain, body weight during the study, 50 percent of lethal doses, and histology score of liver and kidney. The phytochemical study showed that methanol extract of S. echinocarpum contained tannins, polyphenols, saponins, glycosides, and steroids. On 1250 mg/kg BW or more, methanol extract of S. echinocarpum inhibited the increasing of body weight on mice, but, until 5000 mg/kg BW, it did not cause mortality on mice. On 1250 mg/kg BW or more, methanol extracts caused necrosis on hepatocyt and tubulus.Key words: acute toxicity, methanol extract, Sargassum echinocarpum

Abstract

SUPLEMENTASI STEROL LEMBAGA GANDUM (Triticum sp.) PADA MARGARIN (Supplementation of Margarine with Wheat Germ Sterol) Sri Anna Marliyati1)*, Hidayat Syarief1), Deddy Muchtadi2), Latifah K. Darusman3), dan Rimbawan1) 1) Departemen Gizi Masyarakat, FEMA IPB 2) Departemen Ilmu dan Teknologi Pangan, Fateta IPB 3) Departemen Kimia, F-MIPA IPB   Diterima  25 November 2009 / Disetujui 26 April  2010 ABSTRACT   Margarine is a water in oil (w/o) emulsion product which is widely used for household cooking and baking industry. Consuming of margarine, which contains trans fatty acid may cause health problem due to the increase of LDL cholesterol. Since margarine is also a good carrier of phytosterol which prevent the absorption of cholesterol, there is a possibility to formulate a healthier margarine. In this research formulation and characteristics of products was investigated. The research work consisted of two steps: (1) supplementation of wheat germ sterol into margarine (two methods) and  (2) analysis of physical, chemical characteristics and hedonic score. Parameters of physical characteristics were melting point and emulsion stability, whereas chemical characteristics were water and oil contents. The hedonic test was carried out based on product’s color, odor, taste, texture, and spreadability. Results showed that method II of supplementation produced better margarine than method I, in which the concentration of sterol in the margarine was higher with a melting point similar to that of control, better emulsion stability, and higher hedonic score. Supplementation process was carried out by mixing sterol into fat phase melted at 50 0C, followed by mixing with aqueous phase at 4 0C. Sterol used for method II was extracted using mixed solvent of hexane and ethanol at the ratio of 1:2 (v/v), which was resulted from previous experimentation.   Key words: supplementation, wheat germ sterol, margarine

Agatis Kampus IPB Darmaga Bogor 16680 Diterima 14 Januari  2009 / Disetujui  29 Desember 2009   ABSTRACT   The objectives of this experiment were to evaluate the effects of isoflavone-riched soybean flour with different treatment level of isoflavone on MDA level, SOD activity, and profile of Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase (Cu,Zn-SOD) spermatogenic cells in the seminiferous tubules of male rat testes. Diet was given as isonitrogen and isocaloric with 10% of dietary protein. Twenty five males of Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups and treated with isoflavone-riched soybean flour by oral administration with different concentrations. The treatment was done for 2 months. The optimum concentration of isoflavone was 1.5 mg/day and resulted in : decreased level of MDA testes (2.29±0.05 nmol/g), mantained high SOD activity of rat testes (729.4±23.73 U/g), and increased content of Cu,Zn-SOD by immunohistochemical technique on spermatocytes and early spermatids. It was concluded that isoflavone-riched soybean flour diet (1.5 mg/day isoflavone) can prevent the formation of lipid peroxide and improve the antioxidant status of rat testes.   Key  words :   isoflavone - riched   soybean    flour,   lipid  peroxide, SOD  activity, immunohistochemistry
