Abstract

Writing is one of the English language skill that have to be learnedby the students, so that, it needs great attention not only from the teachers butalso from the students. In this case, the students are given a chance to usetheir creative and critical thinking to express their ideas and opinions. Thisresearch is a descriptive research. This research was intended to analyze theability of the second year students of SMAN 08 Siak in writing applicationletter for an advertisement. The writer asked the students to write letters ofapplication in business according to an advertisement from ‘Jakarta Post’.Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the students’ ability in writingapplication letter for an advertisement is in “good” level.Keywords: descriptive research, writing skill, application letter

Abstract

Reading is one of the skills that students should master in learning English. Toget the information from the English paragraph, the learners have to able to read theparagraph effectively and efficiently. Thisis a descriptive research. This research wasintended to analyze the ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Bangun Purba inidentifying main ideas of the paragraphs in reading texts. The writer collect the data bygiving the students multiple choices test which consists of 20 items with 20 different shortparagraphs. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the students’ ability inidentifying main ideas of the paragraphs in reading texts is in “good” level.Keywords : Descriptive Research, Reading Skill, Main Idea

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the second year students’ ability of SMA 2 Tambang in writing announcements. This research focuses on grammar, vocabulary, mechanic, form, and fluency based on writing announcements. The instrument used by the writer to collect the data for this study is writing test, that is writing announcements. Based on the research finding in SMA 2 Tambang, it can be found that, first, the ability of the students in writing announcements is in good level. Second, the students’ mean score in grammar is 63, vocabulary is 68, mechanic is 65, fluency is 56, and form is 54.The highest score obtained by the students for vocabulary that in at good level, and the lowest score that the students got is for form at in mediocre level.Keywords: Ability, Writing, Announcements.

Abstract

Abstract The problems of English teaching in Indonesia have been by many experts and practitioners in the field. Most people focus on the suitable methods of teaching. Some of the methods that have been used are grammar-translation method, direct method,, structural method, reading method, audio-lingual method, situational method, total physical response method, and communicative approach. As a result,Indonesian government or the department of education keeps on changing the methods of teaching English as a foreign language. It is true that we need to keep up with the progress in teaching methodologies. But there are many other factors that we need to consider when we want to be successful in our English teaching program. First of all, the teaching of English as a foreign language has always been considered very important in Indonesia in order to be able to compete with other countries in terms of science, commerce, and technologies. But in real practice the government does not seem to show seriousness in the matter. Let us look at the curriculum and syllabus. In a way, the content of the English syllabus is very dense. It covers all the language skills and components. But the result of the teaching learning process is still not satisfactory.Whenwe look at the teaching-learning process that has been done in public schools, we can probably say that the unsatisfactory result was caused by some factors. First of all, language teaching is different from other subjects teaching. Language teaching is not just a matter of teaching the knowledge. It is more of teaching the skills. It takes a long time to train someone to become fluent in using the language skills.In reality, the class size is usually big while the allotted time for English subject is very little and the meeting frequency is very low. A Foreign language must be taught intensively in small classes with high frequency of meetings. It is best if it is conducted on the daily basis so that the students can achieve quick results and progresses. When the students can feel the progress, they will be motivated to learn more.Keywords: English, language teaching, problems

Abstract

Vocabulary plays an important role in learning a foreignlanguage. It is an element that links the four language skills: speaking,listening, reading and writing. In order to communicate well in aforeign language, students need to have sufficient vocabulary. Afterthat, they need to understand the structure, function, etc. Toenrichtheirvocabulary.There are many useful approaches can be used. Oneof them is using games.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out whether there are significant effects of information gap technique on the speaking ability of the second year students of SMPN 1 Sungai Apit. This is a pre-experimental research conducted by using a pre-test – treatment – post-test design. This research used one group pre-test post-test design.The instrument used in this research was tests (pre-test and post-test). The population of this research was 113 of the Second Year Students of SMPN 1 Sungai Apit and the sample of this research was VIII 2 of SMPN 1 Sungai Apit which is total number of students of class was 20 students. Cluster random sampling method was used to select one class to be the sample. The data of this research were collected by giving the speaking tests (pretest-posttest) to the students. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The results of data analysis showed the mean score of pre-test was 52.47 and the mean score of post-test was 67.20.Based on the data analysis, It can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test because the t-test observed was higher than t-table. In other words, the alternative hypothesis of this researchwas accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. It also meant that teaching speaking by using information gap technique was effective to improve the students’ speaking ability. Keywords: Speaking Ability, Information Gap, Technique

