Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate acute toxicity of methanol extract of Sargassum echinocarpum on male and female of mice (Mus musculus) strain BALB/c two month age. S. echinocarpum was obtained from Talango Island in April 2008. The powder of S. echinocarpum was macerated by methanol (1:3) at 4 °C for 3 x 24 hours, then concentrated, dried, and extracted. The extract was screened to observe the phytochemical compounds. For acute toxicity extracts was given orally and once on one hour before feeding. The dose treatments were 0; 625; 1250; 2500; and 5000 mg/kg body weight (BW). Parameters measured were phytochemical contain, body weight during the study, 50 percent of lethal doses, and histology score of liver and kidney. The phytochemical study showed that methanol extract of S. echinocarpum contained tannins, polyphenols, saponins, glycosides, and steroids. On 1250 mg/kg BW or more, methanol extract of S. echinocarpum inhibited the increasing of body weight on mice, but, until 5000 mg/kg BW, it did not cause mortality on mice. On 1250 mg/kg BW or more, methanol extracts caused necrosis on hepatocyt and tubulus.Key words: acute toxicity, methanol extract, Sargassum echinocarpum

Prevention of endothelial dysfunction in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats by Sargassum echinocarpum extract

Abstract

Aim This study aimed to elicit the protective effect of Sargassum echinocarpum extract on endothelial dysfunction in thoracic aorta of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.Methods The animals were divided into 5 groups. The first was normal, the second was diabetic non treated animals. The third to fifth groups were the diabetic animals which given Sargassum echinocarpum extract (150; 300, and 450 mg kg-1 body weight, respectively) by oral gavage and extract treatment was given for 12 weeks. Diabetes was induced by single administration of streptozotocin (45 mg kg-1, i.p.), dissolved in freshly prepared 0.1 M citrate buffer, pH 4.5. Diabetes was confirmed ten days latter in streptozotocin induced animals showing blood glucose levels > 200 mg dL-1 (11.1 mmol L-1) as monitored in the blood from tail vein using glucometer. After the treatment period, the blood serum acquired was used for antioxidant enzymes assays and the thoracic aorta was used for vasorelaxation assay.Results There was a significant decrease in the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) in diabetic rats (3.31 ± 0.12;67.17 ± 0.62;35.10 ± 0.83) comaped to control rats (9.97 ± 0.12;185.31 ± 0.23;116.38 ± 0.88). Administration of Sargassum extract increased the activity of SOD, CAT, and GSH-px. The diabetic rats exhibit endothelial dysfunction as shown by loss of vasodilatory response to acethylcholine (ACH). This was restored by administration of Sargassum extract.Conclusion Sargassum echinocarpum extract ameliorates oxidative stress and reverses the endothelial dysfunction associated with diabetes. Abstract

AbstrakIndeks aktivitas antioksidan dikembangkan guna standarisasi kekuatan aktivitas antioksidan baik dariekstrak maupun senyawa murni. Metode ini dikembangkan berdasar pereduksian radikal difenilpikrilhidrasil.Rumput laut cokelat diketahui mempunyai komponen aktif yang bersifat antioksidan. Tujuan penelitian iniadalah untuk menentukan indeks aktivitas antioksidan ekstrak Sargassum aquifolium. S. aquifolium didapatkandari perairan pantai pulau Talango, Kabupaten Sumenep. S. aquifolium dibersihkan, dicuci, dikeringkan,ditepungkan dan dimaserasi etanol, aseton 70%, metanol, etanol 80%, metanol 80%, dan air (1:3 b/v) tigakali pada suhu 4oC selama 24 jam. Fitrat digabungkan, dipekatkan, dan dikeringkan untuk mendapatkanekstrak. Ekstrak selanjutnya diuji kemampuannya dalam mereduksiradikal difenilpikrilhidrasil. Penurunanserapan radikaldifenil pikrilhidrasil diamati dengan spektrofotometer pada panjang gelombang 517 nm. Hasilmenunjukkan bahwa konsentrasi hambatan 50% ekstrak metanol S. aquifolium lebih kecil dibanding ekstraklainnya. Indeks aktivitas antioksidan ekstrak metanol S. aquifolium sebesar 0,54. Berdasar indeks aktivitasantioksidan maka ekstrak metanol S. aquifolium tergolong antioksidan sedang dan berpotensi dikembangkansebagai nutraseutikal beraktivitas antioksidan.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of each category of learning, motivation, and its interaction with mathematical reasoning ability. Form of quasi-experimental research is the 2 x 3 factorial design of this study population are student teachers in mathematics education courses STKIP PGRI Pontianak. Sampling was done by cluster random sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data is motivation questionnaire, and mathematical reasoning ability test conducted by first corresponding item analysis procedures. Based on the hypothesis testing using a two-way ANOVA different cells and further testing, research concluded that: mathematical reasoning ability of the student in the learning model of reciprocal teaching better than conventional learning, both in general and by category level of motivation; And mathematical reasoning abilities of students with high motivation better than mathematical reasoning abilities of students with low motivation, and mathematical reasoning skills of students with high motivation as well as being motivated, and the same thing also in the medium and low motivation, both in general and by category learning. Effects of brown algae extract to function of aorta endothelium cell in diabetic rats

