ULTRAFILTRATION AS PRETREATMENT OF REVERSE OSMOSIS: LOW FOULING ULTRAFILTRATION MEMBRANE PREPARED FROM POLYETHERSULFONE–AMPHIPHILIC BLOCK COPOLYMER BLEND

Abstract

This paper demonstrates the preparation of polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes via wet phase inversion method using either poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b- poly(ethylene oxide) (Pluronic®, Plu) or polyethylene glycol (PEG) as hydrophilic modifier. Their effects on membrane structure as well as the resulting membrane performance and their stability in membrane polymer matrix were systematically investigated. The investigated membrane characteristics include surface hydrophilicity (by contact angle), surface chemistry (by FTIR spectroscopy) and water flux measurement. Visualization of membrane surface and cross section morphology was also done by scanning electron microscopy. The membrane performance was examined by investigation of adsorptive fouling and ultrafiltration using solution of bovine serum albumin as the model system. The stability of additive was examined by incubating the membrane in water (40oC) for up to 10 days. The results show that modification effects on membrane characteristic and low fouling behavior were clearly observed. Further, amphiphilic Pluronic generally showed better performance than PEG.

Abstract

 ABSTRAKUsed oil is a waste which is difficult to degrade. Waste oil needs to be managed properly in order to avoid negative effects on the society and environment. Therefore a research should be conducted to study a utilization of waste oil using bioremediation method so that the waste oil could be recycled. In this bioremediation process, EPS (Extracellular Polymeric Substances) will be act as a biostimulant so that the waste oil could be emulsified and degraded. The EPS is created by extraction using heating and centrifugation methods, while the bioremediation experiment is held using batch system. The highest oil removal efficiency is equal to 70 %, which is attained with 450 mg of EPS DW additives for 300 ml of waste oil.

Abstract

ABSTRACTPT. Indofood CBP as one of the food industry that produces ingredients as its product does not miss from sludge treatment issues. The sludge inflicts troubles on the environment and PT. Indofood CBP, since there is no effective handling and processing. Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) as one of alternative sludge treatment. By varying volume of the sludge: 300 gr, 400 gr, and 450 gr, and mass of the EPS: 350 gr, 400 gr, and 450 gr DW, thus it could be indicated that the more EPS are given and the less amount of sludge volume then a greater degradation of sludge. Obtained data shows the reduction of COD is 65,16% in reactor 1, 69,15% in reactor 2, 81,78% in reactor 3, 53,19% in reactor 4, 57,85% in reactor 5, 65,82% in reactor 6, 44,55% in reactor 7, 45,88% in reactor 8, 47,21% in reactor 9, 36.57% in control reactor. And the reduction of BOD is 59,29% in reactor 1, 60,62% in reactor 2, 65,04% in reactor 3, 51,77% in reactor 4, 52,65% in reactor 5, 55,75% in reactor 6, 37,61% in reactor 7, 39,82% in reactor 8, 44.69% in reactor 9, 35,84% in control reactor.

Abstract

PM2,5  adalah salah satu polutan dari aktivitas memasak rumah tangga berbahan bakar kayu yang berpotensi besar menjadi penyebab masalah kesehatan di sejumlah negara berkembang di dunia (Huboyo, dkk, 2009). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh kelembaban kayu terhadap konsentrasi PM2,5 pada proses pembakaran. Penelitian dilakukan pada  skala laboratorium dengan menggunakan reaktor sederhana sebagai dapur  replikasi, dan skala lapangan di 10 rumah yang menggunakan bahan bakar kayu dalam aktivitas memasak. Dari hasil penelitian skala replikasi dihasilkan bahwa kelembaban kayu terhadap distribusi massa PM2,5 memiliki hubungan yang cukup, karena adanya kontrol udara sehingga partikel yang  dihasilkan dapat tertampung dengan baik. Sedangkan pada penelitian pada dapur rumah tangga menunjukkan tidak ada satu pun hubungan antara distribusi massa PM2,5 dengan 4 faktor yaitu lama memasak, penggunaan kayu, laju pembakaran dan kelembaban kayu, karena proses memasak setiap sampel berbeda. Dari hasil penelitian skala replikasi semakin tinggi kelembaban maka semakin tinggi konsentrasi PM2,5  yang dihasilkan, hal ini erat kaitannya dengan dilakukannya kontrol udara serta waktu pembakaran. Hasill penelitian pada dapur rumah tangga mengindikasikan  kelembaban kayu tidak mempengaruhi konsentrasi PM2,5 karena adanya pengaruh angin, tambahan bahan bakar yang digunakan serta faktor lainnya.