Abstract

Abstract : The students have to learn the four language skills. They are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Reading plays an important role in learning. Reading is a communication process which requires a series of skills. Reading is actually a very complex process that requires a great deal of active participation on the part of the reader. The second year students of the senior high schools have learned some genres of reading texts From the researcher’s observation during her teaching practice, it was difficult for the students to comprehend English text. the researcher chose hortatory exposition as the text that is used for this research because they should learn hortatory exposition text. This research uses a quantitative method. The data for this research were obtained using an objective test. The result of the students scores in comprehending hortatory exposition texts can be described as follows : 6 students (13,95)  were in excellent level, 24 students (55,81) were in good level, 10 students (23,25) were in medicore level, 2 students (4,65) were in poor level and 1 student (2,32) was in very poor level. The mean score of the students’ ability in comprehending hortatory exposition texts is 67,44. It can be stated that the students ability in comprehending hortatory exposition texts was in good level. Considering that the students’ ability level in terms of comprehending hortatory exposition text is classified into good level, but the students should learn more because only few of them achieve the standard minimum criteria (75,00) of their school. Keyword: Reading, Comprehension, Text, Hortatory Exposition Text

Abstract

Abstract : This descriptive research aims to find out the ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Kampar Utara in comprehending news item texts. The population of this research was all of the second year students of SMAN 1 Kampar Utara in academic year 2017/2018. The number of sample was 22 students which were chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected using reading comprehension test in multiple choice type by giving 5 news item texts with 40 multiple choice items. The results of the data analysis showed that the mean of the students’ score in compreheneding news item texts is 74.00. It can be concluded that the ability of the second year students of SMAN 1 Kampar Utara in comprehending news item texts is good. Based on the result of the students’ scores in each of reading comprehension component, the lowest component of reading comprehension for the students was in finding inferences (62.73) and the highest one was in finding factual information in sources (81.82).Keywords: Study, Ability, News Item Text.

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental study is aimed at finding out if there is a significant effect of Know, Want to know, and Learned (KWL) teaching techniqueon the ability of the first year students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru in comprehending report texts. The design of the study is one group pre-test-treatment-posttest design. There are 12 classes in the first year. As many as 36 students of class X IPS 3 in the first semester of academic year 2018/2019 are chosen as the sample by using cluster random sampling technique due to the particular class presents various characters of the whole classes like; academic achievement, the students’ learning seriousness toward English and the size of the classroom. The instrument of the test is in the form of multiple choice which consist of 25 items about report texts. To collect the needed data the treatments were conducted for six times. The students’ scores were analyzed by using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) version 23.00 for windows. The results of the data analysis show that the mean score of the pre-test is 57.556 and the mean score of the post-test is 79.00. It means that the value of t-test is higher than t-table (11.055>1.95996) at 5% the significance level. Therefore, the alternative hyphotesis (H1) of this study is accepted. In other words, there is a significant effect of KWL teaching technique on the reading comprehensionability of the first year students of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru. The implication of this finding is be beneficial for the teachers in teaching and learning English especially in teaching reading.Keywords: Effect, KWL Teaching Technique, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Reading is one thenecessary skills that foreign languagelearners must achieve. Reading is not as simple as learning to spelland read sentences, but it is more complex than that. Readinginvolves the process of decoding, predicting, and many otherssimultaneously so that the reader can comprehend the text well.However, reading has become a ghost upon the students since itrequires the students to find some information within the text but thestudents are lazy to pay attention to it. Therefore, it is quitechallenging to teach reading. Good teaching has to apply a goodstrategy to encourage the students to be involved in the classactivities. One of the strategies is using semantic mapping. Accordingto Thomas, H. Estes (1999) Semantic Mapping is a strategy thatallows the students to organize their prior knowledge in these formalrelations, and thus provide themselves a basis for understanding whatthey are about to read and study. Semantic mapping provides agraphic structure of the knowledge that can be used to organize newideas as they are understood.