Abstract

Macro and microvascular disease are currently the principal causes of morbidity and mortality in diabetes mellitus patients. Loss of the modulatory role of  the  endothelium  may  be  a  critical and  initiating factor  in  the  development of diabetic  vascular  disease.  Polyphenol is known behave protective active compound to function endothelium cell.  Polyphenol that contained in brown algae was phlorotannin.  The  aim  of  the  present  study  was  to  investigate  the effects  of  S.  echinocarpum extract  on  endothelial  dysfunction  in  aorta  of streptozotocin  diabetic  rats.  This experiment was conducted by complete randomized design in 2 months old of male albino Sprague Dawley strain of rats, 125-150 grams body weight. The rats divided in fivegroups, each group consist of  6  rats.  First  group:  normal  which  is  given  1  mL  of  extract  vehicle  orally; second  group:  diabetic  rats  which  is  given  1  mL  of  extract  vehicle  orally;  third group:  diabetic  rats  which  is  treated  extract  150  mg/kg  BW  dose  orally;  fourth group: diabetic rats which is treated extract 300 mg/kg BW dose orally; and fifth group: diabetic rats which is treated extract 450 mg/kg BW orally. Diabetic rats prepared by injection of 45 mg/kg  streptozotocin  intraperitoneally.  Extract was given to diabetic rats during 90 days.  The  result  showed  that  brown  algae extract  rearrange  endothelium  cell  function  of  diabetic  rats  by  increasing relaxation,  releasing  of  EDRF  and  decreasing  of  MDA.  Based on these observations,  it  was  concluded  that  S.  echinocarpum extract  recovers  the endothelial  dysfunction  associated  with  diabetes.  This effect appears to be  due to its antioxidant properties.Key words: diabetes, EDRF, endothelial dysfunction, MDA, S. Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh pembelajarankooperatif tipe Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) terhadap hasil belajar siswa pada materi operasi hitung bentuk aljabar Kelas VII SMP Negeri 1Kendawangan Kabupaten Ketapang, Metode penelitian adalah eksperimen, bentuk penelitian pre-eksperimen dan rancangan penelitian one group pretest postest design. Populasi penelitian ini semua siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 1 Kendawangan yang terdiri dari 5 kelas. Sampel yang digunakan adalah kelas VIIB. Teknik pengumpulan data pada penelitian ini adalah teknik pengukuran dengan alat pengumpul data berupa tes hasil belajar. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, dapat disimpulkan: (1) Hasil belajar siswa pada materi operasi hitung bentuk aljabar sebelum diterapkan model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) tergolong kurang; (2) Hasil belajar siswa pada materi operasi hitung bentuk aljabar setelah diterapkan model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) tergolong baik; (3) Terdapat pengaruh penerapan model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) terhadap hasil belajar siswa pada materi operasi hitung bentuk aljabar kelas VII SMP Negeri 1 Kendawangan Kabupaten Ketapang.Kata Kunci: STAD, Hasil Belajar

XML Compression System on Smartcard Case Study of Medical Record Data

Abstract

In the medical service at the practice site as well as in the standard hospital, the physician keeps a record of the patient's information in a file known as the medical record. The drawback to this file is the availability of unreliable data. Where a patient's medical record should be searched one by one in a particular file. In this research, we will create a medical record application system with XML compression feature with tag method (firstchild,sibling)* data combined with Bzip2 method on ACOS smartcard storage media. The results obtained are, the ratio of file size written on smartcard media is smaller than the files that are not compressed. The average ratio ranges from 14.04% with sampling data from 500 - 31000 bytes. Average reading time is 5.71 seconds, and the writing process is about 11.69 seconds.

Abstract

AbstractJabon area, Sidoarjo district is one of shoreline area that it have about 40 percentage of this is ponds. These used farming of agarophyte seaweeds, i.e. alga producing agar-agar, such as Gracilaria sp. Postharvest activity of this by farmer comprise of plucking, bringing, drying, and packaging produce quality of dry seaweeds lower than Indonesia National Standard and cause cheap price. The purpose of this study was to obtain increasing quality of dry agarophyte seaweeds by drum type of washing machine. The method of this activity was Participatory Rural Appraisal involving enlightenment, demonstration, and partnership in using of drum washing machine to group of farmer and seaweed cultivator on Tegalsari village, Jabon area, Sidoarjo district. The result showed that partner followed enthusiastically the enlightenment, demonstration, and partnership. The quality of dry seaweeds that washed by drum machine was rise and included in product criteria of Indonesia National Standard. The yield of dry seaweeds increased to 17.5% and the gel strength of agar-agar was higher six times and also the selling price expanded to 42% or Rp 2,500.- each kilograms. The conclusion is using drum washing machine able to increase the quality and selling price of dry seaweeds and move the increasing of prosperity of seaweed farmer and dry seaweeds cultivators.Keywords: drum washing machine, Gracilariasp, postharvest, quality, selling price. 

Optimasi Tanah Napa Sebagai Adsorben ion Cu(II)

Abstract

Has been done numerous studies to reduce levels of heavy metals in sewage waste products and many methods have been developed. Adsorption method with the right choice of adsorbent is a simple but quite effective method in removing heavy metals from wastewater. Napa soil contains high amount of silica and alumina which is 63.20% and 16.55%, the amount of silica and alumina in the soil napa almost the same with natural zeolite, so it can be used as an adsorbent. In this research, study has been conducted with the aim of determining the optimum condition of Copper(II) ion adsorption with Continuous system by napa soil adsorbent obtained from Aripan, Solok. In this research, was studied the effect of various parameters that affect the absorption capacity of the napa soil to adsorp Cu (II) ion, which is the pH of the solution, the initial concentration of the solution, the temperature of heating the adsorbent, adsorbent particle size, and the eluent flow rate. These results indicate that the optimum pH is 4, optimum initial concentration of the solution is 200 ppm, while optimum adsorbent heating temperature and optimum adsorbent particle size is 125°C  and 1700 mm respectively, and the optimum flow rate is 20 drops / min. Research data obtained was in accordance with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm curve when plotted C / m as a function of C then was obtained a linear curve which means adsorption of Cu (II) ion by Napa soil takes place chemically, adsorption affinity constant and maximum adsorption capacity was determined by using Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation which is 2.483 and 0.169 mg / g respectively.