Abstract

Solid waste may become a potential resource if it could be managed properly. Organic waste could still be used as compost materials and inorganic waste could be recycled, sold, or reused. In the year 2012, solid waste generated by Tembalang Campus, Diponegoro University adds up to 836.23 kg with a volume of 20.23 m3/day. The amounts of waste generation are 360.67 kg with a volume of 11.18 m3/day  comes from academic activities; 140.89 kg with a volume of 4.036 m3/day comes from administrative activities; 119.7 kg with a volume of  0.21 m3/day  comes from Rusunawa trash; and 214.97 kg with a volume of 4.8 m3/day  comes from campus sweeping activities.In the optimization plan of solid waste management system, efforts will be done to homologize trash containers across the region. The container will be divided into four bins, which are organic waste bin, paper trash bin, plastic trash bin, and other waste bin. The entire region is endeavored to receive waste collection services in order to prevent waste burning activities. Collected organic waste will be processed into compost in the composting units and the inorganic will be processed in Undip’s ISWM (Integrated Solid Waste Management) Facility.

Abstract

Banger River is one of macro-drainage system with a total length of 6,256 kilometers and 524,46 Ha. During this time Banger received numerous exiles waste from 10 villages which it passes in sub-district Semarang East. Along with the rising numbers of inhabitants it is possible to load any pollution will be higher. This research was conducted to find out the current water quality assessment and pollution control efforts in the days come. Water quality assessment of Banger River done using methods of NSF-IKA, the results show Segment 1, 3 getting category are blackened, and Segment 2,4 are filthy nasty. Settlement activity is providing input to the highest organic pollution load of Banger River. SWOT analysis showed the weakness of internal factors and the number of threats from external factors in Banger River so that it needs endure strategy for controlling pollution that occurred while continuous trying to.

Abstract

Transportation, particularly motor vehicle is the largest single source of air pollution, which reached 60 – 70 % from total amount of pollution, while the industry sector contribute about 10 – 15 %, and the rest coming from other combustion sources (Soedomo, 2001). Motorcycles produces emissions CO, HC, NOx and CO2 that causing negative effects on human health and the surrounding environment. Yamaha Vixion is one of the sport bike type which equipped with engine capacity of 150 cc that currently famed among young people. In the market of sport type motorcycles, Yamaha Vixion led with highest sales reaching 23,432 units (Vivanews, 2011). Results of this study showed that an increase in emissions CO and HC are influenced by the mileage, service periode and engine life of the motorcycle. The older age of the machine and the greater the distance of the motorcycle, CO and HC emissions generated higher. The more routine of motorcycles serviced then CO and HC emissions produced would be smaller. Emissions NOx are influenced by the mileage and service periode. Emissions CO2 are not influenced by mileage, service period and engine life.

Abstract

Generally, leachate landfill contain a large number of hazardous compounds including heavy metals especially lead (Pb) and chromium (Cr) which can contaminate soil and groundwater around the landfill. Sanggrahan Landfill has implemented liner (base layer system) to prevent leachate leakage and migration of pollutants through landfill liners. This research describes the result of model transport Pb and Cr in leachate Sanggrahan Landfill using software Pollute v.7 for 12 years. Transport of contaminant which is observed in this model are the layer of gravel, geotextile, geomembrane, compacted soil and native soil of landfill. This transport simulation model resulted that concentration of Pb and Cr would be increasing from 1st to 12th year. Both of these contaminants are predicted to be worse and potentially contaminate groundwater around the landfill.

Abstract

CO, HC, NOx and CO2 are harmful substances that come from motor vehicle exhaust. Three wheel motorcycle is a commercial products developed by PT. Tossa Shakti Motor Division that designed to transport goods up to 500 kg. But in fact, the seller transposal frequently exceed the freight’s limit. Emission test were performed using an Exhaust Gas Analyzer at 40 sample vehicles with different categories in each of engine life and service period. The vehicle emissions are also measured when the vehicle is at idleand continued with the interview to the owner of the vehicle. The collected data were processed using Microsoft officeExcel 2010 and SPSS 16.Result of this research are the older vehicle age, the higher concentration of CO emissions , HC and NOx is generated, while the concentration of CO2 emissions decreased. However, for vehicles with regular maintenance, produce CO2 emissions getting increase, and concentrations of other exhaust emissions will decrease. The higher mileage,  the higher concentration of CO emissions produced. But HC emissions, NOX and CO2 are not influenced by mileage.

Abstract

Characteristics of leachate are influenced by the type of waste that goes to landfill. Leachate of TPA Ngronggo Salatiga containing heavy metal of iron (Fe) and nickel (Ni). Due to the toxicity of leachate, it is necessary to prevent the leakage with using liner system in order not to contaminate the soil arround landfill. To predict pollution that caused by contaminant transport of leachate, can be done modelling use Pollute v7. In this model, transport of leachate is influenced by process of difution, dispersion and sorption in soil. The result of prediction contaminant transport of leachate during the life time of landfill for 15 years, can be use to evaluate the liner system of landfill. So can minimize the pollution of leachate.
